UNC Greensboro (1-1) vs. Texas-Pan American (1-1)
UTPA Fieldhouse
Edinburg, TX
November 16th, 2007
The UNC Greensboro Spartans (1-1) secured their first win of the season, defeating the Texas-Pan American Broncs 78-74 in an overtime thriller tonight. This victory marked the first career win for UNCG head coach Lee Williamson.
The Spartans overcame a 6-point deficit at halftime before outscoring the Broncs 37-31 in the second half to force overtime. The Spartans led by 3 points in the closing seconds of regulation after UNCG's Darrius Sellers missed the front end of a one-and-one, but UT-Pan American's DeShaun Clemons nailed a three-pointer to tie the game. UNCG played well in the overtime period, though, and grabbed an early lead and held on to win by 4 points.
Landon Clement led the Spartans with 17 points, while Kendall Toney added 16 points, and Kyle Hines contributed a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Spartans shot 30-69 (43%) from the field, including 10-29 (35%) from beyond the arc.
Ije Greenleaf and DeShaun Clemons each scored 17 points for the Broncs (1-1), with Shannon Howell grabbing 13 rebounds. Texas-Pan American struggled from the field, shooting just 39% (29-74).
In his postgame remarks, UNC Greensboro head coach Lee Williamson said, "I'm incredibly proud of how our guys fought back in the second half and overtime. This win means a lot to our program and to our season going forward, and it's a testament to the hard work our players and coaching staff have put in."
The win improved UNCG's record to 1-1, while Texas-Pan American fell to the same mark. UNCG will face Missouri State tomorrow night.
