Before we begin, I have a confession to make: I am not a fan of Monster Jam. It's not that I couldn't be, actually quite the opposite. As an old-school lover of all things WCW, NASCAR and PBR (the sport not the beer), I always figured that Monster Jam would eventually fall into my list of routine viewing habits, I just never got around to watching or going to an event.

But after playing Monster Jam: CRUSH IT!, I may need some more PBR (the beer not the sport).

There I was, smack-dab in the middle of the Maplefield town square at midnight, searching for that one elusive nugget of gold. By studying the map I’d already deduced that my prize was resting on top of a lawyer’s office, but I had no idea how to access the roof as climbing nearby trash cans and awnings proved utterly fruitless. Finally I managed to reach the top of the building by scurrying up a nearby flagpole and making a desperate leap of faith, thereby securing my precious golden quarry. Satisfied ... Read More

August is here, ushering in the dawn of another exciting season of English football. You've got your copy of FIFA or PES, know a thing or two about the Barclays Premier League, understand the concept of promotion/relegation. Or maybe you're a complete newcomer to the sport. Despite the wealth of knowledge we're given about the BPL these days, there's still much about the English football system that is totally foreign (no pun intended) to the average American sports fan. Where are the playoffs? ... Read More

2014 represented a landmark year for Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer. After years of coming "this close" on last-gen consoles, PES 2015 marked a long overdue return to glory for the historic franchise. Meanwhile, EA's FIFA 15 continued its steady ascent as one of the premier titles in sports gaming with the addition of EPL presentation elements and the refinement of many key features. So what could these two football juggernauts learn from one another in order to improve their respective series moving ... Read More

Discounting a brief obsession with FIFA 98: Road to the World Cup, my first real FIFA experience was with EA's stellar run of football titles on last-gen. From FIFA 08 onward, every yearly iteration represented a quantum leap in both quantity and quality. Over time, FIFA became the one sports title I could not do without, an annual pre-order on instinct.

One of my favorite (and perhaps the most underutilized) features of last-gen FIFA was the brilliant Creation Centre, which allowed ... Read More

In the three years since I've been playing the series regularly, Sony's MLB The Show has skyrocketed on my list of annual sports titles from lukewarm expectation to rabid enthusiasm. Not only has it managed to rekindle my interest in baseball video games, but more surprisingly, in the sport itself. The Show does so many things right that it would be pointless to list them all here. So how it possible to substantially improve the series moving forward? Well, here's a thought or two on the matter… ... Read More

As a huge fan of Ultimate Team and other card-collecting sports game modes, I see the promise in NBA2K's MyTeam. The opportunity to create an awesome line-up of legendary and current marquee players -- combined with the dazzling athleticism and showmanship of the NBA -- gives 2K the potential to create a sports-fantasy scenario that is second to none. But while the potential for greatness is there, there are definitely some areas that are in need of improvement. Here we will focus on how to improve ... Read More

As mentioned in a previous blog, I grew up in Northern California as a San Francisco Giants fan. For the longest time there was nothing better than rooting on my baseball club against their hated foes to the south, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ask anyone who's lived on the best coast and they will tell you that there is no fiercer rivalry in sports, it's a century-old tradition that - like all great sports rivalries - inspires white-hot passion on both sides. Unfortunately it has also been indirectly ... Read More

Now before you get excited, I do not consider baseball to be boring (although I know a few sports fans who do). What I am referring to are the implementations made by SCEA to speed up this year's version of The Show, including the shortening of cutscenes and the somewhat-debated Quick Counts option. I'm assuming these conventions are catered mainly toward people who lack either the time or the patience to work their way through an entire MLB game.

As I've been following this series, ... Read More

The first time I felt close to baseball was growing up in Northern California and attending my very first Giants game at Candlestick Park. That was decades ago, back when the sport might still be considered "America's Pastime," although it was already getting plenty of competition from the mighty NFL. I remember that particular event being bigger in scope than anything in my life that preceded it: the size of the stadium, the roar of the crowd, the unique blended aroma of hot dogs and popcorn, the ...
