MLB The Show Over the Years

A similar thread was made a few years ago and I thought it would be interested if we took a look at how the Show has progressed over the years. For those interested, really pay attention, it's troubling to see the lack of progression in certain areas, especially considering the original version 12 years ago was on the PS2. Some could argue that gameplay has actually regressed and that it looks MORE realistic in previous iterations:

    MLB The Show 09 PS3

I don't think it's hardware limitations or lack of team size anymore!
I think another company needs to come along and challenge! Now wonder
I have been looking at the same animations for the last 5 years! SMH!

07 looks great tbf, other than terrible textures. Doubt many sports games from 11 years ago played that well. How anyone ever hit anything with Gary Sheffield and his drunken jedi bat trying to distract you I'll never know.

I am surprised how similar it seems to play, all those plays look like they could still happen on 18, although there is obviously less hit variety. I guess it's baseball though so the way it plays stays fairly consistent, but you'd hope they'd have possibly changed a bit more in over a decade.

The only thing that really bugs me is that they've never addressed the out of proportion size of the fielders. That's the one area I don't think 07 got right. They've always seemed far too big and covered far too much ground, but it doesn't look like they've changed it at all over the years. It messes with everything, it makes it harder to hit singles through the infield, it stops balls falling in the outfield and it generally just doesn't feel right.

Yeah, I cant fathom anyone would be content playing Show 07 for the next few years waiting for a future Show to take a huge flying leap. Are there similarities between now & then? No doubt. But I hope that was done intentionally, for continuity purposes. So if you put those snippets of 07 against a few snippets of 18, they should IMO look a lot alike. But once you get them together for significant playing time, thats where the newer Shows shine. Still, its great seeing the evolution of the Show down through the years. Even if we're not supposed to enjoy it lol

A Franchise over the years might be interesting, see what actually got added or taken away each year (not re-skins, adjusting logic etc, actually feature changes). I swear the PS2 version had things the current one doesn't, but it probably was missing a bunch as well.

Line drive up the middle mails pitcher in head, pitcher recovers makes play for out, uninjured. Same for 07 - 18 lol

Re: MLB The Show Over the Years

I think this is all just kind of misleading to be honest. There are many changes from year to year that can't be seen in these vids. Sure there are a lot of things that look relatively the same. But how much does baseball really change year to year. Now I am not saying there is no room for improvement. I am just saying these vids do not tell the whole story.

Remember BEFORE 30 team control you could get the random franchise bug that stopped you from continuing?

Lets not forget all of the base running glitches that have ruined games in year past.

Or how about in 15 not being able to pickoff runners at 1st without throwing the ball into the stands.

Or on the other side remember being able to bunt in 16 and earlier?

Or not having to deal with money grabbing online crap and micro transaction screens at every click of the x button?

Or remember not having a choice of control scheme or dynamic difficulty.

I am sure you see where I am going. Especially in this forum of OS every opinion on the MLB The Show franchise is going to vary and no one opinion is more or less valid than any other. But these vids do not tell the whole story of this franchise for the good or the bad.

You are missing the point. My post wasnt a wishlist. It was a statement on things that have and have not been in the game and how a series of videos is not going to capture the "spirit" of the franchise thru the years as it wont show the differences between them.

And honestly, the game is shockingly similar to what they sold a decade ago. Tweaks have been made, some good and some bad (as you said), but the core gameplay and look of the game has been fairly constant. One reason I'm really looking forward to the PS4 PYS is that it'll be fascinating to finally see a radically different approach to baseball on the system.
This is the point that I do not understand with some folks and the opinions on this game. Inherently it should NOT look any different from a decade ago or 50 years ago for that matter. Except of course for graphical upgrades obviously. If you watch a "real" baseball game video from a decade ago and one from last season do you expect the game to look different? Obviously except for a graphical upgrade. Baseball today at its core is the same game that has been played since the 1800's. What exactly do you expect the game to look like? It is still Baseball.

Gameplay is only place we should be seeing changes and improvements in my opinion. Besides graphical progress that is inherent to advancement the game should LOOK no different from year to year. It should only play differently. Some years have been better and worse than others but The Show has done that in my opinion. This years game is fresh and the best the gameplay has ever been FOR ME. I am not saying my opinion is the be all and end all of the discussion.

What I am saying or asking more realistically is, that besides graphical improvement, what exactly are you expecting from each years game of the exact same sport that hasn't changed itself? Honestly I am not trying to be flippant here, I want to better understand where you all are coming from, because I personally don't get it.

To me its not that it should look dramatically different but their interpretation of the sport and how they present it needs to be changed frequently. Their approach from year to year is on a very straight line and does deviate much at all. It makes the game feel like that it has not progressed when it fact it has in certain areas. They ride presentational aspects in this game far too long and by the third plus year of seeing it gives you the feeling of been there done that. A perfect example is in the opening scenes before the game you see the 2 batters side by side. We have seen this for 3 years already but they keep running it out there. The game has become very pedestrian in the way it portrays the sport. It needs to feel different from year to year and not by visually seeing a year change in the osd.
