Rittenberg Roundup: Central Michigan follows up two-game slide with two straight wins

    Adam Rittenberg, ESPN Senior Writer
    October 12, 2013
    -------------------------------------------
Mount Pleasant, MI - The Chippewas were able to easily take care of Georgia State, making them now 4-2. After a two-game losing streak, Chambers have led the Chippewas to a two-game winning streak, as Central Michigan defeated Georgia State, 50-20.

Georgia State was able to take the lead with a field goal off the first drive, but Central Michigan was able to come back and take the lead with a touchdown run by Marcus Jackson, at 7-3. The Panthers came back down and scored a touchdown by way of a connection between Corey Williams and Jerrell Taylor, taking back the lead, 10-7.

James Mitchell started off the next drive with a huge run down the center of the field. A gash was left wide open by the Georgia State defense. After the play by Mitchell, Jackson started going through the air, passing to tight end Julius Peterson a few times before throwing to him for another touchdown score. In the last two minutes, the Panthers and the Chips exchanged touchdown scores, with Jerrell Taylor scoring for the Panthers and Garrett Ward scoring for the Chippewas. At the half, the Chippewas were leading 21-17.

After Jackson threw an interception on the opening drive of the second half, the Panthers got stopped by Justin Crum of the Central Michigan defense on third down. The Panthers got a field goal on that drive. After that drive, it was all Chippewa.

Jackson threw three more touchdowns, all to Julius Peterson, and Mitchell ran one in for the score. On the final touchdown of the game, backup quarterback, Xavier Deloach, scored a two-point conversion for the Chips. The Chippewas, led by J.D. Reed, stopped the Panthers the entire second half, other than their initial drive in the third. The final score between the Tier 8 foes was 50-20.

With 4 touchdowns on the day, Julius Peterson breaks the Central Michigan record for most receiving touchdowns in a game.

Although leader on offense, James Mitchell, had a solid game against Georgia State last week, gaining 103 yards, over three-quarters of that came in the garbage time, when the Chips were leading by more than 14 points. Chambers is looking to get Mitchell going, and getting him going early.

On the opposite side of the ball, starter halfback for the RedHawks, Dominic Brown, is currently probably with an ACL sprain. The Chippewa defense must be letting out a sigh of relief, as they've had trouble stopping the run the past couple weeks.

        Projected Score
        Miami University, 34-21

Although Central Michigan is on a roll at the moment, they'll give it up this week against the RedHawks. Even with the run game pretty much gone for Miami (OH), there is definitely the smell of overconfidence coming from the Chippewa locker room and, if they don't take their success with a grain of salt, they most likely won't play right and lose to the RedHawks, rain and all.

          Update

Hey guys, so, as you can probably tell by my spam this past afternoon, I’m going to try my best to get as much as there are possible while I’m off on winter break. When I get back to school, I’ll probably play 1-2 games a week, so we’ll try to get through a season in 7-8 weeks (that’s actually a lot, now that I type it out). I’m going to try to play the game against Miami (OH), Around the League - Week 8 and another article out by the end of the night (I’m EST, so probs around 12:30ish EST). Don’t count on that, as I’m out right now and I’m not sure when I’ll come back. Just wanted to give you guys this information, hope you enjoyed the game against Georgia State!

            Update 2

Alright, as you can probably tell, this time by my lack of posting today, I haven't had the time that I thought I would get out the content that I wanted to. First off, I got up later than I thought I would and I had to leave at around noon, so I didn't get to get any work done. Even though I finished the game last night, I couldn't get anything out and, currently, I am elsewhere, and won't be able to get to my house until tomorrow morning. However, I won't have enough time to get out the box score for the game against the RedHawks (spoiler... it went to OT (again...) and it was a barnburner (again...)) until tomorrow after lunch time. So that'll be a while from now. I'll probably only be able to get the box score out, but I'll try to get the Around the League out, too. Thanks for sticking with me and, hopefully, by Sunday, I'll be able to get a lot done. I want to be able to get the season wrapped up for New Years, but I have no idea what my parents have planned up to the point. I'll keep you posted as we get closer.

Take your time man. I’m not having the same amount time as I thought I would have either. I haven’t even played my first week game yet and was hoping to have it played tonight at the latest and tomorrow morning update posted. I’m hoping by New Years I can have season one close to being done. Who knows though, these holidays really can throw your schedule out of wack lol.

Rittenberg Roundup: Chips accomplish 21-point comeback, even with turnover difficulties

                Adam Rittenberg, ESPN Senior Writer
                October 19, 2013
                -------------------------------------------
Oxford, OH - In the third overtime game of the season, Chambers led the Chippewas to an absolute classic, making it the fourth this year. At the end of the first quarter, Central Michigan was losing to the RedHawks by a score of 21-0, after giving up a fumble and two interceptions, one of which went for a touchdown. All turnovers were given up by quarterback, Marcus Jackson, who turned the ball over for a whopping five times. Even with these miscues, the Chippewas were able to come from behind and defeat Miami University, 50-49, in overtime.

During the coin toss, the Chippewas deferred until the second half, giving the RedHawks the ball to start. After a three-and-out forced by the Chippewa defense, John Guillory came out to punt. Jackson led Central Michigan down the field before miscommunication between him and Julius Peterson led to the first interception of the game, caught by Bobby Garcia. After this silly turnover, the RedHawks, led by Tyler Roth, were able to score on a 30-yard pass from Roth to Andrew Brown. Then, after another solid drive by the Chips, Jackson fumbled the ball on a read option play, accounting for his second turnover on the day. Miami capitalized again, this time on a 6-yard pass from Roth to Ronnie Davis. On the very next drive by the Chippewas, the RedHawks scored a defensive touchdown by Jerrell Patton after he caught an interception from Jackson.

In the second quarter, the Chippewas brought a drive to a close with another result other than a turnover. They scored a touchdown with a connection between Jarvis Dowdell and Jackson. Chambers put Tim Webb out onto the field to kick an extra point, but Xavier Deloach ended up taking the ball and throwing to a wide open Omar Cox. The score was 21-8 after this score.

After allowing another touchdown, the Chippewas were able to score twice more, even with many chances to possibly score four times in addition to the first score of the second quarter. Each time, the Chips went for two, to make a step to get closer to the RedHawks. Into the half, Miami (OH) led Central Michigan, 28-24 by score, and 5-1 by turnovers.

In the second half, the Chips started off with the ball, but, after a drive that took them into the red zone, Central Michigan turned it over on downs after going for a touchdown on 4th-and-goal, on the third-yard line. Cox dropped the pass from backup Deloach, that would've made the score 30-28, pending the extra point. However, the RedHawks got the ball back and drove the field, leading ultimately to a Nathan Johnson receiving touchdown, thrown by Roth. The Central Michigan Chippewas drove the field, once more, and scored a field goal with roughly two minutes to go in the third. The score at the end of the third was 35-27 in favor of the RedHawks.

To start the fourth, Jackson from Central Michigan hit a long bomb to Jermaine Harris, which scored the Chips another touchdown. Like the previous scores, Central Michigan scored two additional points after a throw from Deloach to Cox was complete. However, with a tie, the RedHawks came back down the field, as the Chippewa defense allowed a running score from Roth. As the Chippewas were driving once more, Chambers drew up a fake punt pass for Roderick Williams to complete. However, the RedHawks were able to make a stop and get the ball back with roughly two minutes to go. However, Roth threw a pick to the Chippewa defense, which gave Central Michigan once last chance. They drove down the field and Derek Miller punched in a one-yard rushing score to be within a point of the RedHawks. However, instead of going for two, Chambers simply let Tim Webb kick his first PAT of the game. At the end of regulation, the two drew, at 42 apiece.

In overtime, the Chips deferred to start off on defense. After allowing a touchdown to Miami University, Central Michigan scored a touchdown on the first play of overtime. This time, like most other times, Chambers had Deloach throw to Cox off a fake field goal. To end the game, Cox caught the ball for two points, to give the fifth win of the season to Central Michigan, 50-49.

For the fourth time under Chambers, the Chippewas played in an absolute barnburner, that was categorized as an Instant Classic. Additionally, even though Jackson gave the ball up a whopping five times, he beat the all-time passing record for the Chips by over 80 yards, which ultimately led the Chippewas to a huge comeback victory. Furthermore, there was three receiviers for the Chips with 100 yards or more, and two more with more than 75. However, some news you can place in the 'bad' category, James Mitchell went out with an abdominal tear that will put him out for nine weeks, which means he will most likely be out for the rest of the year.

(I did not make this injury, this was the game, so I have no control over it whatsoever.)

                  Update

Alright, currently, I'm redoing the box score HTML, which, hopefully, will come out shortly so I can work on the Around the League. That should get out by the end of the night and I'm gonna start working on the Around the League. No promises of when that should be out, but if I don't get it out tonight, I think I'll have to get it out on Monday because I'm going to the Giants game tomorrow, which is an all-day extravaganza.

Thank you, Peterson, for giving me that info of installing the game, I had never thought about that before, and now it has worked without fail. *quickly knocks on wood* Other than that, I don't think I have much else to say other than I appreciate you all bearing with me while I try to figure out the best times to get this all out.

Yes, thank you! All day, it was working, so I figured I may as well go for it again. Honestly, I have no idea how it worked, because it was raining all day and there were balls that could've easily been caught throughout the day that weren't. Luckily, we got out of the game and with a win at that.

Mount Pleasant, MI - After defeating the Miami RedHawks in a nailbiter in Oxford, Ohio and after the Chippewas came back home to Mount Pleasant, Chambers has confirmed that James Mitchell, the leader on offense, will be out for the rest of the year with a torn abdominal.

This year, Mitchell has been the leading rusher for the Chippewas, with 578 yards on the ground. In addition, Mitchell was elected captain of the Chips this year on offense, for his amazing work on- and off-the-field. Currently, Mitchell has a 4.1 GPA at university as he makes his way to a Geology degree.

Mitchell declined to comment when asked to.

With James Mitchell out for the rest of the season, the Chippewas really need Marquis Harris to step it up on the ground game. The ground game for the Chippewas has been disgraceful recently, and they really need to pick it up, like they had in the beginning of the year. A win against the Chips could really boost the Wildcats and give them some much needed momentum for the rest of the Tier 1 season.

                                Projected Score
                                Kentucky, 38-35

Although Central Michigan has proven they can truly stick with the big boys, the Chips are gonna lose this one late, like they did against Michigan State. This game should be a good one, but, ultimately, Central Michigan will fall just short.
