Warriors Draft Review 2001.
June 29th, 2001.
New GM Mike Hobbs is only a few weeks in the role and had to make some franchise altering draft picks in the past few days. The Warriors have a very poor roster with some underacheiving players, and some over the hill vets. This upcoming season Hobbs has the difficult task of clearing out the dead wood, and bringing in some new fresh faces. The Warriors need some life brought into their roster before stars like Antwan Jamison start looking at where their next destination might be. With the hiring of a self proclaimed offensive guru in Mike D'Antoni, GM Hobbs seems to be arming him with some young athletic players to run with.
We took a look below at the first official moves by GM Hobbs:
Warriors Draft Selections.
#5 - SG Jason Richardson, 6-6, So., Michigan State
With the fifth pick in the draft, the Warriors passed on Shane Battier and Eddie Griffin to take Richardson, which frankly was a surprise. Richardson is an athletic swingman who could play shooting guard with Larry Hughes playing the point, giving the Warriors high-fliers at a number of spots. Richardson doesn't have a great outside shot, and some question his maturity, but then again this might be the perfect team for him if that's the case.
#14 - SF Gerald Wallace, 6-7, Fr., Alabama
Wallace spent one year in school and he didn't even average double figures on points. Put Wallace alongside a good point guard on the break and he'll score, but this remains a raw kid.
#31 - SG Gilbert Arenas, 6-3, So., Arizona
Arenas is another early-entry candidate, but is pretty mature and can score. He could find a role on this team. Had a real showing out party in dragging Arizona to the final 4 in March Madness. The Warriors will hope that Arenas didn't just catch lighting in a bottle.
