Coach B-Dawg

B-Dawg fired at Vandy, rehires himself

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Beating Tennessee wasn’t enough.

Apparently, the muckity-mucks at Vanderbilt had higher expectations for the football program than is reasonable to expect, so they fired coach B-Dawg.

No need to fear, though, because after some nervous moments, B-Dawg figured out he could create a new coach and rehire himself. The only problem is his coaching record for the first three years is wiped out.

The former coach B-Dawg and the new coach B-Dawg both have three-star prestige, so there should be no impact on recruiting.

B-Dawg is 12-24 in three years at Vanderbilt with a 2-13 record against top-25 teams. One of those victories was a late-season triumph over a Tennessee team that was ranked third in the nation at the time. That meet one of the goals the administration had for B-Dawg, but apparently the Volunteers don’t qualify as a five- or six-star team (which Vandy needed to beat) and the team has yet to make a bowl game.

“I was scared to death that my entire dynasty was ruined, just like it was ruined last year when Western Michigan got booted from the MAC,” B-Dawg said. “I could go to another school, but not to anything rated higher than three stars and definitely not to Vanderbilt. I thought about just letting the CPU handle my recruiting and rehiring myself at the start of next year, but that would take all the fun out of the game. Luckily, I not only found a way to get back in the door, but figured out how to find the entire postseason top 119 rankings. You find them when you go looking for a new coaching job with a new coach.”

The three-year contract comes with these goals: Beat Tennessee, beat a five- or six-star team and finish in the top three in the Southeastern Conference.

Earl Bennett caught 245 passes for 5,002 yards and 34 TD’s in
three years.

Earl Bennett: An all-time legend
moves on from NCAA to Madden

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Earl Bennett had a fabulous three-year run with B-Dawg at Vanderbilt, but how does it stack up with the coach’s other great receivers?

“He’s the best I’ve ever coached … period,” B-Dawg said. “I’ve had some great receivers in my time, but the numbers don’t lie.”

No, they don’t.

Bennett leaves Vanderbilt with every school receiving record that EA tabulates except for catches in a game. Bennett caught 245 passes for 5,002 yards and 34 touchdowns in three seasons. His 99 catches this season are a school record, as are the 1,942 yards and 16 touchdowns he had in 2007.

He blew away the numbers compiled by B-Dawg’s all-time receiving leader, Perry Hess of Michigan. Hess also played three seasons in the exact time frame in NCAA 2005. From the 2006-08 seasons, Hess had 221 catches for 4,473 yards and 27 touchdowns. He left early for the NFL draft and was selected in the first round by Buffalo.

B-Dawg had a great impact receiver at Western Michigan in NCAA 2006, but Greg Jennings had only 35 catches for 925 yards and five touchdowns because of a reluctance to abuse him.

“Earl was our greatest deep threat and our best possession receiver,” B-Dawg said. “I couldn’t go to him enough.”

Bennett had at least 100 receiving yards in 24 of his 36 games under B-Dawg. He also had B-Dawg’s top two single-game receiving performances with 375 yards against Mississippi on Oct. 27, 2007 and 361 against Kentucky on Nov. 22, 2008.

We haven’t seen the last of Mr. Bennett, who could be a first-round pick in Madden. At 96 OVR, Bennett is tied with Michigan’s Mario Manningham for the eighth-best rating among the receivers entering the 2009 draft.

Bennett has the best chance of going to Madden among Vanderbilt’s departing seniors, but there’s a good chance he’ll be joined by one or two others. Bryant Hahnfeldt is tied for 10th in OVR among kickers entering the draft, while Reshard Langford is tied for 14th among strong safeties.

“Both of those guys are borderline,” B-Dawg said. “It just depends on how deep the draft class is at various positions.”

Bennett isn’t the only key receiver who needs to be replaced. The Commodores are graduating four receivers and need to fill three slots during recruiting. George Smith had 83 catches for 1,165 yards and four touchdowns, while Bryant Anderson had 79 catches for 914 yards and five scores in three years with B-Dawg.

Q-Lew, Vierling flirt with draft, stay put

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A kid gets pie-in-the-sky dreams once he’s made an All-America team, but linebacker Quavian Lewis and center Bradley Vierling are not ready for the NFL.

Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg was able to persuade his two second-team All-Americans that they’d be better off staying one more year with the Commodores with only three-point efforts given to both players.

Lewis was 10th in the country with 83 tackles, making 19 for losses and six sacks.

“I was told if I stayed another year, it would help my draft status,” Lewis said.

“The more I think about it, the more excited I get about playing for you, Coach,” added Vierling.

Vierling tied for 11th in the nation in pancakes with 30, allowing only two sacks on a team that gave up 50.

CLASSES OF 2024/2009 RECRUITING

5-star athlete/quarterback headlines
Vandy’s 11th-ranked recruiting class

Vanderbilt’s quarterback of the future has been secured.

The shiny new toy in the Commodores’ Class of 2024 is Greg Freeman, a five-star athlete from Northbrook, Ill.

Freeman is 80 OVR as an athlete with the potential to play elsewhere on the field, but Vanderbilt is looking to replace three-year record-breaking starter Mike Wright. In true B-Dawg fashion, he’s looking to go with a freshman starter next season to see what kind of career numbers he can compile.

Freeman is also 80 OVR when moved to quarterback. He has 78 SPD, making him the fastest quarterback on the roster, to go with 88 THP and 82 THA. He also has 72 CTH, 81 BTK and 85 CAR.

“He’s not super fast, but those carry and broken tackle ratings could come in handy on the read option,” B-Dawg said. “We think we have our next great quarterback.”

Freeman is the headliner in a class that ranked 11th nationally. If he falters, four-star Darren Livingston has also been recruited at quarterback. He’s one of four four-star recruits in Vanderbilt’s class.

No joke: Barry Sanders signs with Vandy;
Commodores have No. 41 class in 2009

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — It’s hard to determine which is more difficult to believe: That there’s a five-star recruit named Barry Sanders from West Bloomfield, Mich. in the 2009 recruiting class … or that he actually signed with Vanderbilt.

This Barry Sanders isn’t a running back, but a free safety. Not just any free safety, but the top-ranked free safety in the nation coming out of high school.

And he’s coming to Nashville.

“I guess we can start calling him Junior, because he must be the son of the original Barry Sanders,” Vanderbilt coach B-Dawg said. “Barry lives in Oakland County, probably not too far from West Bloomfield. When I saw a Barry Sanders was in the recruiting class and that he actually had high interest in our team, he became priority No. 1 for us.”

Sanders is the prized recruit in a class that ranks 41st in the nation because of one five-star, one four-star and five three-star players heading the group. Vanderbilt had room to sign 25 players, but got only 13 commitments, as the Commodores actually had only a little more than half as many recruiting points available (46) with a 40 percent budget than they had at 34 percent (about 75).

“I have no clue why our recruiting points were drastically less, even though we cranked up the budget,” B-Dawg said. “It made it very difficult to make a strong pitch for anyone. We didn’t devote more than four points per week to most players. We are extremely fortunate to get a player of Barry Sanders’ caliber, considering we never did more than two assistant coach visits with him.”

Sanders signed in the third week of recruiting. He originally listed Vanderbilt No. 2 behind Georgia Tech. The Commodores got plenty of interest from talented free safeties, because they had a void to fill.

Sanders’ 40 time was listed at 4.24 seconds, translating to 95 SPD in the game. No players were scouted, so their true workout numbers weren’t known.

“With that kind of speed, we might throw him in there as a receiver as well,” B-Dawg said. “Our returning receivers aren’t all that fast, so he would be a nice fit in addition to some of our new receivers.”

He is the first five-star recruit signed by the Commodores in three recruiting seasons. He is the 18th-rated overall recruit in the country, making him the first top-100 guy to commit to Vanderbilt during B-Dawg’s tenure.

Receivers also expressed a lot of interest in Vanderbilt, which had three openings. A diamond in the rough came out of this recruiting class in the person of three-star receiver Jason Toth of Winchester, Tenn. Toth’s 40 time was listed at 4.31, not necessarily the fastest even among Vanderbilt’s recruits. Well, Mr. Toth is certain to be a favorite of B-Dawg’s for years to come, as he checks in with — YES!!!!! — 99 SPD.

“Talk about getting stiff as a rock,” B-Dawg said. “When I saw 99 SPD and 98 ACC, I knew we had a steal on our hands. The kid will replace Earl Bennett very nicely.”

Despite a lack of numbers, B-Dawg is elated with this class.

“We filled our needs and we got some high-caliber players to sign,” he said. “We didn’t need to sign 25 guys, really. I mean, you can only put 11 on the field at a time. Just give me a few studs we can lean on and we can do some damage. We got a whole lot faster, which is imperative in the SEC. I’m stoked for the upcoming season.”

The only four-star player in the group is strong safety Keith Cunningham, who committed during the 2008 season. He was listed as the No. 2 strong safety in the country during the season, but is No. 9 on the final rankings.

Barry Sanders isn’t the only familiar name in this year’s recruiting class. Vanderbilt also signed a cornerback named James Pressley. James Presley (with one “S”) was the name of a star fullback in B-Dawg’s NCAA 2005 Michigan dynasty. That Presley had more than 4,000 rushing yards in his career, even though he never panned out as a real-life Wolverine.

Quarterback is the natural position for Freeman, what is his acceleration?

"Yes, but I’m not very good at defense. It seems like every quarterback throws for 80% and 350-plus yards against me. I like having every stat be something that occurred with me playing the game. I once accidentally simmed and saved a game. It destroyed my mind!"

Same, I just pick a DL and rush the passer

Coach B, I've been following your work since the MaddenMania days! Any plans to jump on the PS5/NCAA train next summer?

If I recall, he could've gone QB or WR and been the same. He seemed too slow for a WR. To be honest, I'm actually four seasons ahead playing the game vs. posting it. I got to where I didn't have time to do my posts right but wanted to play a game, so I've got a bunch of notes to sort through. ACC isn't usually an attribute I jot down unless it's crazy. His SPD seemed adequate to be able to do some running, but not be a major running threat when I made him a QB.

I've never been able to do that with a DL. They just get stuck in the blocking or I have to swing so far wide that the QB has thrown the ball before I can get there. I can't play manual defense worth a lick, even after all these years of playing the game. I just call the defense and will click on the player closest to the ball when a tackle needs to be made.

Glad to see someone who might remember when the Turn Back the Clock Vanderbilt dynasty was a current dynasty. Hard to believe it's been 17 years since I originally wrote that dynasty. I am 50-50 in regards to getting a PS5. I guess I'll have to see reviews of the game first by regular game players, not shills who get free/early access to games for favorable reviews. Financially, that would be a big hit for me unless the cost of a PS5 drops into the $200-250 range. I only play NCAA Football. Granted, I could use the PS5 for streaming, etc., but you don't really need a game system to do that anymore.

NCAA '07 2009 SPRING GAME

Alex Washington scores the spring game’s only touchdown on
an 83-yard pass from Antwan Smith.

Freshman QB earns impact status
despite up-and-down spring game

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — B-Dawg is determined to make a star out of red-shirt freshman quarterback Antwan Smith, so much so that he bequeathed impact status on a player who has never taken a snap for Vanderbilt.

Smith showed flashes of brilliance and flashes of inexperience as he led the Black team controlled by B-Dawg to a 37-27 victory over the Gold in Vanderbilt’s 2009 spring game.

Smith was 10-for-16 for 177 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, hitting Alex Washington with an 83-yard pass on fourth-and-13 for the game’s only touchdown. Smith also used his 88 SPD to run eight times for 37 yards.

“I figure Antwan was our best offensive player on a day when nobody really stood out offensively,” B-Dawg said. “Antwan is going to run quite a bit for us and having that impact circle under his feet might help him bring a tackle or two along the way. How being an impact player helps a user-controlled quarterback pass the ball, I’m not really sure. Mackenzi Adams had impact status last year and still threw plenty of interceptions and didn’t have as good a year as he had the year before.”

The defensive MVP was outside linebacker Quavian Lewis, who gets impact status for the second year in a row. Lewis had four tackles, including two sacks, while playing for both teams.

The random impact player was another outside linebacker, Kikko Logan.

“Oh, man, is this going to be a fun year on defense,” B-Dawg said. “Impact linebackers have a way of imposing their will on a game like no other position. We are automatically a better defense today because we have two impact linebackers. I can smell the fumbles coming our way already.”

The Gold team got the ball first, but an interception by safety Ryan Hamilton helped the Black team lead 19-14 after the first five minutes.

The Black offense tried to give that lead right back, with an interception by D.J. Moore tying the game 27-27. The 83-yard bomb to Washington broke the tie, giving the Black a 33-27 lead. An option keeper by Smith on third-and-12 got a first down and produced the 37-27 final score.
