Hassan Burrill continues to post prolific rushing numbers.

EST PONT, N.Y. — It's time to stop ignoring the fact that Hassan Burrill has emerged into the dark horse Heisman candidate Jake Rasmussen was supposed to be.
The junior running back has gone wild the past couple of weeks, setting career high rushing numbers in four consecutive contests. Against Army West Point, Burrill came seven yards short of making that five straight, rushing for 178 yards as Cathedral defeated the Black Knights, 38-13, at Michie Stadium.
"He's been playing out his mind," Spartan coach Cory Bennett said. "He's always been as advertised as an athlete, but now he's putting everything together and becoming that serious threat."
While the offense behind Burrill was very efficient, this game was won by the UC defense who sniffed out Army's renowned option offense. The Spartans limited the Black Knights to 273 yards of offense - 165 on the ground - and recovered two fumbles.
Army crossed the plane just once, on a 48 yard Hail Mary heave at the end of the half, where Cathedral came out leading 21-13.
Malik Joiner had a fumble recovery and seven tackles, six coming behind the line of scrimmage, including a sack. Bennett has been very impressed with the converted outside linebacker, who began the season on the sideline.
"He's become everything we wanted him to be," Bennett said. "We knew he could be an effective linebacker, it was just the matter of time. He's shown us that he can contribute for us for the next two seasons."
Jake Rasmussen had another strong day at quarterback, finishing 17-of-23 for 155 yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore also gained 43 yards and a touchdown on nine attempts.
Both Jeremy Busch and Keidon Tompkins hauled in touchdowns and finished with 38 and 31 receiving yards, respectively. Eric Tatum led receivers with 43 yards.
Fifth-year senior running back Anton Landry was effective in relief, rushing for 64 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries.
This was a good bounce back victory for Cathedral, who lost at home to Marshall two weeks ago. Army, after being nationally ranked in the preseason polls, has fallen to 3-6 overall.

TLANTA, Ga. — Jake Rasmussen threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns as Cathedral defeated Rice 42-7 Saturday at Father Dalmoro Stadium. The Spartans (6-3, 4-1) have now won their sixth game of the season, granting them bowl eligibility, while Rice drops to 3-7 and 2-4 within conference play.
Rasmussen has become almost the unsung hero as the spotlight shifted to Hassan Burrill behind the running back's string of astounding rushing performances. But through the past three games, Rasmussen has quietly thrown just over 600 yards and eight touchdowns to no interceptions.
"It's just been the matter of adjustments," the sophomore quarterback said. "I'm trusting my line, the routes my receivers run. And it's all coming together. We've been really productive lately."
Kiedon Tompkins caught six passes for 137 yards, recording a receiving score along with fellow receivers Jeremy Busch and Dakari Coleman, the career first for the former five-star recruit.
On the ground, Hassan Burrill performed "under expectation" as he took 16 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown. It was his lowest rushing yard total since Sept. 12 against Temple. Both Anton Landry and Rasmussen contributed rushing scores while finishing with 87 and 63 yards, respectively.
In total, 238 of UC's 513 yards of offense came on the ground.
"Rice had some good players on the line," Burrill said. "Kevin Moore is a real talented end. They clogged some lanes, but we found a way to fight around and keep the ball moving."
Cathedral's defense, in comparison, held its opponent to a single touchdown for the second straight week. Rice finished with only 213 yards of offense, and its star running back Gabe Pruitt was limited to just 33 yards on 11 carries.
Spartan defensive backs Tyler Fisher and Geno Parks contributed their second and third interceptions of the season.
"We have to give a lot of credit to the offense," Fisher said. "We're not facing the same teams when we go up 35-7. They crumple and we gain all the momentum."
