Contact Animations, what are your thoughts on them?

I wanted to know what you guys think of the contact animations mostly in the paint area and on the perimeter.

Do you like or dislike anything about it?

I'd love to hear from you guys who have played Live 09 and Live 10.

Tell me what do you think...basketball is a contact sport, right?

This is the thing before the patch I hated to see contact animations. And no fouls called. Not one. But post patch I see alot more fouls called. I like the Live conpect. It can be a little too much at times. You blow by a guy and he is still able to cause a contact aimation....it sucks to see it.

At first, I wasn't a fan as it seems every time I'd drive the lane I was getting hit and missing shots. The more I played, I began to understand the importance of using the L-stick during the drive and now I score more consistently in the paint, even if I'm getting hit.

IRL, there are very few "clean" layups. Most drives to the basket involve some form of collision/contact and I think NBA Live captures that well.

Re: Contact Animations, what are your thoughts on them?

Well mainly, it would be nice if they didn't happen so often... a large part of that is because the charges are broken and basically don't work at all. Your outcomes when driving are limited to: 1) open shot/layup/dunk, 2) a. contested shot/layup/dunk animation that goes in or b. contested shot animation that doesn't go in, or 3) a block. You will occasionally see wide open misses at the rim, but there should be many more instances of charging or blocking fouls on contact, not always the normal shooting contact fouls.

Also I mean there is that fine lane. Everyone knows the close you get the basket the easier the shot should be. I know people have brought up the concept of making layups and dunks just like shooting. You press a button to start the animation and then release it to let the ball go/dunk/layup. Its sort of a good thing but really a bad thing for causal user. I know hardcore users would love something like that. But every time I think about a user like my little sister who just on the controller to have a little fun. She should have to go through a 2 hour lesson on how to play the game. Know what I mean?

            Someone tell me this

How is it that LeBron can run downcourt at full speed, then get stopped on a dime by Chris Duhon at the other end just because he's standing there, and there is no foul, no charge, no bowling over him, nothing?

How often does that happen? LeBron get the ball go fullcourt and get stopped by someone who is standing there. I mean in a one on one situation Chris Duhon is not going to win that match-up. 9 times of the 10 LeBron will get something in his favor in that situation.

Duhon might cause some contact. But LeBron is going to get high percentage shot in his favor.

I wish I could tell you, I have had countless 2 on 1 fast breaks that end just like that, there should be some kind of internal momentum gauge, 100 out 100 times Lebron would posterize Duhon on a play like that, just like the Ricky Davis on Steve Nash play a couple years back.

It wont happen. LeBron would knock Duhon over just like he did Delonte West, but in this game, Duhon is as strong as Shaq because of the contact animations.

They had charge animations in the game last year and now they're gone.

I like them but I think ball handlers get "sucked into them" too often...so the programmers either need to make collision detection more sensitive or they need to add more animations that would make ball handlers make less contact with defenders so that they are not fully impeded...

Not trying to be funny, but watch the 3 sequences with Wade starting at 1:05

I understand why they are there somewhat, but they are overdone imo. Not just in air collisions either...its hard to take proper angles b/c of defense sucking you in so often. As far as mid air collisions...almost anyone can contact anyone and the result will be the same...same animation, everything. Sure, there is contact in the paint on the NBA, but these are pro ballers man..there should be more creative ways to finish in the lane...the contact animation you see in Live is a foul the majority of time in the league....we just need more variation..

Exactly 23. Its like the body types don't matter. Physics should play a huge part in collisions not invisible walls
