      In-season list consists of 12 three-star targets
Head coach John Elliott has offered scholarships to 12 high school seniors in the in-season recruiting period, highlighted by six offensive lineman targets.

Looking to build his future offense around freshmen Justin Keyes and Jim Manning, Elliott has offered three-star tackles Jason Baker (Regina, Saskatchewan), Brian Huston (Passaic, N.J.), Darius Robinson (Laurel, Md.), and Joe Sisk (Amherst, Ohio), and guards Greg Haynes (Carbondale, Pa.) and Jeff Haumiller (Sidney, Ohio). Elliott also has offers out to quarterback Lorenzo Sanders (McKeesport, Pa.), runningback Patrick Brown (Loveland, Ohio), and wide receiver Stephen Carter (Williamsport, Pa.).

On the other side of the ball, defensive ends Jonathan Long (Falls Church, Va.) and Andy Mason (Norwood, Ohio), and outside linebacker Antoine Jackson (Garfield Heights, Ohio) received scholarship offers from Carnegie Mellon.

Jackson, Robinson, and Sisk have CMU ranked the highest among this year’s targets so far.

I echo Moose' words that it is nice to see the passing game factor more into the offense, this will come in handy throughout the season and make the team less one dimensional when on offense.

For sure! I still missed on quite a bit of deep throws with Keyes, but the underneath stuff is like 300 times better than last year's rotation at QB. So I should be able to have a balanced offense as long as he stays healthy, but at least if he were to go down I'd be able to have two quality backs to rely on rather than just Riley.

Season 2, Game 2: Indiana State at Carnegie Mellon

Tartans Finish Comeback to Claim First Win over FCS Foe
Robert Riley scored with 2:24 remaining, completing a 15-0 run to lift Carnegie Mellon to a 22-21 win

by Alicia Brown, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Like last week, Carnegie Mellon kept shooting itself in the foot.

A lost fumble on the first drive and turnover on downs on the second drive, left the Tartans wondering “what if” when trailing 21-7 in the third quarter. But CMU righted the ship, scoring 15 unanswered points to defeat its first NCAA Division I FCS opponent with a 22-21 comeback victory over Indiana State this afternoon at Gesling Stadium.

Carnegie Mellon’s (1-1) second win at the FCS level was just as dramatic as its first, as senior tailback Robert Riley scored from a yard out with 2:24 remaining to put the hosts ahead for good. Riley and freshman Jim Manning combined for 183 rushing yards on 39 carries, and sealed the win with multiple third-down conversions.

“These boys totally deserve this,” said second-year head coach John Elliott. “They were in it again for the entire game, and never gave up on themselves. A win like this at this point of the year can do wonders for the rest of the season. Our guys know they are a bunch of winnable games left on the schedule.”

The Tartans were threatening on their opening drive and seemed to reach the red zone after Justin Keyes connected with Ali Concepcion, but the senior wide receiver was stripped from behind and ended the drive prematurely. Unlike last year’s team, however, CMU returned the momentum swing when freshman cornerback Calvin Burton jumped an errant pass and ran it back 71 yards for a touchdown.

“That pick six by Calvin (Burton) was huge,” said Elliott. “Obviously we didn’t build off that points-wise right away, but that kind of big play was rare last year. We knew right there that this was one we could take.”

Indiana State (0-2) responded with an 84-yard touchdown from a Darrius Gates kick return, then started running its offense through Tony West. West scored from 20 and 53 yards out to extend the Sycamore advantage to 21-7, but Justin Thompson tacked on a 26-yard field goal to make it an 11-point gap through three quarters.

Elliott started to work in a fresh Manning in the fourth quarter, and it paid off in a big way. On a third-and-three play, he lined up his freshman as the upback ahead of Riley and ran a sweep, and the offensive line sprung the rookie for a 52-yard score. Keyes missed on the two-point conversion to keep it 21-16, but CMU kept ISU off the board and regained possession with 5:15 to go.

The Tartans again put together an impressive drive, but faced a third-and-two with 2:53 remaining. Riley got the call and converted, then two plays later finished from a yard away to complete the CMU comeback with 2:24 on the clock.

The Sycamores didn’t threaten on their desperation attempt and turned the ball over after five plays. Although ISU retained a pair of timeouts, Manning broke off a 15-yard run on second down to seal the victory for CMU.

Keyes threw for 144 yards and an interception on 12-of-20 attempts. Burton ended up with two picks on the day, highlighted by the aforementioned 71-yard return touchdown.

West finished with 212 yards and two scores on 24 carries for ISU.

Carnegie Mellon remains in Pittsburgh for another week when it faces the rival Panthers on Saturday, Sept. 15.

by Joe Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

                Burton bestowed with national honors
After collecting a pair of interceptions, running one back 71 yards for a touchdown, freshman cornerback Calvin Burton was named as Coca-Cola NCAA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced in a press release earlier this afternoon.

Burton, a freshman from Edgewood, Md., is the first Tartan to receive a national weekly honor since the team began its transition to NCAA Division I competition. The rookie was rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals, and signed a National Letter of Intent this past February after playing his high school ball at Edgewood High School.

CMU’s top corner also collected three tackles and forced a fumble in the team’s 22-21 victory over Indiana State.

Carter impressed with CMU’s performance against ISU
Three-star wide receiver Stephen Carter (Williamsport, Pa.) tells Tartan Tidbits that he loved Carnegie Mellon’s performance against Indiana State and that they are a favorite for his commitment in the early going.

“For a team to come back like that in just their second year in (Division I), that’s impressive,” said Carter over the phone. “They’re building something special over there and I can definitely see myself being a part of that build.”

Carter had five catches for 90 yards and a touchdown in his season opener with Williamsport.

Jackson, Robinson enjoy unofficial visits to CMU
Three-star linebacker Antoine Jackson (Garfield Heights, Ohio) and offensive tackle Darius Robinson (Laurel, Md.) both were in attendance for Carnegie Mellon’s 22-21 win over Indiana State this past weekend, Tartan Tidbits has learned.

“Really exciting game,” said Jackson in a phone interview. “There was a good energy in the stadium, and it was awesome to see CMU come back like that. “I hope to make another trip out here soon.”

“That was a big win for those guys,” said Robinson over the phone. “After going 1-11 last year and waiting till the end to get that win, to get a win this early in the season is clear improvement. They’re building something good there.”

                Morale high entering Pitt week
Carnegie Mellon has high spirits leading into this weekend’s rivalry matchup with Pitt, Tartan Tidbits understands.

Coming off a 22-21 win over Indiana State, the Tartans reportedly have more confidence that coincides with the Panthers’ performance in 2007 thus far. Pitt is 1-1 with a 28-7 win over Norfolk State and a 41-28 loss to Central Florida.

Some of CMU’s belief also stems from recruiting, where the Tartans had beaten their rivals to freshman linebacker Aaron Crosby and guard Eric Fraser, both who are first-year starters.

Season 2, Game 3: Carnegie Mellon at Pittsburgh - Steel City Showdown

Carnegie Mellon Humbled, Blanked by Pitt in Rivalry Matchup
Riding high from last week's win, the Tartans were brought back to earth by their Steel City rivals

by Alicia Brown, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The mood was different this week on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University, and there was a sense of belief in the air entering the second matchup in as many years with city rival Pitt.

That optimism vanished after a scoreless first quarter, as the superior Panthers shut out the Tartans, 35-0, this afternoon at Heinz Field. Pitt (2-1) outgained Carnegie Mellon (1-2), 480-163, in total offense and rushed for 286 yards compared to the visitors’ 59.

“We were humbled today,” said second-year head coach John Elliott. “Plain and simple. We put in a good week of practice, and were coming off that big win against Indiana State – and (Pitt) just took it to us. We understand that this build isn’t going to happen overnight, but it’s hard not to be a little disappointed with how today went.”

First-year starter Bill Stull was efficient through the air, tossing three touchdowns and rushing for another in the third quarter. The duo of Rashad Jennings and LaRod Stephens-Howling combined for 263 yards on 33 carries (7.8 yards per carry), with Jennings capping the blowout on a 66-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run.

“It’s good to see our team click on all cylinders,” said Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt. “Bill (Stull) did a great job picking his spots in the passing game and our backs kept drives going.”

Freshman signal-caller Justin Keyes struggled in his first state of the rivalry, only amassing 80 yards passing to go along with an interception. Neither senior tailback Robert Riley (21 carries, 57 yards) or freshman Jim Manning (6 carries, 17 yards) broke three yards a carry, and junior wide receiver Pete Carlson went out in the second quarter with a back injury.

Carnegie Mellon is back in action next Saturday, Sept. 22 at Southern Illinois.

H2P!!!! Congrats on your first win in the week prior, though! I think that it is inevitable that you will end up with a few wins this season. The balance in the attack is definitely paying dividends, plus the defense has looked solid against the FCS level schools. Sounds like the recruiting class is benefiting from the improved performance as well.

Thanks! I definitely think we'll get a few more this season, even the one-star guys I brought in had higher ratings that most of my returnees, so they're all contributing in one way or another - plus most of the FCS squads have a few 70-something players and the rest in the 40s and 50s. I really hope this momentum will carry into recruiting though, because I'll probably really struggle next year with a full FBS slate if I don't bring in a bigger class.

Carlson good to go for Southern Illinois
Junior wide receiver Pete Carlson will play this Saturday at Southern Illinois after leaving last week’s game at Pitt with a back injury, Tartan Tidbits understands.

Carlson has a team-high 12 catches and 148 yards receiving this season. He did not record a catch before his injury last week, and freshman quarterback Justin Keyes completed just eight passes for 80 yards without his top option.
                          Freshman corner suspended three games
First-year cornerback Hayden Temple will serve a three-game suspension for violation of team rules, beginning this Saturday at Southern Illinois, Tartan Tidbits reports.

Temple, who has been the Tartans’ primary slot corner in nickel and dime sets thus far, has tallied seven tackles and a pass deflection through three games. Senior Brent Matthews will be elevated to fill the rookie’s role.
Maryland offensive tackle lists CMU in top five
Three-star offensive tackle Darius Robinson (Laurel, Md.) has trimmed his college list to five schools, and Carnegie Mellon has made the cut, Tartan Tidbits has learned.

Robinson, a six-foot-three, 304-pound bookend from Laurel High School, lists the Tartans alongside West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, and Ohio State. CMU is the reported favorite for his services thus far.
Canadian offensive tackle likes Carnegie Mellon
Three-star offensive tackle Jason Baker (Regina, Saskatchewan) has moved Carnegie Mellon up to third on his college list, Tartan Tidbits understands.

“CMU has been showing me a lot of love,” said Baker in a phone interview. “They’ve been constantly sending me messages and tell me that I’m an important piece to their rebuild. That’s something I love hearing, and a challenge I’m willing to take.”

Michigan is listed as the current favorite, followed by Ohio State, CMU, Rutgers, and Boston College.

Tartans Topped on Road at Southern Illinois, 35-23
Robert Riley ran for 182 yards and two touchdowns, but the senior fumbled late to end a comeback attempt

by Jayson Thomas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Carnegie Mellon received a career performance from senior tailback Robert Riley, but a late fumble by the Tartans captain spoiled the visitors’ comeback attempt as they fell to Southern Illinois this afternoon, 35-23.

Riley rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries for Carnegie Mellon (1-3), but he was stripped of the football with 2:50 to play near midfield that gave the ball back to Southern Illinois (2-2). The Salukis added a touchdown with 11 seconds remaining to make the gap bigger than the game actually was.

“These are games that we should be competitive in here in year two,” said second-year head coach John Elliott. “So we did achieve that at the very least. But this was also winnable, and to not do so is tough. I know all the guys (in the locker room) are itching for more wins and don’t want to go through a year like the last one. To do that though, we have to take advantage of these kind of games.”

The senior tailback got the lion’s share of the carries after freshman Jim Manning left the game following his first carry. Riley and junior Tramon McCollum averaged 5.4 yards per carry between themselves, but the two couldn’t complete cover a stagnant passing game that saw freshman Justin Keyes accumulate 75 yards on 27 attempts.

Even with the quarterback struggles, the Tartans kept pace with the Salukis, having an answer the Salukis’ opening three touchdowns. Justin Thompson kicked a 31-yard field goal with 8:01 remaining to put CMU in front, 23-21, but John Randle answered with his fourth of five touchdowns to give SIU back the lead less than four minutes later. After Riley’s late fumble, the hosts rode Randle some more and he finished his career afternoon with a fourth rushing touchdown in the closing seconds.

Randle finished the day with 234 yards on 25 carries, and 24 yards on three catches.

Carnegie Mellon has a short turnaround this coming week, as it hosts Rhode Island on Friday, Sept. 28.

I'm a little late on this, but nice comeback win against Indiana State! Keyes is already looking like an upgrade!

Also, this is very late, but my Titans drafted Adrian Peterson?!?! I'm totally ok with that lol!

Love how unique this dynasty is all together though. So neat seeing all these updates with guys I grew up watching. Also love how you're editing the incoming recruits. Cam Newton AND Dez Bryant at Miami is an amazing duo.
