Motor City Bound: Tartans Punch Ticket to MAC Title Tilt
With its 31-26 win over Buffalo, Carnegie Mellon will be competing for a conference title in just its second FBS season

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- In year four of Carnegie Mellon’s Division I transition and its second season in FBS competition, the expectation was to improve upon its 3-9 finish from 2008 and hopefully reach the six-win plateau for bowl qualification. The team showed flashes over the previous two campaigns, and with the roster featuring primarily Division I recruiting classes, it wasn’t an outrageous task.
That six-win mark was met last Saturday against Kent State. And only then did the program realize it could accomplish something special with another victory to end the regular season.
Behind another All-American performance by junior runningback Jim Manning, Carnegie Mellon punched its ticket to next week’s MAC Championship Game with a 31-26 win over Buffalo this afternoon from Gesling Stadium. The Tartans will face No. 19 Toledo in a rematch of a game played on Oct. 10, one the Rockets won, 54-32.
“I’m being completely honest with you – we didn’t know our positioning until after last week’s win,” said CMU fourth-year head coach John Elliott. “It wasn’t ever on our minds. We just took it one game at a time and wanted to reach the goal of six wins to make a bowl, and after that happened it was like, ‘Guys, we can win this division with one more win.’ I’m so proud of how we’ve been playing and I know I sound biased, but there isn’t a group more deserving of this success than this one.”
Following Kent State’s 27-24 win over Akron on Wednesday, Carnegie Mellon (7-5, 6-2 MAC) knew it just needed to take care of business this afternoon in order to set up a rematch with Toledo. Buffalo (6-6, 3-5 MAC) had other ideas however, scoring on its second drive from an Aaron Connacher seven-yard run to take a 7-3 lead.
The Tartans hadn’t started slow in weeks, but were facing a 7-3 deficit following 15 minutes. That changed quickly though, as the offense leaned on Manning early in the second frame and he rewarded them with a five-yard touchdown to make it 10-7. The Bulls struck back just minutes later after Brett Hodges found Skyler Hagg open on a fly route for a 53-yard score, but the hosts went back to the program’s all-time rushing leader to retake the lead, 17-13, with a four-yard plunge.
CMU forced its first three-and-out on the ensuing drive, putting itself in position take all the momentum into the break with another score. This time it was Justin Keyes’ time to shine, as the third-year quarterback converted a third and 12 with a deep pass to Stephen Carter, then scored on a four-yard bootleg to extend the gap to 24-13. That score would hold until the 5:16 mark of the third quarter as Buffalo called third-string tailback Da’Von McCune’s number to trim the deficit to five points.
The Bulls were threatening inside the red zone with 10 minutes remaining, but then Hodges made his only mistake of the day by throwing an interception to Todd Andriano. The Tartans would take advantage of the big play, riding Manning’s legs down the field once again before finishing the drive off with a 16-yard trip to paydirt. Buffalo responded with an extended drive that led to a Hodges 20-yard strike to Daniel Williamson to make it 31-26, but CMU forced the visitors to spend all their timeouts and never let them get another chance.
This is Manning’s ninth 100-yard rushing performance of the season and his sixth consecutive. He has accumulated 1,055 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground over this stretch.
Matt Burnsides brought down Hodges in the second quarter, picking up his team-high eighth sack of the season.
Carnegie Mellon will face No. 19 Toledo in the MAC Championship Game on Saturday, December 12 at 8:00 PM. Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)
by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com
London locks in pledge to CMUCarnegie Mellon landed its first and only commitment of the in-season recruiting period this weekend in three-star free safety Jabari London (South Laurel, Md.).
London, a six-foot, 191-pound defensive back from Laurel High School, originally made his official visit to CMU on Nov. 14 when it played Maryland and gave a soft verbal afterward. He took his other official visits to Vanderbilt and Bowling Green, before deciding to join the Tartans’ crowded defensive back ranks.
The Maryland-bred free safety should compete for playing time in three-safety and six-defensive back looks, and could serve as the primary backup to current sophomore Todd Andriano. London has tallied five interceptions and three sacks this season with Laurel.
Michigan nabs Bracey, Mikulec; McMillian commits to GeorgiaCarnegie Mellon lost out on its three other remaining in-season targets as cornerback Richard Bracey (North Madison, Ohio) and offensive tackle Jim Mikulec (Plum, Pa.) committed to Michigan, while wide receiver Jake McMillian (Seven Oaks, S.C.) pledged to Georgia.
Bracey and Mikulec had given the Tartans soft verbals following their official visits on Nov. 21, but wanted to take one last visit to Ann Arbor before making their decisions. After the Wolverines’ 27-21 upset victory over Ohio State, the duo committed to the Big Ten school on the spot.
For McMillian, he never considered CMU one of his favorites and kept the team in third following his official visit. He was also considering Miami (Fla.).
Tartans projected to play in Insight BowlIn this week’s release of bowl projections, ESPN has Carnegie Mellon playing in the Insight Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
The projections match the Tartans up with 8-4 Michigan State in one of the last games before the calendar turns over to 2010. Other MAC projections include: #17 Toledo against Princeton in the Motor City Bowl, Ball State versus #15 Iowa in the Champs Sports Bowl, Central Michigan facing North Carolina in the International Bowl, and Kent State playing Central Florida in the GMAC Bowl.
Manning looking at nation’s rushing titleWith nine straight 100-yard performances under his belt, junior runningback Jim Manning has taken the national lead in rushing yards with at least two games to go.
Manning has accumulated a school-record 1,802 rushing yards this season, and ranks second behind Navy sophomore Chris Polk in carries (289) and rushing touchdowns (22). The Reisterstown, Md. native also has 32 catches, 384 yards, and four receiving touchdowns in an expanded role in the passing game, and is projected as a late round pick in next April’s NFL Draft.
Williams unhappy, may look to transferRumors have emerged that freshman quarterback Bryan Williams may look to transfer from Carnegie Mellon after the semester is complete.
Williams, who competed for the starting job in fall camp with incumbent starter Justin Keyes and classmate Kevin Wilson, finished third in the battle and was tabbed to redshirt. With Wilson performing moderately well (125.9 QB rtg., 17-32, 238 yards, 1 TD) in spot duty, and Keyes taking control of the job for one more season, the earliest Williams may see the field would be in 2011 as a third-year sophomore.
The Charlottesville, Va. native was one of the biggest snags of CMU’s last recruiting class, coming in as the 58th-ranked quarterback nationally with a three-star ranking. He was one of three in-season commitments for the Tartans, joining current freshman starters Matt Burnsides and Joey Muhammad.

Author's Note: Total mistake on my part regarding Bryan Williams' desire to transfer. In NCAA 08, you can promise recruits a number of different things (jersey number, playing time, starting position) if they request it. (Matt Burnsides, my star freshman defensive tackle, for instance, requested the number 29 and I agreed to it. So if he didn't wear 29 this year, he was leaving no matter how great of season he had.) After losing out on my other quarterback target and with Keyes' struggles, I knew I needed to sign Williams to provide some sort of cover there, and he asked to promise him to let him play quarterback and not move him to another position (which he doesn't have the attributes for anyways). I took it as an easy way to secure his commitment and keep him in the stable if he didn't get the starting job, since I wasn't moving him from the QB position, but apparently he wanted to start right away. I swore there was another option requesting an immediate starting job, but I guess not.
tl;dr version: I apparently promised Williams the starting job in his recruitment but he didn't have the ratings to suffice, and now he's leaving and I have to recruit 1-2 quarterbacks in the offseason.Comment

Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)
Let's gooooooooo.... Jabari is in the house! Big signing there, haven't even seen his ratings but I feel like I've been singing this kid's praises from day one so hopefully he is able to live up to expectations and be a big contributor.
Great win against Buffalo to clinch the title berth, MAC truck Manning running like a tank as per usual and Keyes doing his usual adequate job... big thing there was no interceptions this week for once! Excited to see how the title game goes, could be big things on the horizon for the Tartans!Check out my Pitt Panthers Dynasty (NCAA Football 14)

Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)
I wish that was more of factor in NCAA 14 with not being able to fulfill promises leading to transferring. Seems much more sensitive in '07. Tough break. But also a good signing and is coach going to call plays trying to get Jim Manning the rushing title? Would be great for recruiting hahaComment

Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)
I completely forgot about the promises in 2008. A DT wanting to wear #29 is pretty fun.
Players recruited to as a QB and asked to move to different positions is pretty common in college football I feel, so I think that's cool that it is in the game, but so is Freshman who think they are amazing and should start right away.
Last year there was a situation at BSU where the FR QB started against FSU, played a few games, then got hurt. The backups came in and did their job and helped BSU win some much needed games, including a Senior who transfered from Kansas. When it came time for the Bowl game, the Freshman QB I have been told threatened to transfer if he didn't get a chance to start the Bowl game even though the team was playing better with the SR transfer QB at the time. The Coaching staff caved under pressure from Boosters to start the Freshman and BSU lost.Comment

I've always been fond of the athletes who have good ratings at QB and other positions, and would like to get one or two for CMU at some point during this report. Williams was not that however (IIRC, McMillian was a better fit for the spread offense as a dual-threat), so him requesting to "stay" at QB was weird to me. Makes more sense that he wanted the starting job and I still probably would have promised it to him all things considered, because I figured he'd have some solid ratings and force himself into the lineup. But alas, he'll be heading off more than likely and I'll have to replace him in the offseason.Comment
