        2021-2022 League Awards

        1st Team All-NBA

This is pretty much a "who's who" of the NBA with Luka ascending into the upper echelon of players across the league, James Harden rejuvenating himself in Philly and LeBron James, Nikola Jokica and Giannis Antetokounmpo continue to show that their respective games have staying power.

        2nd Team All-NBA

Four of the five guys on this 2nd team - Bradley Beal, Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler and Anthony Davis - are no strangers to getting league-wide recognition. The inclusion of the Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a new addition and almost unprecedented since he had never even been named to a 3rd team before.

        3rd Team All-NBA

The third team sees two young guns - LaMelo Ball and Zion Williamson - pretty much cement themselves into the elite of the league for the next 6-10 years while the other three - Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid - continue to add to their Hall of Fame resumes.

        1st Team All Defense

        2nd Team All Defense

        1st Team All Rookie

        2nd Team All Rookie

28-8-5 on 54/34/91 splits is really good for SGA. Glad he got 2nd team and surprised he didn't get MIP.

I'm hoping for a Milwaukee vs Memphis/New Orleans Finals.

?Ask me about the Xbox Ally handheld - I'm on the team that made it.

For being my go-to guy while learning to play this game, I was pleasantly surprised with SGA's efficiency. His 54% from the field is definitely inflated due to playing on a lower difficulty for the first 2/3rds of the season and being able to get to the rim at will, but that 34% from three is pretty solid all things considered. I was shocked to see him on the 2nd team, but looking at the numbers around the league it shouldn't have. Being 3rd in the league in points and assists has to count for something, right?

Call me a sucker, but I want Sacramento in the Finals. I don't think it will happen but it would be a fun little story. If I'm picking a legitimate winner, I think it's going to be New Orleans and Milwaukee here.

Re: Thunder Up! Rebuild in OKC [NBA 2k22]

In what was looking like the coronation of the new face of the league, the script was flipped. After splitting the first two games in Brooklyn, Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks took a commanding 3-1 lead after winning their two home games. Just one win away from becoming THE face of the NBA and the basketball world, Doncic could not close the deal.

The Brooklyn Nets leaned on their Big Three and took it one game at a time. Kyrie Irving needed to score in bunches. The 6th Man of the Year and 1st Team All-Defense member Ben Simmons needed to do a little bit of everything, including slowing down Luka. And 3rd Team All-NBA member Kevin Durant was to be the cold-blooded killer when the team needed it most.

Game 5, Game 6, Game 7 gave the same results: a Nets win! The confetti rained down in the Barclays Center. Over the broadcast all you could hear was Mike Breen's voice shouting "The Nets are your 2022 NBA Champions!"

With the trophy presentation being prepared, there was no debate on who would be hoisting the Bill Russell Award for NBA Finals MVP:

Still irked by being named to just the 3rd team All-NBA, Durant made it his mission to go out and remind the world that he was still to be mentioned with all the best players in the world. Over the seven games he was averaging over 31 a night, but also grabbing rebounds and dishing out assists while shooting a scintillating 65% from deep. With the Mavericks running out a 4-wing lineup to start, Durant was shooting over everyone with ease. Once he got going from beyond the arc in the series, the confidence was through the roof and it was as if he was shooting in an empty gym.

                ----------

                Playoff Notes:
                - Rizzo's fun pick in the West, the Sacramento Kings, got swept in the 1st round
                - studbucket's Pelicans pushed the Mavs to a Game 7 but fell just short
                - we both picked the Bucks in the East but they ran into the buzz saw in Brooklyn
                - three of the final four teams were play-in tournament participants (Mavs, Suns, Celtics)

                ----------

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to arguably the craziest times in sports:

                the NBA offseason!

Man, what a Finals! Luka and Dallas choked it away, blowing a 3-1 lead lives with you forever. Durant got his ring by coming back down 3-1, a great way to wash away the stains to his reputation ... gonna be an interesting offseason.

Yes absolutely thrilling Finals, though I really wanted to go back and look at box scores or even sim game by game rather than the entire round. Any help on how to do that? As I’m thinking about it now, would I need to do 30-team control and sim that way?

So if you want to see the Box Scores of the various series, you should be able to hover over the series in whatever round (say the Finals) and just press the "A" button on your controller (for Xbox) or the "X" button (for Playstation).

From there it'll bring up the box score of the last game played, and then you can press the "Y" button (on Xbox) or Triangle button (on Playstation) to switch the box scores to another game (it goes in order, so Game 1>2>3 etc).

At least that's how it works in 2K20 (with full control of every team, admittedly, so it may not be applicable).

If it doesn't work like that, you can always go into the MyLeague/MyNBA settings and select whatever team made the Finals (either Dallas or Brooklyn) to control and then view the scores that way.
                      Any comments are welcome.

Yeah, when I do the playoffs, I sim 1 round at a time, looking at every box score and looking for interesting trends/stories/injuries/crazy stats. I do it exactly as Trek says, and I think it was that way back in 2K16 as well, so I can't imagine it's changed much in 2K20 if it was the same in 16-20.

Crazy to think the Nets played 29 regular season games and 23 playoff games

                          Much appreciated fellas!

Was thinking about season length and playoff series lengths and thinking there may need to be a tweak.

I know that KD hasn’t exactly gotten his due because his titles were won in GS but this epic series comeback has to give the haters something to appreciate. This was clearly his team and he carried them from start to finish.

                              Retired Players

Across the entire league we saw just eight total players announce their intentions to retire…well nine…but ultimately eight! Let’s discuss.

The most sentimental of the departures has to be the epitome of Heat Culture: Udonis Haslem. The player-coach finally hangs up the sneaks after a remarkable 17-year career at the age of 42! How big of a role did he play on that bench in Miami? We will find out in the near future.

The list of the remaining retirements goes as followed:
                              - Trevor Ariza (16 years pro, 37 years old)
                              - Joe Johnson (16, 41)
                              - JJ Redick (14, 38)
                              - Jared Dudely (13, 38)
                              - Anderson Varejao (13, 39)
                              - Taj Gibson (12, 37)
                              - Wayne Ellington (12, 34)

Aside from Haslem, the only players on the list above that actually played in the NBA last season were Gibson (New York Knicks) and Ellington (Lakers).

                              Speaking of the Lakers…

It was falsely announced that LeBron James was done with his basketball career. He was the headliner of the retirement list, sure-fire 1st ballot Hall of Famer and would have had his day in Springfield all to himself. And then he didn’t.

After NBA Twitter exploded with the news that James was retiring from the game of basketball, LeBron himself took to the floor of Crypto.com Arena and wanted to make it very clear to the world: he was not done hooping just yet. After leading the Lakers to the 1-seed in the Western Conference last year and getting beat in just six games by the 8-seed Suns, LeBron wasn’t going out like that.

Here’s to one more year left of greatness for LeBron James!

                              Rule Changes

During the league meetings conducted after the season, there were a myriad of ideas voted upon by the league’s 30 general managers. In order for any of these proposals to be passed, 23 of the 30 needed to vote yes to enact change in the league.

Two of the proposals passed with little friction from the league: both the Rising Stars Challenge and the All-Star games would see their rosters increased from 12 to 13 players each. With so much talent in the league, it was a no-brainer to add another player to each roster of their respective games in order to showcase the league’s best and brightest players.

There was one more proposal agreed upon with the minimum requisite votes needed. As of the 2023 NBA Draft, players are now eligible to be drafted once they reach 18 years of age. This means the drafting of high school players is now an option for NBA franchises, one that has been bandied about for quite some time.

There were two other proposals discussed and ultimately rejected. A shocking vote that garnered 20 votes of approval before being rejected was to have a full reset of the shot clock when possession remained with the same team. In a league that has pushed for faster play and more possessions, this was an eye-opening vote that many didn’t expect to see.

The last one that was rejected by all but one general manager was to have the trade deadline pushed back by a full week. It’s clear that the league likes where that is as of now, though sources around the league would assume that Danny Ainge was the lone vote for this rule change as he’s always working the phones looking to fleece another team in a deal.

                              League Expansion
For years there have been murmurs about league expansion. There’s so much money to be had in the NBA, especially with its explosion into a global game, that adding two new teams would seem to make a ton of sense at this point. Of course the two obvious locations most people point to are Seattle and Las Vegas. Regardless of what the fans want, the league’s front office is weighing all options and is very content with the 30 franchises it currently has, seeing as it fits in perfectly with the 29-game schedule the league currently plays.

If the league were to decide to increase the number of games played in the season, expansion would then become a legitimate option. With the growing popularity of the sport, there would be no shortage of interested parties looking to buy into the league. With two years left on the current CBA and nine years on the current TV deal, there is plenty of time to discuss expansion going forward.

Thunder Up! Rebuild in OKC [NBA 2k22]

No league moves at a more rapid pace than the National Basketball Association. Just mere days after NBA champion Brooklyn Nets had been crowned, eternal hope blooms among the worst teams the league saw last season. After slogging through an entire season without the opportunity to play in the postseason, tonight is the night that they cross their fingers and hope that the Lottery Gods shine down on them and see them select at the top of the 2022 NBA Draft.

The 14 teams that did not make the playoffs are listed above. With certain protections placed on some of these first round picks, the owner of these picks could change hands over the course of the 15-minute lottery presentation, completely changing the fortunes of the respective franchises.

In talking with draft pundits, it seems like this draft has a Tier 1 that is populated with just two names: Gonzaga center Chet Holmgren and Duke forward Paolo Banchero. The teams that land in the top-2 know that they are walking away from the draft with a franchise guy that, at worst, should develop into a 2nd fiddle of a championship contender. After Holmgren and Banchero, there is a grouping of players that have their respective strengths and weaknesses that need to be sorted out, developed and nurtured to squeeze all the potential out of them.

Based on the odds, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets both have a 14.0% chance at winning the lottery. Both franchises would be satisfied leaving this draft in either spot knowing that they are getting a big man to fit in with their current young core of wing players.

For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey are already cemented as the premier ball handlers. With one of them on the floor at all times, the offense is in their hands. With their deficiency on the glass, both Holmgren and Banchero would immediately come in and be their best rebounder. Both are able to stretch the floor to three, although Banchero is the more pure scorer of the two. A shot blocking specialist, Holmgren would be able to clean up a lot of mistakes that we saw on the perimeter by the young Thunder wings.

In Houston, they secured a young, dynamic scorer in Jalen Green in the 2021 NBA Draft with the #2 selection. They also selected 2nd Team All-Rookie center Alperen Sengun last year who played well next to Christian Wood, but could Wood be out the door for a continued youth movement and rebuild? If so, both Holmgren and Banchero would fit in perfectly with both of their young cornerstones.

If either team were to fall out of the top-2, the season could be seen as a complete waste.

As Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum stepped to the podium to announce the picks in reverse order, you could feel the tense silence come over the room. The lottery results began to be revealed.

The league wants to thank all of the representatives of our 14 lottery teams for being here and wishing you, your franchise and, most importantly, your fan bases, the best of luck tonight. Here are the results of our 2022 NBA Draft Lottery!

                                14 - Minnesota Timberwolves

                                13 - Indiana Pacers

                                12 - Portland Trail Blazers

Due to being lottery protected, this pick was never in jeopardy of being conveyed to the Chicago Bulls.

                                11 - Memphis Grizzlies

This pick was top-6 protected by the Utah Jazz from the Mike Conley trade just a couple seasons ago.

                                10 - San Antonio Spurs

                                9 - Denver Nuggets

With the Denver Nuggets slotted into the 9th pick, but entering the lottery with the 8th best odds, that means the New York Knicks have catapulted into the top-4 of the 2022 NBA Draft.

                                8 - Charlotte Hornets

The Knicks own the Charlotte Hornets’ pick but with it heavily protected, it will not convey this season. The protection on the Charlotte pick for 2022 was 1-16.

                                7 - Washington Wizards

If any team needed to move up in the draft it was the Wizards…and instead they dropped two spots. This means that the Toronto Raptors, with the 6th best odds, are now into the top-4.

                                6 - Detroit Pistons

The Thunder would have received this pick had the Pistons fallen out of the lottery, but that is not the case. Regardless, the Pistons have fallen from 4th pick to 6th and have to be upset with this result.

                                5 - Orlando Magic

Like the two teams prior, the Magic feel the disappointment of falling two spots when they are a franchise desperate for a franchise player.

As the Draft Lottery show returns from commercial, the panel of experts and analysts discuss what landing a top-2 pick would mean for the four teams that will grace the top of the draft. The Thunder and the Rockets were discussed above and would immediately give them a boost in their rebuild.

For the New York Knicks, they have gone year after year without being able to find a franchise cornerstone. Whether it was horrible draft luck or the inability to lure a big name in free agency, the Knicks are desperate for that true alpha male to lead the Knicks back to credibility in the basketball world.

The Raptors, a much more successful franchise as of late than the other three in this boat, are seemingly always aggressive and willing to make the moves to win immediately. The prime example of that is the deal for Kawhi Leonard that ultimately netted them a championship. Then, just last year with the 4th overall pick, they swung for the fences on Scottie Barnes and looked like geniuses. What would they do with a top-2 pick this year?

For the final results, we go back to Mark Tatum for the thrilling conclusion of this lottery process!

                                …the Toronto Raptors!

Moving along, the 3rd pick of the draft will be headed to…

                                …the Houston Rockets!

The 2nd pick of the 2022 NBA Draft belongs to…

                                …the New York Knicks!

And that means the #1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft goes to the Oklahoma City Thunder!

For the first time in the franchise’s history, the Thunder have “earned” the first overall pick in the draft! With extensive looks at both Chet Holmgren and Paolo Banchero, the internal debate begins on who they should take at the top of the draft in just a few days. For the New York Knicks, they just need to sit back and take whichever is left over without hesitation.
