Unblocked edge defender on jet sweeps

Hello all!

I’m trying to crowdsource this issue to see if there’s a remedy for what I’m seeing.

Whenever I run a jet sweep, the edge defender that my TE should block comes in untouched and my TE climbs to target a S or CB.

I’ve tried everything from sliding to and away from that guy, IDing the mike, manually selecting to ID that edge player, manually selecting to double that edge player, and I’m not finding any solutions to what looks like a simple blocking logic issue.

Jet touch passes are fine; they’re blocked correctly, but the jet sweep seems a non-starter for me.

Is this a common issue, and has anyone found a solution for it?

Does this happen with all of your TEs or just one of them (I presume your starter)?

Just wondering if maybe he's hyper aggressive at going for those downfield blocks....

It happens with every TE, and my starter and backups are blocking specialists.

I am playing on AM, so I’m not sure if this is a level-related issue or if it’s a general gameplay/logic issue.

I try this play vs. every conceivable front, including fronts where we obviously have a leverage advantage and fronts where we don’t, and it’s the same result every time.

What’s weird is that the last time I ran an offense that used jet sweeps liberally was Madden 22, and they worked as I’d expect, which is to say not all the time, but they didn’t have the same thing go wrong every single time.

My hunch from the eye test is that there’s a targeting logic error of the sort they fix in updates to combat meta blitzes—this guy is just not seeing the guy right in front of his face as a threat to the play when the T is obviously covered and has to account for another threat.

That’s why I tried to use some direct commands to double or otherwise identify the unblocked edge guy to the play side, but no dice.

I'm having the same issue on some jet sweep passes and runs where the TE just straight up doesn't block the man right in front of me and the play gets blown up. Would love to see any insight that gets posted in this!

I’m pretty sure this is maddens version of “balance”.

This is how they stop people from calling it every play.

I've yet to figure this play out while about 50% of the time its a 3 yard loss. I've ran it a few times and its a easy 12 yard gain. I'll try it a few times and see if I can figure it out.

The passes are more successful for me. Last season I had my 99 speed rookie in the slot so he got a bunch of those. But the running sweeps for other players like my tight ends or other receivers were usually a bust. I did factor in the balance of being good at something but worse at another but still wish I coulda just popped a nice one once in awhile lol

Ok so here's the thing. Jets are never just called in the huddle and that's the play you run. It's a pre-snap read, so you MUST have it paired with fake jet zone in your audibles. So when I call this I'm either running jet or fake jet. I won't know till I get to the LOS. If I see there's an overhang defender I'm running the fake jet zone. If there's just defender on the edge I'll run the jet. Here's another thing, he's not blocked by design. The jet man's job is to out run him to the sideline FLAT and then turn up field.

Yup, this is it. Every year, some plays just don't work. Don't use them.

Someone mentioned it above but most just sweeps are designed to leave the edge defender unblocked. He’s pretty much the person you have to outrun or make miss. Madden just does a terrible job of translating real life stuff to the game.

OK, I learned some stuff schematically here, so thank y’all.

I’ll not use these when overhang defenders are present.

What was throwing me was that the same play vs. the very same formations worked in past Maddens and is just not working this year, so I assumed it was a new logic error, but I think it’s a mix of scheme stuff and them maybe making some tuning to TE blocking logic.

The play does work a lot better with no overhang defender in place, so again, thanks!

Using the jet pass (HB FK) plus identifying the Mike is more effective imo
