Found A Major Fix for 2K: Making Teams Play With IRL Tactics, Usage, Spacing + Pace

We've all experienced this problem on 2K: teams + players not playing like their real-life counterparts. Usually the issue comes down to four things: spacing, tactics, usage rate, + rotations.

I believe I've found a method to fix all 4, and I applied this method to the 2K21 Bucks on Next Gen (PS5). In the following video you can see how the CPU Bucks have changed in 20 major ways after my modding and the result is the most NBA authentic 2K experience you can have playing against the Bucks.

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/H6D644Db2T0" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Please download the roster file "SamPham Bucks 2021 Finals Tendo" and test it out for me ? It will be great if you guys can post your experience + box scores on here. I truly believe I am at the beginning of being able to deliver an authentic NBA tactics experience for everyone on 2K with CPU teams. The more feedback I can get the better. Hopefully this helps all of you enjoy the game more. Let me know how you do against these modded 2021 Finals Bucks, Thank you !

    Sam

I appreciate the support but I think one big reason 2K can't do this is because it doesn't suit into any of their modes (long term). We all know most devs are already loaded with work, for 2K to do something like this they will have to assign one guy to update a new team weekly. And this is meant to be a one 7 game series experience, if someone was to simulate 10 years with these modded Bucks I think they will end up playing weird even with just one roster change anywhere down the line.

I can tell you right now, modding these final bucks probably took 6 hours of research, and an other 6 hours on the actual modding + subsequent testing. I was able to do this relatively quickly b/c i was watching the finals closely so the research part was already done.

I can't see 2K dedicating their resources on this just to satisfy the hardcore SIM 2K gamers like ourselves. But I'll try to do as many of these as I can for you guys, they are time consuming but i will try my best.

I have to give 2K props tho, the foundation is there for some pretty amazing gameplay. They just need to keep tweaking it and really dedicate on creating an authentic NBA challenge, is possible but out of the box is not close.

Going to get heat for this, but I wonder if 2k spent less time funneling their time & resources into making all these whacky fantasy modes, they'd actually be able to put some solid time into getting tendencies and signatures right, to get players playing the way they should, instead of us having to spend several months, every iteration, having to modify everything, just to get teams to play anywhere near their real life counterparts....

Sam already answered this but they can’t even get the stars right.

Donovan Mitchell is a two legged jumper who’s only explosive going left and needs space yet on here he has all these contact dunk animations off one foot. He plays like prime Dwade on here when they don’t attack the same.

Sam, are there any sliders to tweak or other settings or just load the roster and play?

Got in a quick 10 mins before the draft. I never seen such great spacing by the computer. Realistic ball movement and attacking at the correct moment and hitting the open man in the corner when I tried to help. On defense they were switching off and I actually saw a double team on Trae Young after he had a couple of assists!!!! Great job!!!!! They ended up by one before I turned it off.

Is there a way to get this to be universally applied to every team on MyNBA mode?

And is there any trick to getting specifically the switching on defense and doubling guards to apply to any game via sliders??

No slider tweaks at all from me, I am not against a user doing that to the file once they download it. All the modding I did focused on 4 things; player usage rate, spacing, team/roster specific tactics, + lineup rotation. I do suggest to play on HOF difficulty, CPU seems to perform and execute the best that way.

Wow man. Playing against the Bucks right now and I’m absolutely loving it. The offense is flowing so smoothly. Can’t wait for more of your work!

I really hope a dev gets in contact with you to find out what you did because this is wild. The offense was so balanced and the cpu makes great reads. I’ve played against these bucks maybe six times already and it’s great every time. Amazing job.

It is worth clarifying that "realistic" and "fixed" means different things to different people.

                      Point #1 from video:
Brook Lopez will not set foot in the paint 95% of the time.

Only 44% of Lopez's FGA IRL were threes. This is considerably down from the 65% he attempted in 2019. While turning Brook Lopez into Luke Kornet or Mike Muscala might be realistic to some, it isn't to anyone who follows the player/team at anything more than a surface level.

Lopez has a post game, While his average FGA distance was 19 feet three years ago, that number was all the way down to 14 feet this year.

                      Synergy profile (Regular season)
                      ON-BALL
                      12% Postups (11% Playoffs)
                      1% Isolation (0.4% Playoffs)
                      0% PNR
                      OFF-BALL
                      29% Spotup (25% Playoffs)
17% Roll Man (10% Playoffs) - Worth noting less than a third of these were threes.
                      11% Cut (18% Playoffs)
                      3% Handoff (0.4% Playoffs)
                      0% Screen
                      NON-HALFCOURT
                      12% Transition (16% Playoffs)
                      8% Putback (14% Playoffs)
                      5% Misc (5% Playoffs)

On top of being an Inside/Outside player, Lopez was clearly used more like a traditional big during the playoffs. Saying that he never sets foot inside the paint and calling it "the correct usage" is simply not accurate.

"Middleton will get his first mid-range at the end of the game, just as he does in real life."

Middleton attempted 255 long mid-range shots (16-23 feet) this year (91 games).
He attempted 302 short mid-range shots (10-15 feet).
                        He's attempting 6 mid-range shots per game.

I'm all about content and promoting roster work. I'm not about misleading people for clicks.

Breakdown of Lopez in the Finals. He spent most of this in the paint.
He plays with Bobby Portis as much as he does Giannis. The way he is used next to the former clearly differs from next to the latter.
He also rolled towards the rim in just about every PNR.

I also want to point out that most of what was showed in OP's video is actually not much different from what the defaults do. The shot charts in particular. The game is already mostly rim / threes without much mid-range.

I play with six minute quarters and he was averaging about 18ppg. Honestly, I didn’t see him attempt and spin moves but he was attempting euros. Brook Lopez wasn’t scared to shoot threes, but he also had some surprising drives against me. Middleton was getting a screen and pulling up from the free throw line/elbow areas. Holiday was hard to play against. I really enjoy these edits man, I sincerely do. Please share with us whenever you have any updates.
