#10- John Fletcher University of Arizona CB Pittsburgh Steelers Round 1 Pick 23
A lot of scouts were unsure of what to think of the 5-11 CB from Plano, Texas, due to questions about his toughness and his zone reading ability, but after giving up nearly 223 yards a game last season (4th worst) the Steelers couldn't afford to pass up on this guy. Jon has been inactive on the roster after badly injuring his head in week 2 in his first NFL tackle. It's still easy to question his toughness, but Pittsburgh defensive coordinator Toby Fitzmaurice swears that Fletcher is the future face of the defense.
#9- Doug Rivers Louisville NT Miami Dolphins Round 1 Pick 7
Rivers was known as a monster pass rusher in college, but scouts believe that this guy will end up being one of the best run-stopping tackles in the NFL after he is done learning Miami's new 3-4 D. Miami certainly needed help against the run after giving up the 4th most rushing yards last season and Rivers was immediately thrust into fray starting the first six games before straining a ligament in his foot.
#8- Gilbert Rogero Iowa State QB Baltimore Ravens Round 1 Pick 3
Rogero went from being a Hawk(eye) to becoming a Raven in a somewhat surprising move by Baltimore. Joel Beyer, who is known as a top QB prospect and was the Raven's 4th round selection in the allocation draft, started for Baltimore in 2010. Unfortunately his 11 TD and 13 INT season failed to impress very many likely leading to Rogero's selection. Gilbert was known in Iowa for his impeccable timing and pinpoint accuracy. Scouts considered him one of the safest picks of the draft and most agree that by the time he retires he will be known as one of the best longball passer in the NFL.
#7- Tito Parrish Colorado WR Chicago Bears Round 1 Pick 15
Tito came into the draft scouted as the second best wide receiver. Many scouts are scratching their heads as they wonder how he fell all the way down to 15, but the Bears seem very, very glad he did. Tito is a big play receiver period. If you don't put your best cornerback on him and bring safety help over the top HE WILL BURN YOU. Through five games Tito has 23 catches for 270 yards and 2 touchdowns. Already some of the faults that made many teams shy away from him are being seen. He has dropped 4 balls (worst among rookies) and seems to have a great deal of difficulty adjusting to the ball. No one is going to argue that he hasn't been impressive, but making a reception on only 48% of his targets is not.
#6- Harvey Brennan RB Eastern Tennessee State Tennessee Titans Round 1 Pick 19
Even though Brennan dominated his conference in college, many team thought that he would be a sure bust after having less than stellar games against top opponents. The Tennessee Titans listened to their fans however and took the guy from their own backyard. Brennan is very fast and surprisingly powerful with exceptional speed to the outside. One of his biggest strengths is recognizing the hole and many scouts now think that the Titans provide him the perfect situation to flourish... notice how they only mention this now after his 117 yard performance against the Saints in week two.
#5- Jon Jackson Stanford Indianapolis Colts Round 1 Pick 9
Jackson was hailed as the greatest prospect in the draft by far, but he fell out of the top 5 as questions about his ability to diagnosis the play were called to the forefront. Already however, Jackson has 2 interceptions and 20 tackles helping propel the Colts passing defense as one of the best in the league.
#4 Brett Barnes RB Washington San Diego Chargers Round 1 Pick 11
Widely considered the best HB in the draft, Barnes fell a bit due to his short stature (5-10 with clogs) and due to his lack of elusiveness. Don't let the small packaging confuse you though, Barnes is an old school back that can pound the ball down the defenses throat. His not going to juke or spin around the defense, but he will wait for holes to develop and put as good of a hit on anyone who tries to tackle him and they put on him. He was considered one of the most developed offensive players in the draft, which was good news to the Chargers as the top halfback on their roster only managed to average 3.75 yards on 173 carries the previous season. Barnes has received immediate playing time running for 109 yards and a touchdown last week after struggling a bit earlier in the season (no rushing TDs and no 90+ yard games in 4 previous starts).
#3- Donnell Bensen WR Syracuse Oakland Raiders Round 1 Pick 1
After breaking record after record at Syracuse Bensen came into the draft projected as a top 5 player with probably the best upside of any player in the draft. After finishing as the worst passing team in terms of yardage, the decision for the Raiders was easy, get Bensen. Paired with Donnell, Raiders QB Walt Ingram increased his passer rating over 25 points and after six games he is only 1 touchdown away from tying his sum from the previous season. Bensen leads the team with receiving yards, touchdowns. and catches with is alarming considering how much room he has to grow.
#2- Ralph Roller DE Purdue Baltimore Ravens Round 1 Pick 14
The hyperactive Ravens had three first round selections after trading the Bills and the Chargers for their picks. With the Chargers first round pick, the Ravens took Roller off the board. He was known as the best defensive end in the draft after dominating at Purdue. His pass rush strength is phenomenal and his motor his ridiculous. All he needs to work on is the technical aspect of his position. He struggles with stopping the run, diagnosing the play, and using finesse moves when rushing the passer, but most scouts agree that he will learn these skill easily given enough time to develop.
#1- Dan McKinnis NT Cincinnati New Jersey Jets Round 1 Pick 2
After a dismal 2-13-1 record in 2010, the Jets needed to find someway to win in 2011. The found that in Dan McKinnis. Dan is, simply put, a monster on the line. In the 3-4 defense, he probably won't get very many sacks, but if put in the right system he can be a 282 pound nightmare for the QB. What really sets him apart however, is his run stopping ability. He has an almost superhuman ability to sense where the play is going and after foiling any attempt at blocking him, he can LAY OUT the runningback. Dan currently is tied for second in the league for forced fumbles.
