Box Score: Rockets | Team Comparison | Spurs
Hakeem Outduels Robinson in Return
November 19th, 1998

HOUSTON -- The Rockets have been on a roll, winning three of their last four games. Houston got a big boost in this game, Hakeem Olajuwon would be returning after missing the past six games. The Spurs have had an up and down first month of the season. Rookie Power Forward Time Duncan broke his hand in the first game of the season and won't be back until next month.

Early in the game, it was a defensive standstill. the Spurs went to point guard Avery Johnson early not finding much success. With Duncan out, the Rockets seemed to gameplan to go to Barkley in the post against. Sir Charles was not able to get going, missing several easy shots over Malik Rose.

As the quarter closed the oldest match-up in Texas began. Both Hakeem and David Robinson started to hit some shots. Robinson out muscling Hakeem to get an offensive tip-in, then Hakeem hitting the dream shake on the other end. Both men were doing it on the defensive end as well, each picking up two blocks.

In the second quarter, the addition of Darrell Armstrong showed it's promise. Armstrong was able to get hot against the Spurs bench, nobody could keep up with his speed off the dribble. Stanley Roberts for the Rockets also shined in this quarter, preventing the Spurs from getting any easy looks inside.

The Spurs lack of offense outside of David Robinson was a huge problem throughout the game. Avery Johnson shot a pitiful 4/15 throughout the game. Players like Steve Kerr were able to cause a bit of damage but nobody could get a consistent bucket.

Scottie Pippen struggled to find his spots in this one. Despite the lack of shot attempts, Pippen had the ball his usual amount this game. Sean Elliot just played fantastic defense, preventing Scottie from getting going. Elliot reduced Pippen to a spot-up shooter. The only shots Pippen seemed to be able to hit were the few times he was left open for three.

The Rockets were incredibly hot this game from deep, however, going 6/8 from downtown. Cuttino Mobley was also able to find some wide-open shots from deep.

The Spurs came into the fourth down eleven, David Robinson wouldn't let it stay that way, however. Robinson demanded the ball the entire quarter, scoring 11 of his 27 points. When he wasn't making shots Robinson was going to the line. As the game clock ticked down Hakeem started to trade post shots with Robinson. Hitting the Spurs big man with a pump fake then driving past him to dunk in the lane.

Ultimately the Spurs just didn't have the offensive firepower to fully come back getting close a few times but never within five. The Rockets were able to seal the deal after Barkley hit a baseline jumper to go up nine with a minute left.

The Hakeem/Robinson duel was in full effect. Great job by Pippen and the others to step up and outplay San Antonio's role players.

Curious about your game settings, if you don't mind sharing?

Oh, those 1-of-1 duels from back in the day were amazing. Great victory.

Putting together a nice stretch now, good to get some health back too. Crazy to think 6/8 from 3 was a normal stay in the 90s. You think this group is capable of winning a title?

I'm currently playing on superstar, but I turned down the speed to 45. Maybe it's because I'm used to newer 2ks but it felt like the players were moving a bit too fast.

Yeah you don't get those 1v1 center duels in the NBA often anymore. Was pretty fun to watch Hakeem and David go tic for tac in the fourth.

I think we have a shot if things play our way. In the west the Lakers will be a force to reckon with once they get healthy, the Jazz still have their duo and the Kings look really good. Out East Miami and Indiana have been dominate with the Knicks a distant third.

Rodman Signs with Lakers
November 27th, 1998

LOS ANGELES -- Dennis Rodman had been sitting in the free agency pool looking for a shot the past few months. There was some rumors he could wind up in a number of places but the Lakers took a shot on the 37 year old.

It was reported that many close to Rodman feared he wouldn't get another chance in the NBA due to his reputation as a poor lockerroom fit and a headache for coaches. Rodman's agent, Steve Chasman, would neither confirm nor deny the report.

Rodman has been the NBA's leading rebounder each of the last seven seasons, he signed a one-year contract with LA. John Black, a Lakers spokesman, had said yesterday afternoon that the team hoped to have Rodman signed to a contract by the end of the night. Black also said Rodman would practice with several members of the team today, and be available to the news media afterward.

The Laker's promising team has been derailed by an injury to Kobe Bryant which has left him on the sidelines for most of the season. Rodman's presence won't make up for Kobe but he should be able to bring rebounding and toughness to a Lakers team looking to scrape out some wins with their young star gone.

Refresh my memory, is Phil the coach in LA at this point? If so I don’t hate it. You’ve got a coach who knows to deal with him and a system Rodman knows. Plus Kobe and MJ have similar personalities. Don’t mind it as a rebounder off the bench for the Lakers.

Right now the Lakers coach is Kurt Rambis, Phil came a year later.

In real life Rodman went to the Lakers this season but he only lasted 20ish games before he wore his welcome
