Will Playoffs Really Help College Football?

There are 35 bowls in today's NCAA. That is 70 teams, or 58% of all of the NCAA that get a postseason per year. In professional sports, however, less teams get a postseason. In the NFL, it's 37.5%. In the NBA, it's 53%. In MLB, it's 27%. That tells you that each year, 70 teams' rosters will have big game experience, as every bowl game is a big game for their respective school. Giving these players big game experience in college will likely tone down the pressure of big games at the professional level at least a tiny bit.

Each bowl game provides payout, money that both teams get*. Let's just say there was a 12-team playoff (to make the college playoffs like the pro playoffs) that involved all conference winners and an at-large bid. Firstly, that would reduce the % of teams that get a postseason from 58% to 10% - a 48% drop off. Secondly, the money would fly around everywhere. The small conferences would get money they've never had before. The large conferences could get smaller amounts of money.

I didn't provide a ton of information, because the greater question is for you - would playoffs really help college football? Many schools that are .500 teams wouldn't get as big of an opportunity to play big games. The big schools would only get bigger, and juggernauts would be formed.

*I am not sure if both teams get payout from bowl games.
