The New Jersey Devils today have allowed 16 players who were part of the organization last year to test the waters of free agency, allowing the rebuild to continue. Among those players who did not have their contracts renewed include wingers Marty Havlat and Michael Ryder, defensemen Peter Harrold and Mark Fraser, and veteran centerman Scott Gomez.

As nearly every hockey fan expected - Connor McDavid was the first player selected in this year's NHL Entry draft. While it is unclear at this time if he will sign immediately with the Sabres or remain for at least another year in Erie, one thing is certain - the Sabres just got a whole lot scarier a couple years down the road.

Sabres win "McDavid Sweepstakes", Devils come in second

The Buffalo Sabres have been named victors in the "Connor McDavid Sweepstakes" after winning the NHL Entry Draft Lottery. The New Jersey Devils came in second place, while the Arizona Coyotes came in third.

While Buffalo is seen as almost a for sure lock on taking Connor McDavid first overall, the Devils rumor mill has been churning that the 2nd overall pick may be up for grabs in a trade, as the Devils are keen to add more picks to bolster the somewhat thin prospect pool.

Despite their 7-2 win over the Florida Panthers in their final regular season game of the 2014-2015 NHL season, the New Jersey Devils have finished with the second worst record in the league, amassing only 72 points to the Presidents' Trophy winning Pittsburgh Penguins' 117. Buffalo was the only team to obtain fewer points this season than the Devils at 61.
