Been that way since at least the BCS days. In the modern format we hardly ever even get 1 good game out of the 3 each year. The semi-final games are always terrible and the championship game is hardly close most of the time.

It will be cool if this means playoff games that aren't neutral site, but even then that will lose its luster when each game is a snoozer.

Re: College Football Off Topic

The question is whether this, combined with NIL stuff, will spread out recruiting so it's not so top heavy where 4 schools are getting over half of the top 100 players each year.

If it does that, then great. If not, we'll continue to get blowouts.

I'm a fan of it, though

About time

Now it’s a playoff instead of an invitational

Great for money. That's where it pros end.

Quote:
The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four with each receiving a first-round bye.
So basically the easy teams that were already going to get in anyway will get a first round bye

Quote:
Teams seeded five through 12 will play each other in the first round on either the second or third weekend of December. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four with each receiving a first-round bye. Teams seeded five through 12 will play each other in the first round on either the second or third weekend of December. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played in bowl games on a rotating basis, and the championship game will be at a neutral site, as under the current four-team format.
Cool. So we maybe a couple of evenly matched games in the first round with a couple of blowouts and then a full round of blowouts following it.

Then we resume our original top 4, that already lacks parity. Maybe we get to rotate out 1 of the original top 4. Definitely seems worth it to butcher the regular season.

All this accomplishes is it make the few big regular season matchups that we do get virtually meaningless and provides us with a bunch of meaningless playoff games among teams who have almost 0 shot at winning a championship because they simply don't have the talent (CFB has always been top heavy. Maybe now more so than ever, but there has always been a monumental difference between #1 & #10). Lose to your big rival? Eh who cares. Unless you add 2 or 3 more losses on top of that then you're still in the playoffs, and given that really good teams only really play 2, 3, maybe 4 teams with a legitimate shot to beat them in the regular season then that isn't likely. You've got a spot in your conference title game locked up as a p5 team? Might be time to rest those starters.

This format works with a super conference where top teams play a legitimate threat every week. Who knows, maybe we'll have that super conference by 2026, but until then if you're a fan of Alabama, Ohio State, (insert top level program) then the regular season will be a joke. You're only playing for seeding. If you're a fan of a team on the fringe of making the playoffs, then you're playing for the right to get annihilated by a team with far superior talent after 1 or 2 rounds at best.

Re: College Football Off Topic

Something being glossed over, or not even mentioned yet, is that the first round under the 2026 format will be played on campus of the higher seeded teams. Not at neutral bowl sites (unless the host team picks an off-campus site).

Big games after the conference championships that matter.

Using last year's rankings, we would've potentially had

Oklahoma State AT Ole Miss (Winner plays Bama)
Pittsburgh AT Georgia (Winner plays Baylor)
Utah AT Notre Dame (Winner plays Cincinnati)
Michigan State AT Ohio State (Winner plays Michigan)

Re: College Football Off Topic

Looks like they are trying to get it to start in 2024. Would be nice if they can make it happen.

Re: College Football Off Topic

So according to what I read, last year would be:
12 Pitt @ 5 Georgia (winner vs 4 Baylor)
11 Utah @ 6 Notre Dame (winner vs 3 Cincinnati)
10 Michigan State @ 7 Ohio State (winner vs 2 Michigan)
9 Oklahoma State @ 8 Mississippi (winner vs 1 Alabama)

Your sources were pretty accurate...
