I really enjoy the soundtrack in 2k almost every year, I like a lot of the announced artists, and to add more songs throughout the year is a win for everyone, however....Come on this is basically your first in-depth feature announcement for the year and it's the music.

Seems par for the course for modern 2K games. Used to love when their soundtracks had underground appeal but I guess that's the price you pay for success.

I say this half-jokingly, but I swear Gran Turismo 4 had a classical music playlist that was turned off by default but if you knew well enough, you could toggle it on and listen to that instead. At this point... I don't think I'd mind that as an option in 2K. Above all else, I miss being able to use my own music in the menus like you could in the 360 days.

Exactly. This whole basketball = black / urban culture = hiphop like music is played out, time for something fresh. It's kind of racist and silly that all these soundtracks are just limited to basically hiphop.

That definitely isn't racist at all, like V said just a changing of the times and 2K's target audience.

I agree that more musical diversity would be nice, but market trends and other factors (public reception) says otherwise.

I don’t think it’s a race thing but basketball and hip hop are intrinsically linked, the soundtrack will always be predominantly hip hop.

Now saying hip hop = black culture is a little different. It’s mostly black but it’s denigrating to black culture to say hip hop is the one defining genre considering soul, disco, R&B and funk are all dominated by black artists. They just don’t affiliate with basketball all that much.

You can guess some of the songs just from the artists and they’re songs I like so I don’t have any problem with it. It’s literally background music between games so I don’t care too much.

People Under the Stairs is close to old school. Nas depending on the songs. If you are a hip-hop fan there are some good artists here. Mick Jenkins has some good tracks. Bishop Neru with MF DOOM is usually pretty good. Freddie Gibbs is pretty dope. Jack Harlows not bad, my guess is they'll have his "Tyler Herro" song.

I just want them to get this soundtrack stuff out of the way so we can get to the important stuff. I always forget that the Soundtrack is usually the first piece of info. To me it doesn't matter how good or bad the soundtrack is. I don't pay enough attention to it and if I really don't like it I'll just run Spotify in the background.

Totally missed People Under the Stairs and MF DOOM my first scan through. I wonder if that's their way of paying tribute to Double K and DOOM, both of whom passed this past year. Would be kind of a nice callback to when both artists were on 2K prior.

DOOM was at least on 2K9 (thought it was earlier than this but I guess not)

People Under the Stairs was on NBA 2K5 and I think NFL 2K5 too.

In fact, 2K played a relatively significant role in introducing me to artists and groups during that timespan. Similar to the Tony Hawk series and GTA, it sort of allowed me to sample other genres, sub-genres, or different artists in genres I knew. I miss that part of their soundtrack experience.

Here I was just the other day thinking “Man, 2K used to have great soundtracks just a couple years ago” before I realized I was thinking of 2K8-2K13.

Soooo no country then? Or Metal? House? Hell, even Score's from movies?

Mute again for me. Same as nearly every year.

                        No biggie.

Ironically around 70-80% of the consumers of hip hop are white. Not only that hip hop went corporate in the 90’s it’s not black culture. If you don’t finance or have control how could it be black culture.

                              Spoiler

Wow great call back to those old 2K soundtracks! Hard to remember all the classic tracks they've used over the years. Definitely agree about Tony Hawk and GTA. Good introduction to songs and artists I would have otherwise missed out on, especially at that young of an age. Also big shout out to NBA Street Vol 2 for having "They Reminisce Over You" as the first song to grace your ears. That song and game are inseparable to me.

I do feel like now days it's rare for more to hear a song on a
videgame soundtrack that appeals to me, unless it's an artist or song I'm already familiar with. I miss hearing surprise gems while playing a videogame.
