Smoky Mountain State University V2 | Teambuilder Dynasty (NCAA 14)

Some friends and I started playing an online dynasty where we are building up 1* prestige schools... And it instantly reminded me how much fun that concept is and how much fun this Dynasty was at first.

I started a Smoky Mountain State Dynasty on OS about 3-ish years ago and lost interest for the sole purpose of the fact that we became such a good team in such a ridiculously short time frame.

So, I'm starting a new SMSU Dynasty, but this time, I have MUCH tougher recruiting restrictions to make it more challenging and hopefully more realistic. And to make it to where our inaugural team isn't real good, I knocked the overall ratings down on every player from my first recruiting class. I managed to find about 5-7 76+ gems in that class and I imported that first class directly onto the team via Teambuilder. Now with my recent edits, no Freshman is over 72 overall. Due to this, our overall rating went down to 66, so we're now the worst team in the FBS!

To add to the recruiting restrictions, I'm going to have a specific recruit criteria that I will have to stick to because it will be tailored for my play style and the system that I want to run. So if the recruit doesn't meet the criteria I have for each position, I cannot recruit them. I'll detail the criteria below.

The write-up style will still be from Coach Danny Carmichael's perspective.

The Dynasty will start in 2019 as I've downloaded the OS 2019 rosters. The first few posts will be me introducing the school, their plans for a football team, and the 2019 preview.

    Dynasty Info

    Console: PS3
    Quarters: 6 Minutes
    Difficulty: Heisman
    Rosters: 2019-20 OS Rosters
Sliders: Matt10's Heisman sliders with a couple tweaks
Draft Classes: Every draft class will be imported into Madden. I'll follow along with every SMSU player's career once they get to the NFL.
Offensive System: Spread Option (Run more like a Spread offense... I just like specific formation/play combinations that I've only seen in this playbook)
    Defensive System: 4-3

    Recruiting Restrictions

I can't recruit any player ranked #1-#750 until I become more successful.

I cannot recruit any 4 or 5 star recruit at any point during the Dynasty. I want this Dynasty to be an underdog story where we find 3 star gems and build a top program that way.

However, with every Bowl win and Conference Championship, the restriction gets a tad more lenient:
    • For each C-USA Championship that I win, I can take 25 off the restriction (so I can't recruit anyone ranked #1-#725). (NO LONGER APPLICABLE NOW THAT SMSU IS INDEPENDENT)
    • For a bowl win over a non-Power 5 team, I can take 15 off the restriction.
    • For a bowl win against a Power-5 team, I can take 25 off the restriction.
    • For a BCS bowl appearance, I can take 30 off the restriction
    • For a BCS bowl win, I can take 50 off the restriction.
    • For each 10 win season, I can take 25 off the restriction as long as at least 7 of the wins occur against Power-5 schools. (Added following Independent move)

4/5/20 ADDITION: Cannot recruit any JUCO players
5/6/2020 EDIT: I previously had it to where as soon as I join a Power 5 conference I can recruit any 3 star. I'm taking that away and making it to where I have to work my way there through the restrictions listed above.
7/23 EDIT: I cannot recruit any player (excluding HB's, WR's, and TE's) ranked #1-#499 at any point during the Dynasty. Since it's harder for me to find HB's, WR's, and TE's that fit my system, I won't be able to recruit any HB, WR, or TE ranked #1-#350 at any point during the Dynasty.

    Recruit Criteria

QB: 6'1", 85+ Throw Power, 78+ Throw Accuracy
    HB: 90+ Speed
    WR: 90+ Speed
    TE: 6'3"+
    OT: 6'5"+
    OG/OC: 6'3"+
    DL: 6'3"+
    LB: 6'0"+, 80+ Speed
    DB: 86+ Speed

EDIT ON 4/26: Changed QB recruit criteria due to switching offensive schemes.

How I Decided On This Recruiting Restriction

I'm having SMSU join the C-USA and I went through and looked at every C-USA team's recruiting class over the past 5 years... And they very rarely recruit players ranked higher than 750. So that's why I set my cap there.

I know this will be an effective recruiting restriction because I went back and looked at my ridiculously lucky class that I got the last full year of my last SMSU Dynasty. 20 of the 25 players in the class were ranked from 249-750 (there were only 240-something players rated as a 4 or 5 star in that class... I've never seen a class with that few 4* players before). Of the 5 players in my class that weren't in the Top 750, 3 were JUCO's, 1 was a Punter, and 1 was a 71 overall TE. So gone are the days of me landing a 3 star QB that's a +7 or +8 gem to get up to 80 Overall!

    SMOKY MOUNTAIN STATE UNIVERSITY

    HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

    Campus Design.jpg
    Artist rendition of the campus

Smoky Mountain State University is a public university located in Gatlinburg, TN. SMSU was founded in 1996 making it one of the newer public universities in the country. The school was one of the fastest growing universities in the country. By 2000, SMSU had a student population of 15,187. As of today, February 2016, the school currently has 20,422 students enrolled. Only The University of Tennessee and the University of Memphis have more students enrolled.

Part of the reason why SMSU has such a large student body is because it's one of the cheapest universities in the country. Why is it so cheap? With all of the money that comes into Gatlinburg through tourist attractions, the local government, along with donors, help fund the university. SMSU also offers a discount in tuition to any student living within a 100 mile radius of the campus. So obviously students who live in the state of Tennessee get in-state tuition, but in-state tuition will also apply to students living in North Georgia and on the Western border of North Carolina since SMSU is so close to the south eastern border of Tennessee.

    ABOUT GATLINBURG, TN

    Gatlinburg.jpg
View of downtown Gatlinburg at night

SMSU is located in the heart of a major tourist attraction. Not only is SMSU located near the Great Smoky Mountains, but it's also in Gatlinburg, TN and near Pigeon Forge, TN. Gatlinburg is an important tourism destination in Tennessee, with many man-made attractions, and it borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Ober Gatlinburg is the only ski resort in Tennessee. Another popular attraction is Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies which opened to the public in 1997. Dollywood and Dollywood's Splash Country, which are both named for Dolly Parton, are amusement parks located in nearby Pigeon Forge. Oh and if you like go karts, classic arcades, and miniature golf, you're DEFINITELY in the right place! Gatlinburg is an hour away from Knoxville and about 2 and a half hours away from Chattanooga.

    ABOUT SMSU SPORTS

    kodiaks preview.png
In 1996, the school announced the nickname for future sports teams... The Kodiak.

SMSU didn't have any sports team until 1998. However, in the school's first year (1996), the school introduced their nickname and logo for their future sports teams… The Kodiak.

Anyway, as facilities were being constructed, coaches were hired in baseball, softball, men's/women's basketball, volleyball, and rowing. They had 2 years to recruit athletes before play began. SMSU first began play in the SoCon. However, after success in baseball, softball, and basketball, the school decided to bring football into the equation to help the school become even more profitable.

So, in March of 2017 the school president, Dr. David Doss, announced that SMSU would form a football team which would start playing in the fall of 2019.

Two weeks later, local high school coach Danny Carmichael was hired as the first head football coach of the new SMSU Kodiak football program. Carmichael, 36 years old, had won 3 State Championship in 4 years with Sevier County High School in nearby Sevierville, TN. Sevier County was nationally ranked for the first time in the school's history. It was a no brainer. Get a great, young offensive mind in Carmichael who had already won Championships despite being so young. Since Carmichael is still pretty young, and since he was a high school coach, he could relate better with the players he was recruiting, which could really help SMSU in recruiting. However, the knack against Carmichael is his inexperience, especially at the college level.

    SMSU Uniforms.jpg
From left to right: Home Uniform, Away Uniform, Alternate 1, Alternate 2

In June 2017, the SMSU uniforms were released. Nike designed and created the uniforms for the Kodiaks' new program.

In August 2017, it was announced that SMSU would not join the SoCon in football. But, it would become a member of Conference-USA on the FBS level. An interesting move for the new program since all other sports compete in the SoCon. However, that really boosted recruiting efforts and helped Carmichael and his staff in landing their 2019 class.

SMSU's football home: Great Smoky Mountain Stadium

On January 7, 2019, the Kodiaks’ football stadium was completed. The football stadium was named Great Smoky Mountain Stadium as it has a beautiful view of the mountains in the background. Great Smoky Mountain Stadium is located across the street from the practice fields you see on the campus layout. It is a 50,000 seat facility that will also be used as a concert venue and as a future high school championship game venue.

                2019 Signing Class

What better way to start off this program then by talking about the first SMSU football Signing Class.

I'm incredibly pleased with how well our staff recruited. Generally, recruiting rankings don't mean a thing... But, to fans they do. And when you're a new football program, or a program on the rise, a highly rated recruiting class is a great way to build hype around the program. Thankfully, this staff is full of great recruiters and we came away with a really highly rated Signing Class.

In fact, ESPN ranked our class as the #35 class in the country. It was the #1 Signing Class among the Group 5 schools. It was also among the highest rated Group 5 Signing Classes of all time. I'd say that's a damn good way to build hype around this program.

We signed a full class of 25 players. 21 of those players were 3* recruits and 4 of the players were 2* recruits. 4 of them we didn't have any contact with throughout the season... On Signing Day they just decided they wanted to join the Kodiak family.

So, how'd we do it? How was our first Signing Class one of the highest rated Group 5 classes of all time? It was really simple. You're a brand new program, no proven players, so we plugged playing time. Obviously some of these kids will come in and start immediately. We also plugged the campus since we're in the heart of a huge tourist town. Finally, we told the players we recruited that they could come in and write their own legacy. Here, they won't be compared to anyone. But, when they come in and ball out, in 5-10 years people will be comparing incoming SMSU signees to players from this 1st Signing Class. They also get to write the history books for this program. They are the ones who can jump start this program and start our takeover. Those factors were key in how we were able to sign such a great class.

This class helped fill a LOT of our needs. I'll break down the Signing Class by position.

QB: We needed serious help here. There wasn't really a QB on the roster who could run the offense to its full potential. We run a Spread Option offense, which all but requires that you have a scrambling QB. That's something we really didn't have. So, we recruited and thankfully signed 3* JUCO athlete Tony Amos. Amos has a huge arm and will probably be on of the more athletic QB's in the country. However, he's not very accurate. His accuracy should improve over time with proper coaching and in game experience. So, this season may be a bit rough for him. But, mark my words, Amos will be a star.

HB: We have a solid HB in Norris Blalock. He will be our starter as he will definitely be the most talented back on our team. We did bring in two guys who fit our offensive philosophy of speed. I love having fast, elusive players at QB, RB, and WR. Both 3* HB Jason Strong and 2* JUCO ATH Tauren Peters are fast, elusive backs. Both will provide an impact on our team this year. Strong will be our #2 back while Peters will be our Kick/Punt Returner.

WR: We got 3 really good players. 3* Steven McDaniel (6'2, 199 lbs.), 3* Nick Brewer (6'4, 195 lbs.), and 3* Terrence Cole (5'10, 190 lbs.). All 3 are completely different receivers. McDaniel is the fastest of the three. Brewer will be a great go to guy on 3rd down as he's got great hands. Cole isn't a very polished receiver, but he's very athletic and elusive. Cole is the type of player who you give him the ball in space and he'll make big plays. Cole will be a good player in a couple years after he works on his catching and route running. On the other hand, Brewer, and McDaniel will make an immediate impact for us.

TE: We got a massive 3* TE recruit in Joe Bush. When I say massive, I mean MASSIVE. Bush is 6'7, 260 lbs. Bush is incredibly athletic for his size, but he's not a polished player in any phase of the game. He's got decent hands, but everything else needs some work. Once he develops more, he will be a really big weapon for us.

OT: At tackle we signed 2 players we really like. 3* JUCO Sophomore Caleb Newman (6'7, 323 lbs.) and 3* Scott Simmons (6'5, 285 lbs.). Both are considered better at Pass Blocking than Run Blocking. Newman will come in an start immediately while we'll probably redshirt Simmons this season.

OG: At Guard we signed 2 players, 3* Joe Alvarez (6'5, 296 lbs.) and 2* Anthony Ryan (6'5, 280 lbs.). My staff and I really like the size of both of these guys. Alvarez is a better Pass Blocker than Run Blocker while there isn't much difference between Ryan's Pass Blocking and Run Blocking skills. Alvarez was a diamond in the rough find by our staff. He will more than likely come in and start from Day 1... That's almost unheard of... A True Freshman Lineman coming in and starting from Day 1 on campus.

OC: We signed 2* Michael Hayford (6'6, 287 lbs.). Another OL with great size. Hayford is the only lineman that we signed who's a better Run Blocker than Pass Blocker. While Hayford was a great find for us, he will redshirt this season.

DE: Ohhhhhhh man I love the DE's we signed. We signed 4 of them... Two of them will stay at DE while the other two will move to DT. 3* Matt Chase (6'3, 232 lbs.) and 3* Kenny Cannon (6'4, 235 lbs.) will stay at DE. 3* James Thompson (6'3, 272 lbs.) and 2* JUCO Sophomore Ross Newberry (6'3, 280 lbs.) will transition to DT. Chase and Cannon are going to be absolute stars. Thankfully, Thompson and Newberry have the size and skill set to play DT because we couldn't keep a DT interested in us to save our lives. That has to change in our 2017 Signing Class.

LB: We signed 3 LB's... 2 OLB's and 1 MLB. At OLB we signed Andrew Baker (6'1, 213 lbs.) and 3* Ray Jones (6'2, 224 lbs.). At MLB we signed 3* Scott Thompson (6'1, 206 lbs.). Baker and Thompson are pretty undersized. I believe that's the reason a lot of Power 5 schools passed on them. If they both were 6'3, 220 lbs. I believe they would highly coveted by Power 5 schools. But, both of them will play big roles on our team moving forward as they're both very talented. Jones will probably be redshirted this season.

CB: We're going to hit the secondary hard on the recruiting trail just about every season. Because with all of the pass happy Spread/Air Raid offenses, you need good cover corners. So, at CB we signed 3 players: Jamaal Jenkins (6'0, 179 lbs.), James Durbin (5'11, 197 lbs.), and Corey Neal (6'0, 182 lbs.). Jenkins will be an absolute star while Durbin and Neal have the potential to be really good players for us. What scares me is the 3 of them are the 3 most talented CB's on our roster. What scares me even more than that is the fact that the only other CB's on our roster are all Seniors. So, in our 2017 Class, we will desperately need to go after JUCO CB's.

S: We signed 1 FS and 1 SS. At FS we signed 3* Shannon Lee (5'11, 180 lbs.) and at SS we signed 3* Kris Fordinal (6'1, 199 lbs.). Fordinal will be a star. We also really like Shannon Lee's potential at FS. We think he can develop and be a really good player for us. Fordinal will start at SS while Lee redshirts.

ST: Finally, we needed to sign a Kicker. However, we signed the #13 Punter in the country in Tyler Livingston. His rating is laughable. I promise you he was easily one of the Top 5 Punters in the country. We love his potential at Kicker, so he'll transition from Punter to Kicker for us.

All-in-all I believe we'll look back at this Signing Class in 4-5 years and be stunned by the impact these players made in our program.

This is just the beginning of something special.

Really like your recruiting restrictions. The day I decide to start a new thread, I am going to steal/borrow this idea..

Thanks, I appreciate it! I think I've figured out the format for how I want to do my write-ups... If it turns out like I'm imagining them, this will (hopefully) continue to be a very interesting Dynasty report!

                        Thanks for the comment!

Go for it! I was going to do this Dynasty without making it a report on OS. But the recruiting restrictions/criteria popped in my head as I was setting up the up-to-date conferences and I knew it was interesting enough to post on OS.

I appreciate the comment as well!

Senior CB Art Green delivered the highlight of the day for the Kodiaks on his 88 yard pick six

                            Game Summary

The nerves really set in for this one. This day has been a culmination of 2 years of extremely hard work and preparation. We were finally, officially, taking the field with a makeshift roster full of transfers from smaller schools and 1 recruiting class.

Opening lines for the game had Vanderbilt as 28 point favorites. So that was my personal, realistic goal… Beat the spread. Because at this point in our program, again being realistic, we’re nothing more than a glorified FCS team. So that puts an even bigger need in top notch gameplans week in and week out.

The first half, bluntly put, was rough. And that should have been expected. This is the first game in our team’s history and we’re playing an SEC opponent on the road. However, I was impressed how the offense moved the ball down the field. The only problem was, we just couldn’t finish drives. Our only score of the 1st Half came late in the 1st Quarter as Freshman Kicker, Tyler Livingston, drilled a 39 yarder.

Meanwhile, we gave up 17 points to Vanderbilt in the 1st half. They scored on their first drive, courtesy of a 30 yard pass from Riley Neal to Sophomore wideout, C.J. Bolar. Bolar would go on to absolutely light us up… But more on him later.

Vandy put 10 more points on the board during the 2nd Quarter thanks to a 37 yard field goal and a 13 yard pitch and catch from Riley Neal to Senior WR Kalija Lipscomb.

We went back to the locker room at half time and I told our guys that we’re playing great, we just need to finish. No one expected us to be down by two scores going into halftime. We were playing well above the expectations that the college football world had placed on us heading into the game. We were only two scores down and had two quarters to catch back up. With how our guys fought, I believed in them. They believed in us as a coaching staff.

                            And we fought back.

After a couple punts, we scored our program’s first touchdown. HB Norris Blalock took the handoff and sprinted through a hole that our offensive line created. The hole was so wide, you could’ve fit a semi-truck in it. Blalock sprinted 28 yards for the TD and that was easily our best all-around offensive play of the game.

Vanderbilt drove down the field on their next drive, but made a costly mistake in the redzone. Riley Neal lofted a ball towards the sideline on an out route. The route was jumped by Senior CB, Art Green. Green picked the ball off and ran it back 88 yards for the pick six! So not only was it the first interception and turnover forced in our program’s history, it was also the first defensive touchdown in program history. And thanks to the pick six, we were tied up at 17 going into the 4th Quarter!

The Commodores marched down the field and quickly scored on a FG to take a 20-17 lead with 4:14 left in the game. We responded with a picture perfect drive led by QB Tony Amos. Amos capped off an 11 play drive on a 1 yard read option keeper. And we had the 24-20 lead with 2:21 left in the game.
We were 2:21 away from a MASSIVE upset in our first game.

The excitement from the lead didn’t last long, however. We quickly forced Vanderbilt into a 4th and 6 situation. But, Riley Neal connected with C.J. Bolar for a 26 yard play. On the next play, Neal hit Bolar again, this time for 29 yards. And on their next play, Neal hit Senior Kaljia Lipscomb for a 22 yard TD.

In 3 plays, we went from almost forcing a punt, and basically sealing the upset victory… To giving up the go-ahead TD with 1:34 left.
We had a valiant effort on our final drive but ended up turning the ball over around the 50 yard line as we failed to convert a 4th and 4.

The Commodores hang on to win 27-24, but damn, what a game by our guys. This game taught me that no matter the opponent this year, we’re going to be able to stand a legitimate chance. It’s going to be an interesting year, for sure.

                            Offense Breakdown

                            The Good: Everything

Typically, I’d go through and have “The Good”, “The Bad”, and “The Ugly” sections… Honestly, there were no bad or ugly parts of our offense. The only thing we need to do better is finish drives, that’s about it. And for the record, this is the only time that won't appear in the "bad" or "ugly" sections of a breakdown. But, besides that, our guys executed well. Tony Amos completed 21 of 27 passes for 277 yards, which is good for a 77% completion percentage. That’s utterly incredible in your debut game, on the road, throwing to Freshmen and FCS transfers. We ran the ball effectively too. Norris Blalock carried the ball 17 times for 101 yards for 1 TD. He averaged 5.9 yards per carry, against an SEC opponent. Which is absolutely fantastic considering the make up of our team. Freshman WR Nick Brewer had 6 catches for 102 yards in his collegiate debut, while fellow Freshman WR Steven McDaniel hauled in 6 catches for 76 yards.

And can I just talk about the offensive line real fast? These guys played one helluva game. They only allowed 1 sack and allowed just 5 tackles for loss all game. They are the reason we were able to hang in there today. They gave Amos more than enough time to get passes off most of the time. All-in-all, I’m excited to see how we can continue to grow on offense as they really played well today.

                            Defense Breakdown

                            The Good: The Freshmen

Our Freshmen played extremely well today. Freshman RE Kenny Cannon recorded the first sack in program history. MLB Scott Thompson flew around to the football and totaled 5 tackles while always being in the vicinity when a tackle was being made. Kenny Cannon and SS Kris Fordinal also recorded 5 tackles with Fordinal knocking away a pass that would’ve helped Vanderbilt convert a 3rd down play. Jamaal Jenkins shadowed their top WR, Kalija Lipscomb, all game and only allowed 3 catches. LE Matt Chase recorded 4 tackles and 1 TFL. It was a great start to each of these guys’ collegiate careers, especially considering they were up against an SEC opponent.

                            The Bad: Our Pass Rush

Our pass rush must improve over time. I’m well aware that we were up against an SEC offense with an experienced/talented offensive line. But we brought 5 guys on a blitz a couple times, and all 5 guys just got absolutely swallowed up by their O-Line. And that was basically how today went. Riley Neal had all day to throw the ball. The only times we got a legitimate pass rush came on our two sacks, 1 from RE Kenny Cannon, the other from Senior ROLB Reuben Bellamy. We have to improve in this area throughout the year.

                            The Ugly: Secondary Breakdowns

Riley Neal went 21/34 with a career high 391 passing yards against us. C.J. Bolar, who I mentioned earlier, totaled 7 catches for 171 yards and 1 TD. Slot WR, Chris Pierce, had 5 catches for 105 yards. Kalija Lipscomb, averaged 21.0 yards per catch on his 3 catches. The Commodores are not known for gashing their opponents through the air. So we really have to work on avoiding secondary assignment breakdowns when running zone coverage.
Because you can’t give up 11 20+ yard passes and expect to win games, regardless of the opponent.

Overall, we played extremely well. We shocked a lot of people and gained some confidence heading into our game next week against a tough West Virginia team.

Man that would have been one hell of a scalp for the Kodiaks if they could have just got the win but a beautiful start to the season with the team actually firing and able to run & pass the ball with success. Shame how it went down with giving away the lead right at the end of the game, that's when you know the team is still very much work in progress as it's a hard slog to move the ball in crunch moments. But a proud day for the Kodiaks.

The pick 6 for 88 yards, beautiful!
