Season 5, Game 6: Toledo at Carnegie Mellon

CMU Defense Grounds Rockets in Revenge Blowout
Carnegie Mellon’s defense didn’t allow a single point, as Toledo only scored on two kick returns and a pick six

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Nearly 10 months ago, Carnegie Mellon had its hearts crushed by an undefeated Toledo side in comeback fashion at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championship Game. The Tartans’ locker room was filled with clippings from their 33-27 loss, but the extra motivation didn’t seem necessary as they exacted some revenge on the Rockets with a 43-21 victory this afternoon from Gesling Stadium.

Carnegie Mellon (4-2, 3-0 MAC) used a dominant defensive effort to top Toledo (3-2, 1-1 MAC), holding the visitors without an offensive touchdown. The Rockets only found the end zone via two kick returns and an interception, and was outgained by the Tartans offensively, 462-74, and 279-(-2) on the ground.

“Really proud of how the defense bounced back after last week (against Bowling Green),” said CMU fifth-year head coach John Elliott. “Despite losing most of their starters, Toledo has a ton of talent on that side of the ball and (Travaris) Cadet is a threat both throwing and running. We really were able to shake off the early kick return and hit them in the mouth – figuratively speaking – and our offense just churned out drive after drive on the ground. I know putting the (newspaper) clippings in the guys’ lockers is a cheap motivation ploy, and we didn’t need a reminder of how we felt after last December, but I do think it allowed us to play with more of an edge than usual.”

After Carl Ford broke a tackle and ran back the opening kickoff to the house, CMU brushed itself off and put together a tying response on a Justin Keyes five-yard option keeper. The drive was extended with three offside penalties, one coming off a missed third-down pass. Keyes missed putting the Tartans up 14-7 with a red zone interception, but Mark Toth picked his quarterback up with a strip sack of Travaris Cadet. Nate Satele followed that up with an 18-yard burst, setting up a Keyes nine-yard toss to Stephen Carter to make it 14-7 after a quarter.

Satele fell victim to his fumbling issue once again in the second quarter, but back-to-back sacks gave the ball back to the Tartans on a three and out. However, Keyes made his second mistake of the day right after the punt as Akeem Byrum jumped a telegraphed curl route and ran back the interception 16 yards for a touchdown, making it 17-14 with 5:53 left in the half. All the momentum seemed with Toledo after an early CMU punt, but Todd Andriano swung it back with an easy interception of Cadet, and Keyes then ripped off a 54-yard option dash to extend the gap to 24-14. The hosts would add a Jon Foster field goal at the end of the half to make it a 13-point game.

The Tartans began the second half with a 10-play, 57-yard drive, ending it with a Keyes option pitch to Kelvin Butler for an eight-yard score. CMU’s defense then took over without forcing a bevy of turnovers, instead limiting the Rockets to short drives and multiple punts. Foster booted three more field goals to add to the lead, while Cameron Mobley answered the second of those on an 88-yard kick return to make the score look more respectable.

Keyes didn’t have the same clean performance he did last December, but managed to compile 298 yards (183 pass, 115 rush) and three total touchdowns (2 rush). On the other end, Cadet threw for just 76 yards on 10-of-21 passing and the interception to Andriano.

Toth starred for the Tartans defense, recording 10 tackles, a pair of sacks, and three forced fumbles. Zac Hood also brought down Cadet twice, and Aaron Crosby and Matt Burnsides netted a sack each. Crosby also forced a pair of fumbles, recovering one of them.

Carnegie Mellon continues its three-game home stand on Saturday, October 16 with an 8:00 p.m. kick against Western Michigan.

Well the Defense played great and it was another solid day for Eddie the Eagle Williams, the Key to that victory was named Justin... Yeah the 2 INT hurt but his rushing stats including that 54 yd TD. That was a huge score cause it was 17-14 at the time.

I can't believe they not only returned 1 big Kickoff for a TD but 2. Special teams better step it up

Holy smokes, what a day for the defense. Has to be your most dominant defensive effort ever, with the big stops as well as the fact that you held Toledo in double digits yardage wise? Crazy. Funny to say that a statline like 7-99 for Eddie is just an average day for him, that's how much he's jumped on the scene. Keyes continuing to shoulder most of the load for the offense, just have to keep him out of harm's way as far as the injury bug is concerned with all the hits he is taking.

Yeah it wasn't the cleanest game for Keyes, but he was pretty steady both throwing and running and just put together extended drives. That 54-yard dash was all him because he had a defender in his face early and faked the pitch with McIntire covered, freezing Toledo just long enough for him to escape the tackle and race to the end zone. I'm definitely going to miss that game-breaking ability next year if I have to roll with someone currently on the depth chart as the QB.

I can't think of a better defensive effort in this report, the guys were certainly up to the task and had revenge on their minds! Toledo's offense is still pretty talented but Toth really set the tone early and I guess the rest of the defense (virtually) fed off his energy, haha. Williams' 7-99 effort definitely seemed quiet, which is insane considering how desperate I was for a WR1 in the first few years of this! I definitely would like to deter Keyes from taking so many hits, but I'm not sure if that's possible unless Satele or McIntire step up so I might just be crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)

by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

Toth named MAC Defensive Player of the Week
Junior middle linebacker Mark Toth collected MAC Defensive Player of the Week honors following his dominant performance against Toledo over the weekend. He collected a team-high 10 tackles, two sacks, and forced three fumbles in the 43-21 triumph.

Toth is enjoying another stellar season with 44 tackles, six sacks, and the aforementioned three forced fumbles. He now has 176 tackles, 16 sacks, seven interceptions, and 12 forced fumbles over his career.

Andriano closing in on school record for interceptions
Third-year free safety Todd Andriano added another interception to his mantle last Saturday against Toledo, and is closing in on the school record of 17, established by Calvin Burton last year.

Andriano is now at 15 interceptions, six coming this season. The junior shares the national lead with Texas A&M redshirt sophomore Jim Bush.

Gilmore makes unofficial visit to CMU over weekend
Three-star runningback Jeff Gilmore (Winnipeg, Manitoba) made the long trip to Pittsburgh for an unofficial visit to Carnegie Mellon last weekend, and moved the Tartans to the top of his list after their win over Toledo.

Gilmore, a five-foot-eight, 200-pound tailback from Portage Collegiate, is already planning to make an official visit to the Steel City later this month or in early November. He is one of the coaching staff’s highest priorities in the in-season recruiting period, considering how uneven the runningback position is currently with neither freshman Lawrence McIntire and junior Nate Satele sticking out.

Manning sees time in Bears’ win over Patriots
Jim Manning has had a quiet start to his rookie season with the Chicago Bears, but managed to record his first regular-season stats over the weekend as he totaled 58 yards (46 rush, 12 rec) on 14 touches (13 rush, 1 rec) in the Bears’ 35-23 win against the New England Patriots.

Manning, who was drafted in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft, is currently the second runningback on the Chicago depth chart behind Cedric Benson.

Tom Cook sets official visit for Oct. 23
Three-star linebacker Tom Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has trimmed his school list from five to three schools, and has set an official visit date to Carnegie Mellon for Oct. 23 when it hosts Army.

Cook, a six-foot-four, 213-pound product from Woodland Hills High School, is visiting the Tartans first but ranks them third currently. Pitt and Penn are the other two schools in the linebacker’s top three.

Ward leaves Tartans in top five
Three-star quarterback Bryan Ward (Monessen, Pa.) cut his school list from eight to five schools over the weekend and has kept Carnegie Mellon in the hunt for his services.

Ward, a six-foot-three, 215-pound signal-caller from Monessen High School, lists the Tartans fourth out of five schools. Ohio State, Michigan, and Virginia Tech sit as his top three, with Central Michigan rounding out the five.

                  Saturday, October 16, 2010 | 8:00 PM (ET)
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Gesling Stadium | No television

Team Overview (D overall, D+ offense, D defense)
After opening the season with four straight losses by double-digits, it looked like Western Michigan was on pace for a forgettable 2010. However, the Broncos have bounced back as of late with wins at Buffalo and Ball State – the latter being an impressive 42-9 one to move the team to 2-1 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play.

True freshman Aaron Smith (92.7 QB rtg., 82-167, 877 yards, 7 TD, 12 INT; 45 carries, 239 yards, 3 TD) starts at quarterback for WMU, but classmate Adam Bracken (130.9 QB rtg., 28-53, 446 yards, 3 TD, 3 INT) has also seen time and threw three touchdowns against Ball State. The two rookies are opposites – Smith is a scrambler, Bracken more of a pocket passer – but Smith projects as more of the Broncos’ future at the position. Fifth-year runningback Bobby Crawford (50 carries, 280 yards, 3 TD; 8 catches, 79 yards, 1 TD) is receiving his first carries this season as the starter, while classmate Jamelle Murray (39 catches, 508 yards, 6 TD) is in his third year as a starting wide receiver. Murray is paired with redshirt senior Jordan White (37 catches, 488 yards, 1 TD) on the outside, giving Smith two reliable targets in the passing game.

Sophomore defensive tackle Steve Scott (25 tackles, 5 sacks, 2 FF) and third-year free safety Craig Brooks (10 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TD) are the Broncos’ top two defensive players, giving the team some pieces to build around. Scott is joined on the defensive line by redshirt junior defensive ends Andrew Wersel (13 tackles, 1 sack) and Alvin Almicar (24 tackles), and fellow tackle Donnell Bobcock (16 tackles, 2 sacks). The linebacker group starts two sophomores in Jon Woods (35 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FR) and David Bowling (31 tackles, 1 sack, 2 FR), while Brooks is the youngest player in the secondary. Fourth-year junior Mario Armstrong (13 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, 1 FR, 1 TD) has had a solid start to the year at strong safety.

Redshirt sophomore Kendrick Perry (5-5 FG, 17-18 XP) has been nearly perfect in his first year as the primary kicker, and he’s not the only newcomer specialist as freshman Dan Preston (16 punts, 682 yards, 42.6 avg., 5 inside 20) punts for WMU. Murray (16 kick returns, 356 yards; 14 punt returns, 125 yards) is a dangerous threat in the return game, and White (12 kick returns, 273 yards; 4 punt returns, 43 yards) also brings back kicks and punts.

I feel like CMU wins this by 2 scores . Something like 31-17 or 28-14. Hopefully another big day for the Eagle with 5-7 rec and 100+ yds. Would also be nice if the run game besides Keyes can step up. Maybe try and give McIntire the bulk of the carries 17-20 and see what he can do.

I also feel I should win this one comfortably, but Smith's mobility scares me a tad - although I just shut down a better quarterback in Cadet. Getting something out of the rushing attack is a priority in this one, would love to see either McIntire or Satele step up and put together a strong performance!

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Carnegie Mellon remained unbeaten in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play this evening, overcoming a slow start to defeat Western Michigan, 30-28, from Gesling Stadium.

Carnegie Mellon (5-2, 4-0 MAC) trailed Western Michigan (2-5, 2-2 MAC), 7-3, through a quarter but took full control of the game in the second frame by outscoring the visitors, 21-3. The Tartans’ defense allowed just one offensive touchdown after blanking the Toledo offense last week, while the offense received a career rushing performance from Nate Satele, who rumbled over the Broncos defense to the tune of 142 yards and two scores on 19 carries.

“We were just a little off in that first quarter offensively,” said CMU fifth-year head coach John Elliott. “Justin (Keyes) missed some open receivers, Lawrence (McIntire) picked up an injury on his first carry, and then (Western Michigan) had that fumble recovery score with their defensive tackle coming in unblocked on our quarterback. I’m proud of Nate (Satele) for stepping up and really leading the charge on that touchdown drive in the second quarter, and that really seemed to spark the guys moving forward.”

CMU’s defense was doing all the heavy lifting in the early going, forcing multiple three-and-outs while the offense tried to find its footing. Leading 3-0, Lawrence McIntire took his first handoff and was immediately met at the line of scrimmage by Steve Scott. The impact forced him out of the contest, and on the very next play Scott made his presence known once again by coming through unblocked to strip-sack Justin Keyes. Alvin Almicar picked up the loose ball and rumbled 35 yards to put WMU up 7-3 in the opening frame.

Down their freshman tailback, the Tartans leaned on Satele on the ensuing drive as he touched the ball six times over the next 11 plays. His five-yard burst on the second play of the next quarter put the hosts back in front, 10-7, and after Rob Jones picked off an Aaron Smith pass from his slot cornerback spot, Keyes found David Young four plays later for an 11-yard score to swing all the momentum in favor of CMU.

Despite the talent difference, the Broncos kept within an arm’s length of CMU, netting a pair of Kendrick Perry field goals to make it a two-score game at 24-13. That’s when the Tartans churned out another extended drive – this one of 12 plays – and although another Scott sack and Satele five-yard loss forced a third and goal from the 23, Keyes went to his favorite target in Eddie Williams and the redshirt freshman hauled in a 23-yard score to put the game to bed.

Keyes put forth another strong performance through the air, throwing for 238 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-32 passing. Williams continued his stellar rookie season with seven receptions for 126 yards and the aforementioned touchdown, while Carter added five catches for 52 yards and a trip to paydirt.

Both teams’ star defensive tackles – CMU’s Matt Burnsides and WMU’s Steve Scott – picked up a pair of sacks.

Carnegie Mellon leaves MAC play for a week as it continues its home stand, welcoming Army to Gesling Stadium on Saturday, October 23.

Big day from Satele! An overall fantastic day from the offense, once they woke up. This was one of those games that you know your team is better, but a few slip ups make you question what’s going to happen next. Then everything starts to fall into place. Luckily everything fell into place sooner rather than later.

Nice seeing you back, Bigsheen! Satele definitely stepped up - particularly with McIntire's injury - and it was exactly what this offense needed. I've been begging for consistency on that front, and maybe that opportunity was just what the junior tailback needed. Even better that his performance came when I got off to a slow start, as that first scoring drive was all him and really got everything clicking on offense. Hopefully he can keep this up!
