I binged watched this entire series last summer after being years late to watching it and I enjoyed every single episode.

I cannot wait for this. It's been a long 2 years.

Re: Game of thrones: Season 8 (Final season)

I've never watched/read these (always heard about them), but started the books a few months ago and am almost done with Book 3. Have loved them...not sure I want to watch the show though; every time I look a clip up of what I've read in the book it disappoints me.

Did people who had read the books ahead of time find the show a bit of a let down?

Avengers Endgame and The Battle for Winterfell will be on the same weekend. It will also be a 90 minute episode. What a glorious weekend it will be.

I didn’t, but you wouldn’t be alone in that. I love the show despite its differences, but I know many book readers who are upset with the show especially the latter seasons. But I think some book readers are too hard on the show. I mean this is a very deep and complex series. I thought the show did a great job adapting the story for the most part given that they have a budget and schedule they have to abide by unlike GRRM.

If you love the books I’d at least give the show a try. There’s maaany differences so it is not like you’re watching exactly the same thing you read. Some of the changes the show made are excellent. The latter seasons can be a bit deus ex machina like at times, but it’s still great TV IMO.

Not to mention, and idk if you know this, but the books aren’t finished and honestly may never finish. GRRM still has 2 books to go, but he’s like 72 now and it’s been 8 years since book 5. The show began writing the rest of the story on their own during s5, but this upcoming season is the final Game of Thrones season which is supposedly heavily based on what GRRM told the show writers how the books end.

Wife and I binged the day after Christmas and finished the whole series in about 6 weeks (both being teachers and having winter breaks helped this). Loved it so much we immediately started it over. We're in season five, now. Can't believe I missed out on this show for so long.

These are all great points...it's just that I can't see how the show can capture the depth of the books, with the POV and thoughts that you see in characters. Also, from the clips I've watched (I'll read a scene, the Red Wedding for example, and then google it to see how it played out in the show) and I'm actually disappointed in HBO's thematic choices/production value. It just looks cheesy to me...maybe I'll give Season 1 a watch and see if it grabs me.

I do realize the series isn't finished; honestly from what I've read I don't know if it ever will be finished. GRRM seems to be slowing down and there is a lot left to wrap up.

I read every book first (didn't even realize it was a show until season 2 was done). Don't compare to the books. Inevitably you'll be let down at some point because that's how it always is with a book to tv show/film adaption. But now that that's out of the way you must watch the show. It is one of the best series every produced IMO and even though it isn't quite the same it does it's own stuff very well. You are missing out if you don't watch this.

I’m super late in responding haha. Sorry, life is busy these days. Anyway, I’m surprised you found scenes cheesy especially the Red Wedding. The Red Wedding episode is really what catapulted the popularity of the show into what it is today. It’s highly regarded as one of the best shows of all time, up there with The Wire, Breaking Bad, etc. I believe it’s received more Emmy awards than any other show in history including receiving the best drama award 3 times.

Perhaps you just aren’t accustomed to the show so that’s why you were disappointed? Idk. Hope you at least give the show a try though. If you do my only advice would be to try and not compare it to the books while watching. Too many differences and you are correct the show does not catch the depth of the books, but that’s just how it is. Books are always better in story telling IMO.

I'm probably not explaining myself very well. As I have read the books I think GRRM does a great job of describing everything in such detail that you really form a visual in your mind. It has been pretty jarring to watch some of these scenes and they either are very different (for example, Walder Frey is described as this very old, toothless man and in the show he's maybe 60?). The show is done by HBO, so I expected great costumes/sets, etc, but they just don't seem to match up to the descriptions of the books. A perfect example of this is the "purple wedding" scene. In the books, the 77 course dinner is taking place in the great hall at night...and in the show it takes place at mid-day outside with a few score people around. Just doesn't capture at all the scene as you picture it after reading the book.

I hope all that makes sense...not saying the show isn't good (haven't watched it yet), but that it seems so different from the books and wasn't what I expected.

Sportsforever you just have to give the show a chance and keep them separate. Plus who knows if GRRM is gonna finish the books and you'll be stuck in limbo forever. I bet you finish at least the 1st season and you'll keep going.

I understand being disappointed as the books are great but there are just super special moments in the show combined with the phenomenal score that will stick with you forever. Not many people talk about the score, but its special and one of the great scores in media period and that's something a book can't give you.

I listen to the opening credit every single time, I never fast forward no matter how many times I watched these episodes. Plus its awesome how they pinpoint every location they will be visiting in the episode.

Lets also not forget the amazing acting this massive cast has put out as well as the directing. Just phenomenal work by a lot of people.

We got 10 days to go. Should we do a dead pool? I found this on reddit, and one thing I can add is -1 point for incorrect deaths
