    vs.
UNC Greensboro (22-8) vs. Wofford (11-18)
    Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium
    Spartanburg, SC
    March 1st, 2014

Matas Frye scored 23 points and added 6 rebounds and 3 blocks to lead Wofford to a big 75-66 upset win over UNC Greensboro in both teams' season finales.

Nate Allison paced the Wofford offense with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists and Tyrone Kirkland added a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double. Shannon Falls also tallied 10 points and 4 boards from off the bench.

UNC Greensboro (22-8, 17-3 Southern Conference) led 38-33 at halftime, but the Spartans struggled to hit their shots late. The two teams were tied at 61-61 in the closing minutes, but Wofford (11-18, 7-13) went on a 14-5 run to close out the game.

"On one hand, this game doesn't affect our seeding going into the conference tournament," said UNC Greensboro head coach Lee Williamson, "but this certainly isn't the kind of momentum we wanted to kick off March. We have some soul searching to do going into the conference tournament."

Wofford shot an even 50 percent from the field and dominated the boards, outrebounding UNCG 39-26.

Damian Konare led the Spartans in scoring from off the bench with 13 points. The junior guard also tallied 4 steals. Mathew Van Weerdhuizen scored 12 points, but the junior guard struggled with his shot, connecting on just 3 of his 13 field goal attempts. Earnest Abdur-Rahim bounced back from his 0-point game against Chattanooga with 10 points tonight.

Next up for both teams will be the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament.

It's time for UNCG to finally break through and make the Big Dance. Let's make it happen! If you make the tournament and get some decent mid-major job offers this offseason, would you look at moving teams or are you planning to stick it out at UNCG for the long haul?

Iโ€™m undecided. I think if a really top tier mid-major comes calling, I may leave, but Iโ€™ve got a good situation here, so it would have to be an attractive offer. In a way, Iโ€™d like to see if I could build UNCG into something akin to real-life Gonzaga, but the lack of recruiting points makes it hard to recruit with the big boys, so I may top out on the talent I can get at some point.

UNC Greensboro (23-8) came out on top tonight in a rematch of the regular season finale against Wofford (12-19), this time avenging the Terriers' season finale upset with a convincing 75-58 win to advance to the conference tournament semifinals tomorrow.

The Spartans led by 6 points at halftime and pulled away in the second half, leading by double-digits for most of the final period.

Mathew Van Weerdhuizen scored a game-high 18 points for UNC Greensboro. The junior guard also hauled down 5 rebounds. Edwin Starks totaled a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double while Quincy Dunnington came up one rebound short of a double-double, tallying 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Eugene Grant scored 14 points for Wofford while Nate Allison paced the Terriers' offense with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists.

UNC Greensboro will face Furman in the Southern Conference Tournament Semifinals tomorrow night.

                    Southern Conference Tournament Semifinals

Martynas Montrimas scored 21 points and added 5 rebounds to lead UNC Greensboro (24-8) to a 71-59 win tonight over Furman (17-13) in the Southern Conference Tournament Semifinals.

Edwin Starks also had a great outing for UNCG with 16 points and 10 rebounds, his second straight double-double.

The Spartans got off to a quick start tonight and never led by less than 10 points after the first five minutes of the game, though Furman clawed back to make it closer in the second half.

Cortez Johnston scored 17 points for Furman. Mikel Boggan, who has been a thorn in UNCG's side in past matchups, was held to 12 points tonight, connecting on just 4 of his 19 shot attempts tonight, including just 2-for-10 from three-point range.

The Spartans will face No. 2-seeded Georgia Southern tomorrow night. The Eagles beat No. 3-seeded Charleston in their semifinal matchup 68-64. The Spartans, who lost in last year's Southern Conference Tournament Final, swept Georgia Southern this season, but it took overtime to come away with the win in their first game back on January 25th. Georgia Southern comes into tomorrow night's game having won an impressive eight consecutive games, however; their last loss was a lopsided 98-63 result against UNCG back on February 8th.

                        Southern Conference Tournament Championship Game

Mathew Van Weerdhuizen's three-pointer clanged off the back of the rim as time expired tonight and Georgia Southern (22-10) pulled off the upset over top-seeded UNC Greensboro, defeating the Spartans (24-9) for their ninth-straight win and the Southern Conference Tournament Title and an NCAA berth, 75-72.

Daon Dickey scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds for the Eagles. Gyno Fitzgerald scored 10 points and Darrio Vega tallied 16 points and 4 rebounds.

Vega's greatest contributions came on the defensive end, though, where the 6'11" senior locked down UNCG's standout center Edwin Starks. Starks totaled just 4 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks, connecting on just 1 of his 5 shots from the field.

Starks' counterparts in the backcourt played better, though. Quincy Dunnington totaled a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double and Hatila Verdejo came off the bench to score 10 points. The Spartans got their best contribution from Earnest Abdur-Rahim, though. The senior, who has had a largely disappointing career and hasn't shot greater than 40 percent for a season since his freshman campaign, tore up the scoreboard today with 20 points, just one point shy of his career-high of 21.

Still, it wasn't enough. For the second straight year, UNC Greensboro will come up just one game short of heading to the NCAA Tournament.

"Last year, to some extent we were just happy to be here and to have a chance to play into March, even if it was the NIT," said UNC Greensboro head coach Lee Williamson. "But this one hurts. We dominated this conference for the most part all season and were head and shoulders better than the rest. But we didn't play like it tonight.

"All credit goes to Georgia Southern. They've won nine straight now and maybe they are just the better team at this point of the season. They're definitely on an impressive run."

Georgia Southern will advance to the NCAA Tournament, where they are currently projected as a No. 14 seed. UNC Greensboro, meanwhile, will have to settle for the NIT for the second straight year.

"It may not be what we wanted," said Williamson, referring to the NIT, "but we're going to give it our all when we're in it."
