PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Cathedral entered the FBS ranks back in 2013, and for namesakes, began a rivalry with Temple, an established program who the athletic department figured could generate future excitement in Atlanta.
What nobody expected, however, was for the Spartans to own the rivalry from the jump. Cathedral defeated the Owls for the third straight year in a convincing 34-17 fashion, retaining rights to the Victory Bell.
Much ado to Jeremy Johnson, who in his two years has taken Cathedral from a 1-11 record to conference champions. He did not finish his final game in the rivalry, due to a concussion.
"He's the heart and soul of this team, a true leader," head coach P.J. Fleck said. "It's my pleasure to say that both on and off the field, it doesn't get much better than Jeremy."
The senior quarterback threw for two first quarter touchdowns and 85 yards on 8-of-12 passing before leaving the game before the half.
In his absence, backup Amir Thomas was 8-of-9 for 94 yards while responding to a heavy read-option attack with 53 yards and a score on the ground. His tailbacks De'Anthony Coleman and Shaquille Fraser finished with 79 and 80 yards rushing, respectively.
Fraser finished with a career-high two scoring rushes.
Defensively, Cathedral held an aggressive Owl offense to 310 yards. Four players recorded sacks, and sophomore linebacker Kyshaun Kemplin led the team with four tackles for loss.
Up Next: The Spartans open at home with a match against UTEP (3-0).
Heisman candidate Jeremy Johnson will return to action this Saturday against UTEP after suffering a 'minor' concussion in the first half against Temple last week. The concussion was Johnson's first of his college career. Head coach P.J. Fleck claims to have taken all necessary concussion protocols required for Johnson's return. The senior quarterback has thrown 500 yards and six touchdowns through two games this season.

ATLANTA, Ga. — A week after suffering a concussion, Jeremy Johnson came out and threw for a record-setting six touchdowns in Cathedral's home opening 56-17 blowout over UTEP.
The win was the Spartans first in C-USA competition after switching over from the Sun Belt this season.
Cathedral led 35-7 at halftime behind Johnson's five touchdowns of 80, 76, 10, one and three yards. Overall, the senior tallied 346 yards passing, but also had two interceptions on 24-of-38.
On a specific play, Johnson ignited the crowd as he evaded a sack with a mid-air 360 degree spin into a pass, which was caught by Hayden Cromer for a 12-yard gain. Fans rejoiced, watching who will probably go down as the program's best player to ever come through the athletic program.
"It's just a great feeling to play at home," Johnson said. "Those guys have packed the stadium for the past two-three years. We know we have to put on a show every time we're here."
Johnson might have been able to ramp up more touchdowns in the second half, but backups got their minutes.
Shaquille Fraser recorded 108-yard of all purpose offense with 73 yards on the ground and 35 receiving. Amir Thomas tallied his first throwing touchdown of the season, and defensively, Donte' McLaurin caught his first career interception.
"We're rolling," Spartan coach P.J. Fleck said.
Up Next: Cathedral gets its second look against a P5 progam next week against No. 10 Baylor.
Looks like you have a good team here, I'll be following!
thanks for the compliment! great to have a new follower. the team is definitely in good hands for at least the remainder of this season. from then on out, we'll be searching for a new identity.

ATLANTA, Ga. — Fans chanted overrated as Baylor players left the field Saturday at Father Dalmoro Stadium.
Cathedral and head coach P.J. Fleck had earned its first-ever victory over a FBS-ranked squad in tune of a 41-21 defeat.
"I'm not calling it an upset," Fleck said. "This group of guys are very special... They belong at this stage."
Jeremy Johnson shredded the No. 10 Bears with five touchdowns and 250 yards through the air. Four of his scores came in the second half, where the Spartans outscored Baylor 27-7 to secure the victory.
UC (3-1) was without a single turnover for the first time this season. The defense came away with two takeaways; coming on a fumbled kickoff recovery by Vince Blankenship and also an interception from safety Deljuane Bush.
De'Anthony Coleman rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. All-American senior Hayden Cromer paced the receivers with seven receptions for 87 yards.
Receiver Trin Sowell and tight end James Morris had two touchdowns apiece.
Baylor's quarterback Chris Johnson threw for 225 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 21-of-28 passing. The senior also picked up 53 yards yards on the ground along with an additional score.
Up Next: Cathedral concludes the month of September with a road match against Mid Tenn State.
The Cathedral Spartans have slipped into the national top-25 rankings, placing at No. 25, following their upset victory over the top-10 Baylor Bears. The Spartans are not new to the national recognition as they were ranked multiple times in last season's 11-2 campaign finish. "We're working week in and week out to contend for championships," senior quarterback Jeremy Johnson said. "That's the bottom line. Anything that comes with it; great."Young adjusting to new role
Coaches are pleased with Chianti Young's progression into his new role as a box safety. With Young playing at linebacker depth in nickle and dime packages, the senior safety has been able to make more plays in the backfield. "It was one of the first things I wanted to do upon my arrival here," defensive coordinator Tony Bennett said. "Young is a specimen with a lot of versatility as a defender. He can do a lot to help this team." Through four games this season, Young has 15 tackles, two tackles for a loss, including a sack, an interception, six pass deflections and a fumble recovery.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Trailing 21-6 late in the first half, Cathedral quarterback willed his team to a comeback with the help of his favorite target, All-American senior Hayden Cromer.
Along with key completions, the school record-setting duo connected for touchdown passes of 29 and four yards to conclude the opening half, reducing the UC deficit to 21-20.
The two hooked up again early in the third quarter on a 17 yard touchdown, and Johnson went on to throw two more touchdowns passes of five and nine yards to complete the win on the road.
Johnson threw for 282 yards on the day, along with six touchdowns and an interception. Cromer was responsible for 137 yards receiving and three scores on nine receptions.
UC outnumbered the Blue Raiders 475 to 313 in total yardage. Cathedral's rushing attack was beneficial with 193 yards, anchored by De'Anthony Coleman, Shaquille Fraser and also Jeremy Johnson.
Head coach P.J. Fleck was proud of the team's pass rush, which accounted for a season-high seven sacks.
"They're viscous down in the trenches," he described. "Guys do their jobs, which is all we can ask out of them."
Defensive end Parker Cothren recovered MTSU's lone turnover on a fumble.
For the Blue Raiders, senior cornerback Shon Akins was very active with 17 total tackles and an interception on the day.
Up Next: The Spartans return home for Florida Atlantic next week.
