10YF Bills: North NY rebuilding

Coach Mac joins the 10YF Buffalo Bills

After long discussions with multiple teams Coach Mac finally landed in North New York where he will drive the Bills for the second cycle of the growing and stunning 10YF league.

Mac is a former user with Cardinals (with Anquan Boldin as a rookie), Lions (those of Joey Harringthon), Browns from 2007 to 2014 and then he spent the last 3 cycles with Jaguars including the 2017 campaign in 10YF where he led the Jaguars to 2 playoff appearances loosing twice in AFC conference game.

Mac has been subject to a lot of speculation during the off season and had contact with a half dozen of teams before landing across Erie lake.

On joining the Bills

It is the first time that I will play in AFC East. I started watching NFL when Bills had their 4 SBs losses in a row. Like Bills I played and lost 4 SBs, hopefully our union can help us both overcome that. I am very excited to join a team which is eager to go back to the playoff. It is a very popular team in North NY and Ontario.

On the direction taken by Bills organisation

Until regular season opener we do not control. Obviously the decision to trade Watkins and Darby has a huge impact on this franchise.

Unfortunately Bills traded with three teams (Chiefs, Eagles, Rams) under the control of PO calibers users so we know we will get late picks which make these trades even worse 10YF wise.

But it is what it is, we have to move forward. This team in its current shape really need a veteran user to exists in the 10YF and I am very excited about the challenge. There is no better place for me in 10YF.
  • Traded down in 1st round of 2017 NFL draft to pick CB Tre'Davious White and aquired Chiefs 2018 first round pick
  • Traded WR Sammy Watkins (2014 4th overall selection) and 2018 sixth round pick to Rams for CB E.J. Gaines and 2018 second round pick
  • Traded CB Ronald Darby (2015 2nd round selection 50th overall) to Eagles for WR Jordan Matthews and 2018 third round pick
  • Traded LB Reggie Ragland (2016 2nd round selection 41th overall) to Chiefs for 2019 fourth round pick

On AFC East

AFC East was subject to a lot of teasing during the first cycle of 10YF. The new cast is going to be very different. The time of being 4-0 in off season when AFC east is in your schedule is gone.

For the little that i know coach Cigars he will be competitive. Forget last year mess, the Patriots are contender this cycle.

The Dolphins have a good roster and coach Nick was able to give a game to any team last year.

Jets have a newcomer (coach Joeydee) he is a true Jets fan which is always a good sign.

On the schemes

We are figuring out. We need to take advantage of our limited assets and develop our players.

Despite a solid offense we could not run in 2017. We have a tradition of runs between the tackles and the feeling is that this year "framework" is much more friendly for our run style. We should be able to do better. In Jacksonville it was all about having these 3 WRs on the fields. We should have a much more balanced pro style offense with a surprise here and there.

On defense, this team was dominant under Jim Schwartz. But they changed scheme on twice on the past 3 years. I do not see this defense running a heavy zone 43 base.
The discussions are about 34 vs 43 when nowadays NFL teams run Niquel personnel 80% of time. We need to define whether we want a 4 linemen or 3 linemen front and then build from there.

10YF Buffalo Bills opening season recap

It has been a rough season in Buffalo.
  • The offense never clicked and ended at the bottom of the league
  • The defense kept the team in game in most of the games despite a limited talent on that side of the ball
  • Nonetheless Bills stayed in the PO race playing meanningful football until the final week with wins against very succesfull teams: Chiefs, Falcons and Saints
  • A few players development looks promising for the next season: CB White had a solid year for a rookie while WR Mathews finally lost his habit to drop key receptions

Re: 10YF Bills: North NY rebuilding

Bills off season:
“Screwing up twice doesn't make it right” Jimmy Johnson

Like any 10YF team the Bills are waiting... The next few hours will reveal the outcome of the first free agency settlement window and... the Combine results which will have a huge impact on all the draft boards around the league. An opportunity to go through the open issues in North New York.

Youth required in Buffalo

Most of the Bills stars are at the sunset of their career. It is a special draft for the Bills, the team holds 6 picks in the top 81 selections.

It is ovbviously a huge pressure, like most teams we would love to go by talent but that roster has huge needs which will barely be addressed in the Free Agency.

Richie Incognito retirement just made the situation even worse creating a big gap in the interior of the line, Incognito was arguably the best player on offense in 2017 allowing a single sack in 698 snaps. He fought with a back soreness for most of the season and missed 6 games.

"We will need more than one draft and off season to get all that mess sorted, but we definitely expect to have a step in the right direction in the coming few days" commented an assistant.

Genius or idiots ?

Quietly having Bills at the bottom of the league in scoring is a disappointment even with an average cast. The Mike McCoy inspired offense never clicked.
"We implemented a system which has never been used anywhere else. I mean how many time did you see a team selecting Chargers offense as system ? Never, when you are the only one doing something you are either a genius or an idiot, looking at the numbers it is easy to figure out where we stand..." commented Richie Incognito after his retirement...

Multiple auditions have been conducted. Rumors announce that Bills interviewed Patriots assistant offense and QB coach Gery Schupinska while other sources announce the possibility to see Steve Marruki to leave broadcast and return to coaching.

"We should go to something quite different to what we use to play. We want to use concepts and play types we pretty much ignoired in the past. We used to dominate downfield and we had an reading the coverage. But in nowadays 10YF the defenses have the edge and Bills need to adjust to such a reality".

Regardless of the system it will all come down to the QB

Entering a contract year Tyrod Taylor started all 16 games in 2017 and finished with 3,011 yards 17 TD and 19 INT completing 56% of his attempts. Sacks allowed (62) have been the main issue. Even if it has been acknowledged as a league issue, the new system need to favor Tyrod mobility and help him getting more time in the pocket.

Looking at the deal between Rams and Dolphins which sent Tannehil to LA, some advisors suggested that Bills could test the market for QB Peterman.

Peterman has starting caliber arm strength and good mobility, but his main weapon is his release. His release is actually much more natural and faster than Tyrod Taylor one.

"Nathan needs to work his accuracy but man his release is so quick. I think he can play in this league"... could it be in Buffalo ?

Tyrod Taylor throwing motion has been a concern all season long. "When we played Chiefs despite the win he was close to be benched. Chiefs played heavy blitzes and Tyrod was not releasing the ball quickly enough. He got sacked 10 times... 10 times. are you kidding me ? Peterman would have done better but Mac remained committed to his QB to avoid a QB controversy while the team was on a winning streak" commented a non official team source.

At this stage the most probable option is to consider that it is Tyron job to loose while the team develop Peterman and Cardale Jones.
But.... Bills own the 10th pick in the next draft. All scenario assume that both Hayden Parsons and Taylor St Clair would be gone by then, but what if...

At this stage nothing can be ruled out and all options are on the table.

Go Bills

Re: 10YF Bills: North NY rebuilding

Bills add 10 players in a quiet market

">

In a quiet market despite a profusion of cap room a lot of teams have been prudent (the calm before the storm ?) the Buffalo Bills ended the first settlement window of FA with 10 new players in the rosters.

Bills agreed a 5 years 35M contract to land former Browns running back Isaiah Crowell. Crowell played college foiotball for Georgia and Alabama State before joining Cleveland in 2014 as an undrafted free agent. He rushed for 713 yards in 2017 (4.0 avg) and scored 2 TDs.

Buffalo confirmed as well the signature of T.J.McDonald Jr. McDonald, initially drafted by the Rams in the 3rd round of the 2013 NFL draft, joins his third 10YF team after playing for the Miami Dolphins in 2017. The 6'2 217lbs safety is expected to bring a physical presence which was missing within Bills secondary.

After tenure with the Titans and the Colts Brian Schwenke is another starting material veteran to join the Bills. Schwenke played either as G or C in his 5 years career in the league.

The other players signed are:
  • DE Mike Martin (Bills/resigned)
  • LB Mike Hull (Miami Dolphins)
  • S Terrence Brooks (New York Jets)
  • WR Jakeem Grant (Miami Dolphins)
  • TE Daniel Brown (FA/Did not play in 2017)
  • P Shawn Powell (FA/Did not play in 2017)

Re: 10YF Bills: North NY rebuilding

Bills 2017 10YF draft

Bills entered the 10YF draft with 8 picks in total including 6 in the top 82 selection.

1st round pick 10th: CB Imam Marshall, USC

"Bills could not resist and address their most pressing need with their very first pick. Marshall is a day one starter. He's a tremendous athlete. If you draw up a corner, this is the guy. Some have questioned his work ethic and football IQ but he gives to Bills a solid player to start opposite to White." -- Mike Macock

1st round pick 31th (from Chiefs): WR Richie James, Mid Tenn St.

"Quick and explosive. Mac adds speed to a receiver unit that struggled to stretch the field after Sammy Watkins trade. Questions about his technique and consistency. He was more projected as a 3rd round, Bills must really liek what they saw in that kid to take him at the bottom of the first round" -- Mike Macock

2nd round pick 10th: HB Justin Jackson, Northwestern St.

"Jackson brings some excitement to an offense that ranked 28th in scoring last season. He will only get a handful of touches each game, but he brings some big-play ability as an offensive weapon and returner. Bills draft so far reminds me Al Davis glory days" -- Mike Macock

2nd round pick 30th (from Rams): S Will Sutherland, Oklahoma

"Will Sutherland was a 3 years starter with Oklahoma as safety. He's another one that will hit you. He's a real physical football player... Some see him as a potential "moneybacker" in a league looking for solution to defend 11 personnel with base personnel’’ -- Mike Macock

3rd round pick 10th: CB Tomazz Golson, Pittsburgh

"Golson is a highway speed guy. He can run fast. He's a press corner. He's the least interesting defensive back in this entire draft in supporting the run. His above average coverage skils make him able to compete for a nickel or dime corner role" -- Mike Mayock

3rd round pick 17th (from Eagles): OLB Nate McMullen, Toledo

"I like this guy. Six-four, 244. People say he has short arms and bla bla bla... but then he went to the combine and tested extremely well. So you've got an effort motor guy with really good measurables. All I'm telling you is Bills need to affect the pass game and he's going to be one of those guys that can stick his hand in the dirt or stand up depending on what they need." -- Mike Macock

4th round pick 10th: CB Derrick hendrix, Wake Forrest

"Forrest is a developmental cover corner who's an ideal fit in Coach Mac's defense". -- Mike Macock

5th round pick 10th: WR Ashley Bailey, Memphis

Bailey's productive senior season earned him NFL looks and Bills likely saw enough potential as a downfield receiver to take him at this point. He'll need to earn his keep on special teams early" - Daniel Jedemia

Paul Posluszny returns to Buffalo

The 10YF Bills confirmed this morning the signature of Paul Posluszny for the season less than 2 hours after he got released by the Jaguars. A 11 years veteran with above 1,000 career tackles, Posluszny returns to the team which drafted him 34th overall in the 2nd round of the 2007 NFL draft.

"We are blessed to welcome back Paul here in Buffalo. Paul will create a lot of value for us, he has a tremendous leadership and is still one of the best coverage LB in the game. We are very excited for the opportunity to add Paul to our football team" commented CoachMac.
