For example, they'd tried to make an impossible carry over a hazard, rather than taking a drop in a safe area. It happened often enough to where it was annoying, but when it didn't happen it was really good. This type for problem could be overcome with a little more development.

100% agree. A career mode where each round of golf matches you with a different AI player would be great. I dream with a game of golf like this.
