Coaching Legacy of Lee Williamson (CH 2K8)

Greensboro, NC - The UNC Greensboro Spartans announced the hire of Lee Williamson as head coach of their basketball team for the 2007-2008 season. Williamson replaces Mike Dement, who unexpectedly stepped down after guiding the Spartans to a 30-33 record during his first two seasons as head coach, including a 16-14 record last season.

Williamson is both a native of Greensboro, NC and the Spartans are also his alma mater. The 26-year old has worked his way up the coaching ranks as an assistant after walking on to the UNCG basketball team during his time at UNC Greensboro. Williamson rarely saw the floor, but he was a tremendous asset for the Spartans during practices and scrimmages.

Williamson will take over a team that has some promising talent and is projected to finish in the top half of the Southern Conference next season. Davidson is the overwhelming favorite, but if the Wildcats, led by Stephen Curry, falter, it could open the gates for someone else, UNCG among those leading the charge.

Williamson coaches a tough brand of basketball which emphasizes tough man-to-man defense and spacing the floor offensively.

"I'm honored to accept this position as head men's basketball coach at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro," said Williamson in his introductory press conference earlier this afternoon. "It's exciting to be able to coach at my alma mater and I really look forward to leading these guys going forward. This team has the talent to make some noise, and I look forward to getting to work in practice and seeing what we have to work with."

    ---

Hello, everyone! I am starting this legacy up as a complement to my current coaching legacy. I just decided to fire up this legacy alongside it because, though I enjoy playing that legacy, as well, I also enjoy the challenge of building a team up. This will allow me to fulfill that itch while still continuing my 15-years-and-running legacy.

UNCG isn't normally one of the teams you can pick for a career legacy, but I was able to manipulate the starting lineups in order to lower their overall rating enough to pick for career legacy. I wanted to pick UNCG because they are my real-life alma mater. As such, this team is better than most teams that people pick to start a career legacy, so though this team is still quite bad, I should be fairly competitive within conference play, where my team is rated pretty middle of the road.

All games will be played. I never simulate games.

In their season opener, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-0) held off a spirited UNC Greensboro Spartans (0-1) team to secure a 78-63 victory in both teams' season-openers. The game marked the head coaching debut of UNCG's Lee Williamson, who saw his team outperform expectations as the Spartans kept the game within reach throughout, only falling by 15 points to the 25th-ranked team in the land.

Georgia Tech was led by Roshaun Winter, who scored 19 points, while Dion Challed contributed 13 points. Myron Chandler nearly nabbed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. UNC Greensboro's Kevin Oleksiak topped the Spartans' scoring charts with 18 points, followed by Kyle Hines and Mikko Koivisto, who each contributed 14 points.

The Yellow Jackets started strong, building a 43-27 lead by halftime. However, the Spartans fought back in the second half, outscoring Georgia Tech 36-35, but it wasn't enough to overcome the first-half deficit as they never were able to cut the lead to single digits.

UNCG head coach Lee Williamson praised his team's efforts in his first game at the helm, saying, "Our guys played with heart and determination. We kept the game closer than many expected, and I'm proud of their performance. We'll take the lessons from this game and continue to improve throughout the season. All in all, for a season-opener against a very good team, I think we have plenty of reason to be pleased."

The Spartans have six days off before they travel to the Midwest next week for back-to-back games at UT-Pan American and Missouri State next Friday and Saturday.

I forgot to note that I do not have correctly named rosters for this as 2K Share appears to be a thing of the past. I did change my team's roster to utilize real names, though. Somewhat unfortunate, but at least this is a closed legacy and I don't really know who was actually on the SoCon teams circa 2007-2008, anyways, so it won't hurt the immersion too much.

I also won't provide as frequent "Around the NCAA" updates as with my WVU legacy as I won't be ranked for a long time (if ever) and it helps to cut down on the amount of time it takes to do updates.

The UNC Greensboro Spartans (1-1) secured their first win of the season, defeating the Texas-Pan American Broncs 78-74 in an overtime thriller tonight. This victory marked the first career win for UNCG head coach Lee Williamson.

The Spartans overcame a 6-point deficit at halftime before outscoring the Broncs 37-31 in the second half to force overtime. The Spartans led by 3 points in the closing seconds of regulation after UNCG's Darrius Sellers missed the front end of a one-and-one, but UT-Pan American's DeShaun Clemons nailed a three-pointer to tie the game. UNCG played well in the overtime period, though, and grabbed an early lead and held on to win by 4 points.

Landon Clement led the Spartans with 17 points, while Kendall Toney added 16 points, and Kyle Hines contributed a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Spartans shot 30-69 (43%) from the field, including 10-29 (35%) from beyond the arc.

Ije Greenleaf and DeShaun Clemons each scored 17 points for the Broncs (1-1), with Shannon Howell grabbing 13 rebounds. Texas-Pan American struggled from the field, shooting just 39% (29-74).

In his postgame remarks, UNC Greensboro head coach Lee Williamson said, "I'm incredibly proud of how our guys fought back in the second half and overtime. This win means a lot to our program and to our season going forward, and it's a testament to the hard work our players and coaching staff have put in."

The win improved UNCG's record to 1-1, while Texas-Pan American fell to the same mark. UNCG will face Missouri State tomorrow night.

The Missouri State Bears (2-0) dominated the UNC Greensboro Spartans (1-2) in a lopsided 87-64 victory tonight in Springfield, MO. The Bears' control over the game was evident, as they led by as many as 34 points before the Spartans managed to close the gap to 23 points at the final buzzer.

Missouri State's dominance allowed them to play numerous backups in the second half, giving their starters a much-needed rest. In the first half, the Bears outscored the Spartans 49-29, and maintained their lead throughout the second half.

The Bears were led by Dominick Ames, who scored 17 points on 8-14 shooting in just 18 minutes, while Rickey Perez contributed 13 points, going 9-9 from the free-throw line. Off the bench, Fernandez Mance added 12 points on 5-7 shooting, including 2-4 from beyond the arc, and Jeffrey Hart totaled 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals.

For the Spartans, Kyle Hines was the top scorer with 20 points, and Kendall Toney added 15 points, 4 shots from three-point range. Despite their efforts, the Spartans struggled to keep up with the Bears throughout the game.

Missouri State's commanding performance showcased their depth and the potential of their bench players. With a mix of solid offense and strong defense, the Bears never let the game get close and secured their second win of the season, improving to a 2-0 record, while the Spartans fell to 1-2.

UNCG has a week off before they host South Carolina Upstate next Saturday in their home opener.

The UNC Greensboro Spartans rallied in the second half to defeat the South Carolina Upstate Spartans tonight, 75-64.

South Carolina Upstate held a 38-31 lead at halftime, but UNC Greensboro mounted a comeback, outscoring their opponents 44-26 in the second half. The home team's offense was led by Kendall Toney and Kevin Oleksiak, both contributing 17 points each. Dwayne Johnson added 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, while Darrius Sellers also pulled down 9 boards, a career-high for the senior point guard.

On the other side, South Carolina Upstate's Arvydas Moore led all scorers with 18 points. Neil Alleyne contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds, while Britton Munns tallied 9 points and 10 assists, falling just a point short of a coveted double-double.

UNC Greensboro's bench was crucial in the victory, as Landon Clement came off the bench to score 11 points, going 4-for-10 from the field and 3-for-8 from beyond the arc. It was a welcome performance from Clement, who shot just 25% from the floor through the first three games of the season.

The win improved UNC Greensboro's record to 2-2, while South Carolina Upstate stayed winless at 0-5. The Spartans have a week off before hosting Kent State next weekend.

The UNC Greensboro Spartans (3-2) defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes with a 75-63 victory tonight at home in Greensboro. The Spartans' Kyle Hines led the team with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, while also contributing 2 steals and 3 blocks. Kendall Toney added 17 points, going 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Kevin Oleksiak got to the free throw line 10 times and scored 13 points, and Michael Mitchell came off the bench to pour in 12 points and five rebounds in just 11 minutes of action.

The Golden Flashes had a standout performance from Robert McCalebb, who scored 15 points, dished out 5 assists, and had 3 steals. Jacob Toppert also contributed 12 points and 5 rebounds for Kent State, and Stanley Bremer scored 10 points.

UNC Greensboro started strong with a 42-28 lead at halftime. UNCG led by as many as 20 points in the second half as they maintained a double-digit lead throughout.

Spartans' head coach Lee Williamson commented on the team's progress, saying, "Getting above .500 is an important milestone for us. It shows our growth and dedication as a team, and we plan to keep pushing forward and improving as the season goes on. Winning both games of this homestand is huge for us, as well."

The Spartans won both games of this homestand against South Carolina Upstate and Kent State, although it's notable the two teams have a combined record of 2-13. UNCG will have a step up in competition in two days when they face an ACC opponent on the road when they face the Virginia Tech Hokies.

The Virginia Tech Hokies (4-3) narrowly edged out the UNC Greensboro Spartans (3-3) tonight, 72-67. Despite being the underdogs, the Spartans kept the game closer than expected, even leading at halftime, 36-34. Kyle Hines led the Spartans with an impressive performance, scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Mikko Koivisto contributed 11 points off the bench, with three 3-pointers.

For the Hokies, Kalu Parker was the top scorer with 19 points, supported by Leslie Cox and Jeffrey Bain, who scored 15 and 14 points, respectively. Bain also grabbed 8 rebounds. Alex Konare contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds, while Cary Cobb added 4 points and 5 rebounds.

The Hokies trained by as many as 10 points in the first half, but cut the Spartans' lead to just 2 points at halftime. They showed more strength in the second half, though, and were able to pull ahead late and hit enough shots down the stretch to stave off UNCG's hopes of retaking the lead late.

With the win, the Hokies improve their record above .500 to 4-3. UNCG, on the other hand, falls to .500 with a 3-3 record.

Next up for the Spartans is a road game at Wofford in an early season in-conference tilt against the Terriers. It will be both teams' conference-opener.

Tough loss to Tech! Hines is playing really good. Always great to see you posting, in here or in your legendary Frizzell story.

Thanks, man! Yeah, I just win so much at this point in my other legacy that I wanted to shake things up a bit to have a challenge. Definitely will continue posting my other legacy, as well! I’m having a lot of fun playing CH 2K8 lately!
