Rittenberg Roundup: Chips defeat 'Cats off record-breaking throw

    Adam Rittenberg, ESPN Senior Writer
    October 26, 2013
    -------------------------------------------
Lexington, KY - Central Michigan defeated Kentucky, which extends their three-game winning streak to four. In the old format, the Chips would now be bowl eligible with six wins. However, the only shot the Chips have at playing in a bowl game is playing in a playoff, which is now confirmed, after gaining an additional three points, on top of the four already gained. With seven points in the table, there is no way any team in Tier 8 will be able to catch the Chippewas, so they have successfully clinched the first promotion playoff in the history of Central Michigan. In addition, they become the first official team to clinch a spot in a playoff in the history of this system, after they defeated the Wildcats, 31-24.

On the first drive, the Chippewas got some yardage up the field but were ultimately forced to punt the ball to the Wildcats. The Wildcats, led by Justin Yancey, scored a 38-yard score on their first drive, which was caught by Chris Morton for the score. The safeties for Central Michigan, Aaron Sharpe and Jason Miller, could be blamed for this score, as both missed tackles on Morton, which, obviously, led to the score. Additionally, Morton was Sharpe's responsibility on coverage.

Nonetheless, Kentucky scored the first points of the game, taking the lead, 7-0. However, the Chips came back on drove the field, taking roughly four minutes to finally end with a Willie Lee rushing score. Lee is a senior for the Chips and, with this said, has had less than 10 touches on the ball all year walking into the game. Although the fourth-string heading into the year, with Brandon Cox out with a suspension, and James Mitchell out with injury, Lee could very well be getting more touches on the ball as, now, the backup halfback of the Chips. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied, 7-7.

To start the second quarter, J.D. Reed caught an interception to get the ball back to the Chippewas. However, Marcus Jackson and his offense weren't able to get much going on offense and had to punt. The defense then shut down the Kentucky offense, to regain possession in the second quarter. Then, with the Chippewas driving, the Wildcats were able to stop them and force a decision by Chambers on fourth down. Chambers and Wade elected to go for it on fourth, and this ended up giving them a touchdown, after a corner strike to Joe Brown went the distance. The Chips led 14-7 at this point.

After regaining the lead, Central Michigan gave up a huge drive, that got capped off by a rushing touchdown from Michael Greco that tied up the game at 14. With just over a minute to go, Jackson and his offensive crew tried to drive down the field. However, a fumble by the Chippewas was overturned, Jackson threw an interception that gave the Wildcats the ball again. The defense came up big and sacked Yancey twice. Using all three of the remaining timeouts, the Chippewas had one last chance after a punt by the Wildcats. On the first play, with 8 seconds to go, Jackson threw an absolute bomb to Jarvis Dowdell, which brought the Chippewas within field goal range. Jackson spiked the ball with 3 seconds to go, and Tim Webb booted a 40-yard field goal, to give Central Michigan the lead, heading into the half, 17-14.

After giving up a first down on fourth down, the Chippewas allowed the Wildcats to score on the first drive of the third quarter. Looking to regain the lead, Jackson forced the ball, that was headed to Julius Peterson and gave up an interception. However, the defense came up big and stopped Kentucky. On the very first play of the drive, Marquis Harris fumbled the football. However, after further review, the Chippewas were able to retain possession after it was found Harris was down before the ball came out. They drove all the way into the red zone and, with a 4th-and-1 situation, turned the ball over as the fourth quarter was beginning.

With the Wildcats in their own 10-yard line, Defensive Coordinator for the Chippewas, Edgar Miller, sent a blitz that was extremely successful. So successful, in fact, that they were able to score after Justin Crum forced a fumble that was recovered by James Wilcox. The score gave the Chippewas the lead, 24-21, with five minutes left in the game. The very next drive, the Chippewa defense came up big once more, holding the Kentucky offense to a field goal, which tied the game up.

After exchanging punts, the Chippewas were set to punt once more. However, Roderick Williams attempted to throw a ball, but ended up giving it to the Kentucky defense anyways. With wonderful field position, Yancey attempted a long ball down the sidelines, that gave Miller an interception catch on the day. On the very next play, Jackson threw a ball to Garrett Ward on a corner strike play. In double-coverage, somehow, Ward was able to make the catch and ended up taking it to the house for an 85-yard pass with just 40 seconds to go in the game. With the touchdown pass, Jackson broke the program's record for most passing touchdowns in a season, with 28 and counting. Even with a valiant drive, the Kentucky Wildcats came up just short after Richard Lemon ended the game with a sack, at a final score of 31-24.

    -------------------------------------------
    Update

After this game and a 6-2 record, I have realized that I need to take action and adjust the sliders. Typically, I'd be fine with this type of record, but I really want to make this a rebuilding dynasty. That being said, I have officially clinched a spot in the game that can give me promotion to Tier 7. I am wondering if I should penalize myself, for some odd reason (like an article on the situation and the NCAA announces Central Michigan is not eligible for promotion this year) and prevent myself from being able to be eligible to gain promotion. I'll think it over, so nothing's set in stone, but that's where my head is at the moment. Let me know what you think.

Now, to get back on track. What I was saying was that I have decided to use J-Kits' sliders for the actual game, in addition to the penalty sliders (I may have to adjust those, too, because I haven't been getting the results that I wanted). After I finish the Around the League for both Week 9 and 10, I will adjust those sliders. We'll see how that pans out and if I need to adjust them. Other than that, that's about it. I plan to be getting out the Around the Leagues tonight and probably the Preview for the game against Western Michigan. If there's anything you have questions on, ask and I'll try my best to answer them. Thanks!

Florida State, Kansas State and Alabama are notable teams who lost this week and dropped some places. Some, such as Alabama and Florida State, fell down in the rankings quite far, while others, such as Kansas State and South Carolina, didn't fall too far down the polls. Nebraska, Missouri and Washington all stayed in their rankings, at first, second and third, respectively. Oregon, who was ranked first in the nation at one point, lost to UCLA this week. The Ducks have fallen completely out of the rankings and, since conference play has started, is looking relegation straight in the face. They have lost all four games in the Pac-12 and their season isn't looking too well at the moment.

With 3 points, Kent State is the only team that has a chance to overcome the point total of the Chippewas. However, with only one more game that isn't against an FCS team and that team being a Tier 8 team, there is no possible chance that Kent State can beat Central Michigan in Tier 8, even if Central Michigan loses out.

Central Michigan has a bye week before they play Western Michigan in Kalamazoo.

Good win against Kentucky! I love the idea of the relegation dynasties and I see they have become very popular on the boards in the past few years. I still don't entirely understand how everything works but from what I've seen in yours (still have to go through everything) it looks like an awesome idea.

As for the promotion/skill level/penalties, I love challenging/limiting myself so I'd say go for it!

Re: Coach Chambers' Journey to the Top: The Catastrophic Chippewas | A Relegation Dyn

I suggest using the community sliders, that’s what I’ve been using in my dynasties and I’m getting good games out of them. But honestly, the biggest thing is to not use the coaching skill trees. The game plays so much better when you don’t use the skill trees, they give you an advantage over the cpu. I would be careful with penalizing yourself so early in the dynasty because it might kill your mojo. Just play out the rest of this season and reset your skill trees in the offseason, you’ll see a jump in difficulty

I agree here. To chime in a little, I’m going back to Community Slider set with my own tweaks, fatigue off and no use of the skill tree (except Recruiting tree) I was using J-Kits and his slider set doesn’t seem to do to well with Fatigue off. Came across some issues In game that a Slower HB with 84 speed out ran my 92 speed Cornerback and 96 speed Safety. Not sure what caused it, but my guess was the Running Ability at 90. Community slider set with no coach trees except recruiting and fatigue off for me, has been excellent.

Definitely don’t penalize yourself so early man, it will probably end up killing the dynasty for you. I mean if you really want to, go ahead. Just take it as luck! Maybe next season you’ll have a down year and you’ll get demoted back down. Either way, your call man. I am still following!

Kalamazoo, MI - Central Michigan looks to get to seven wins on the season with the game against Western Michigan today. They also look to grab their first Michigan MAC Trophy since 2010, while Western Michigan would obtain just their second since the creation of the trophy, after winning said trophy in 2005. In addition, both teams are fighting to win the Victory Cannon, the trophy for the winner between the two teams. Western Michigan looks to continue their streak in this game and extend it to three straight years.

Chambers looks to go undefeated with the rivals this year, after he and the Chippewas defeated Eastern Michigan. With the hot streak they're on, Central Michigan should easily take care of Western Michigan. After all, the Broncos are 2-7.

                Projected Score
                Central Michigan, 35-17

Western Michigan is having a pretty terrible season, including losing to a Michigan State team that beat Central Michigan, too, but in a much closer game. They beat a Memphis team that is on the brink of relegation and a Ball State team that is currently 4-3.

Central Michigan is looking to finish their season in style, with huge win against Western Michigan and other teams to finish off the season, such as Vanderbilt and UMass. After James Mitchell went down with a torn pectoral, the Chips defeated Kentucky with a heavily pass-minded offense, that allowed quarterback Marcus Jackson to break the program's record for most passing touchdowns in a season. The Chippewas should handle a team that's had as rough a season as the Broncos have had.

Thank you guys so much for your advice! I do think that adjusting my skill trees could definitely help, but I think keeping my recruiting tree as full as possible will be huge, as I have limited myself to not adjusting that part of the game at all.

Thanks again, Peterson, for keeping up since Day One, it's been a real pleasure!

Regarding the sliders, however, I have no idea where I'm gonna go with those. Initially, I liked J-Kit's sliders (I forget who suggested them), but, after I literally just looked at the Community Sliders, I think I might be leaning towards them. I'm done for the night and I haven't adjusted them yet, so I think I'm gonna sleep on it and make my decision in the morning. Either one I choose, I do think I'll have to equal FG Accuracy for myself because, although it hasn't shown yet, I cannot kick for my life. It's gonna bad at some points. That's why I've leaned towards going for two or going for it on fourth because there's really no point.

Also, with my penalization, you guys make a good point in that, if I do get promoted and I have a crappy year next year, I could very well be back in Tier 8, so it may balance itself out. May as well get a taste of Tier 7 lol

Anywho, I appreciate all of your suggestions and I think all of it will help me make my decision. Thank you all for keeping up with me and, hopefully (fingers crossed), I'll be able to get to it tomorrow and get some games done before Christmas.

                    Update

After some sleep, I have decided to go with the Community Sliders, so I'll be plugging them in and getting the Western Michigan game out as soon as possible. I'm gonna try to play the game right now, and I'll most likely have to get the box score out later in the day.

EDIT: Alright, done with the game, just have to fill in the Generator and we'll be good to go. Won't get a chance to do that this morning, I'll have to wait until probably after 7, at the earliest. I'll keep you guys updated. If I don't get anything out the rest of the day or tomorrow, Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate! Happy Holidays for those who don't!

Rittenberg Roundup: Western Michigan can't keep up with Central Michigan

                        Adam Rittenberg, ESPN Senior Writer
                        November 9, 2013
                        -------------------------------------------
Kalamazoo, MI - The Chippewas have now won each of the last five games. Whether home or away, Central Michigan has gotten it down and the Chips are hot now, after defeating their rival, Western Michigan. In addition to continuing their win streak, the Chippewas have now earned their first Michigan MAC Trophy and their first Victory Cannon under head coach Andrew Chambers, who joined the Chips this past spring. Central Michigan defeated the Broncos, quite soundly, 31-10.

To start the Broncos had the ball, and the Chips were able to force a punt from Jeffrey Alexander in four plays. Pat Woods wasn't really able to get anything going and Greg Underwood was missing his receivers right and left. After Joe Brown received the punt and took it up a couple yards, the Chippewas were able to get right to business. However, their business went just as poorly as the Broncos' had, so Roderick Williams came out to punt. Although Marquis Harris was able to get a couple yards and a first down, when the Chips went to the air, Marcus Jackson faced similar problems to Underwood and he wasn't able to complete a single pass. It also didn't help to get sacked on third down.

After exchanging punts, the Chips were able to come down with an interception, after Aaron Sharpe jumped a route by Mark Davis. In their own territory, the Chips were forced to settle for a field goal, even with a solid drive. Jackson was able to complete his first pass for a single yard that went to Harris. At the end of the drive, he was 1-for-6, with a single yard to his name. Tim Webb came out and booted a 33-yard field goal, with the help from Xavier Deloach with the hold.

With the Chippewas leading 3-0, the Broncos marched down the field and allowed Jeff Williams to kick a bomb through the uprights, to even the game at a field goal. The cracker of a kick was a whopping 51-yards and it gave the team some momentum. However, not for long. The Chippewas drove down the field and ended with a 21-yard dart to a streaking Jermaine Harris, who caught the ball for a touchdown. At the half, Central Michigan was leading Western Michigan, 10-3, and the Chippewas would get the ball to start the second half.

To start the second half, Central Michigan took a good chunk of the second half to get to the end zone. The team took nearly the entire play clock nearly every play, until Marquis Harris scored on a passing play, with a wonderful, accurate throw from Jackson. They upped the score from 10-3 to 17-3 and became fully in the driver's seat with two minutes left in the quarter. The Chippewa defense, spearheaded by Cedric Mann and Richard Lemon, came up with another stop and gave possession to the offense.

The offense took their time once more, getting to the red zone with four minutes to go in the game. The entire drive lasted roughly four minutes of playing time, capped off with a Willie Lee passing touchdown with just under four minutes to go. The Broncos tried to, and succeeded in, quickly scoring a touchdown to get back in the game. Alas, the mountain of points the Chippewas had put on the board was too much, and the Omar Cox touchdown in the winding minutes of the game sealed the deal. The final score of the game was 31-10.

The win against Western Michigan allows the Chippewas to take home the Michigan MAC Trophy, regardless of the outcome between the Eagles and the Broncos that was 38-17, in favor of the Eagles. In addition, Chambers and the Chips take home their very first Victory Cannon and, according to Chambers, these two trophies should stay with the Chips for quite some time.

Yeah, the Community Slider worked really well, I mean really well. Also, the penalty part of the game really started to show after the slider change, so I think it's kind of something that you need both penalty and gameplay sliders adjusted to really see some changes in the game. However, most of the penalties for me were delay of game penalties because I had to leave but didn't pause it (even though I know for sure I paused it) lol

Great to be able to play to make it to the next tier. I think it's still undecided in Tier 7 who is eligible for relegation, but, at the moment, it's looking like I'll have to play Memphis. Even in addition to the pro-rel playoff I clinched, I might be able to play in the Taco Bell Bottom Championship, which would be crazy. If we win out, we should definitely be in it. If we lose to just Notre Dame, and no one more, we could have a chance, too. It all depends on the votes.

Speaking of which, I was thinking about it, and I wanted to make you guys involved in the process so, when comes time, I'm gonna be having some Google Forms to help me make the fields for all of the tiered playoffs and the national championship. I'll let you guys know when I need your help, but I think it'd be really helpful to me and, like I said, I want to involve you guys.

I'm gonna try to get the Week 11 Around the League out later tonight (maybe within the next couple hours - don't quote me), but I got an Xbox One for Christmas, so, at the moment, my dad and I are playing FIFA with each other. Wouldn't seem right to play on my 360 when my parents got me an Xbox One. Again, Merry Christmas everybody! Hope you all have a great rest of your day!

                                Hello all!

So, for Christmas, in addition to the Xbox I got, I got a tripod and I wanted to make some videos. Although the quality is crappy as heck, I still wanted to allow you guys to be able to watch and see how it's going. As I can stream FIFA on my Xbox with Mixer, I have decided to use that as my platform for streaming. So, again, although crappy as heck, I'm using my iPhone with the tripod (which is literally on a chair) to stream it.

The link for my stream is here.

I plan on starting it for Season 2, but if you want me to stream the rest of Season 1, I'd be happy to comply. I actually have it running at the moment, just to test it out. So if you want to see some Tier 5 play (Troy vs Northern Illinois), go ahead and check it out.

It is and will be on mute for the foreseeable future. I play in my basement and the audio quality is even worse (I know, right? How is that possible?) than the video quality. Also, my family does... things... in my house, so unless you want to hear my family walking around and watching Infinity War, then I won't be able to commentate, other than typing in the chat. I want to make this a thing, so I'll see how this does.

As always, thanks guys and have a Merry Christmas!
