Re: SDSU, no punting, no kicking

While what works on paper is a lot different than what works in real life, there are several studies out there which suggest going for it, when the distance is within reason, is advantageous and will result in a first down the majority of the time.

I hope this works out for them in all honesty. I'm sure he'll still use his punters and kickers if it's not worth the risk however. Haha. I mean, going for it on 4th down when you're on your own 35 is a quick way to get fired.

It'll be interesting to look at the stats at the end of the season though.

Ninja edit - Didn't Oregon do this this past year almost? I remember seeing something where if Chip thought the field goal was too long and they had a good chance to stop the opponent on defense they would just run their normal offense and go for it. They had almost a 50% success rate I think.

While it's true that he doesn't want to punt, the yahoo article basically states that he wouldn't punt if he's in the opponent's territory. Not if he's backed up inside his own 5 or so.

Seem like this was going to be pick up by a college team eventually.

The absolutism seems a bit nutty, but the general concept is right: football coaches are way, way too conservative and should go for it more often (especially true for a mid-major like SDSU).

Just stupid I don't care what the stats are to back it up, I'm fine with more teams going for it past the 50 every now and then in certain distances but not all the time.
