The numbers guy typically ain't the "hot take" guy. I think most know where I fall on that spectrum.

Evaluating OVRs (Player Value) isn't just about flashy numbers, it's also evaluating player roles. There is plenty to gleaned off one game. If anything the first game of the year is the most telling.

          (Thanks for watching)

I agree. You can tell a lot and very telling in 1 game especially with young guys in rotation, how they fit or play in system, or improvement in the off season. Look at Nwora or Duarte as examples. I said this in another thread it will be interesting to see the Pacers rotations When healthy. Duarte is ready now. Hard to keep him off the court. Sacramento and maybe going away from Bagley, etc. Haven’t watched the video yet but will give it a go…

              My disagreements:
I think Jordan Nwora is way too low at 73. He's not really a 3pt specialist as much as he is an offensive threat, shot creator, or 3-level scorer. I think his mid-range is too low here. He's a threat from mid-range.

You have to look into the nuance of what James Harden was doing. He focused on building that chemistry with Nic Claxton as his pick n roll big partner. He knows that building up that kid will make his life much easier in game 40 and 50 of this year. He definitely made conscious decisions to give him chances to receive the ball in moments when James could have scored.

I'm WAY down on Joe Harris. He needs to be moved. Especially with Patty Mills slinging hot fire. He folded in game 7 when it mattered and we need someone like Miles Turner on our team (big who can shoot, rebound, and defend). I want that trade to happen like yesterday.

While this is funny, NBA teams draft & sign players based off of smaller sample sizes than 1 NBA game every year.

Also there was an entire pre-season and summer league to help inform these game 1 opinions.

ALSO (lol) if we couldn't have hot takes rookies wouldn't get ratings until halfway through the season.

Gonna have to agree with Jeebs here.

Let's look at some of last year's opening day standouts:

                - Terry Rozier went 10-16 from 3pt for 42 points.

                - Domantas Sabonis went 32 points 13 reb and 5 ast.. he's not the Joker, but his stats would say he is. He's good, but not THAT good last season.

                - Larry Nance Jr. was 13, 8, and 8!

                - RJ Barret 26, 8, and 5 and went perfect from three. That was a mirage last year.

                - Even Bam Adebayo was crushing it in the first few weeks of the season before coming down to earth.

Let's see if Nwora and Chris Duarte ACTUALLY do this stuff all year long. I would err on the side of caution and say no. Solid players maybe, but it was just one game.

All that said, I like the stock watch as long as it's not drastically changing ratings and is used more dramatically on the tendencies.

Nailed this part! This is exactly what I use early games for is tendency edits.

For example Barnes was 8-11 in spot up 3’s last night I believe. Nwora 3 level, spot 3’s, stepback 3, floaters, etc. Duarte 6 3’s but created and spot up 3. But then fit them into their ranges to get that result. But can also use with sub rotations.I use early games to scout and tweak player tendencies.

Another example (time will tell) is Fournier in New York. Sometimes player get green lights in places before they didn't. They might be more aggressive or shoot more or less. Maybe they are more comfortable with their role. Look at Westbrook trying to fit in. Will he defer more this year? We will see… But I do think 5-10 games is a better sample size for sure but you can still see that player x is taking this or that shot from this spot if open or covered. Or he finished with a euro, spin, or floater.

Oh you think I don't know some of these players are grossly underrated or overrated? It's been like this for years. I've always asked this question when it comes to rating changes. Do you change a rating after a game or do you change it after a week or do you wait after a month?

Also don't bring overall ratings up to me lol. I'm not going to play that game. I need individual ratings and badges.

Maybe I have too faith in our current system.

Like Should Chris get a Boost?

Lol I love your idea of trading for Turner. But.... Hmmmm I don't know if Pacers are just going to let him walk for just another shooter. But Pat was hot. Defensively he's small. He will eventually get attacked off the floor. Joe play solid defender in my opinion.

I watched Duarte a lot (Pac 12 region) in college and you can just see certain things with players when scouting. I’m not saying he will be a superstar right away or hit 6 3’s every game. But he did play well in pre season as well and did it in college too. This also reminds me of Anunoby & Siakim a few years back their rookie year. They were so poorly rated out of the box and you could immediately see their impact in early games. You could see the potential there. Same with Kevin Huerter. I knew this coming in but Last night Davion Mitchell got plenty of minutes and was giving Dane fits last night. We already knew he is a defensive standout but he will only improve over time as well as he gets comfortable. You can see he will have a roll all season and contribute. On the flip side AYo for the bulls got some time but I’m not sure how he will translate just yet. Some players you can just see it and others is wait and see. Im also not sure on Nwora but tendency wise I can see what he needs and can do.

I agree that I wouldn't give boosts or drops based on 1 game or even 1 week for that matter, but it can give you insight on if you severely underrated someone at a specific skill.

Like if you gave a guy a 25 rating on 3 point shooting and they go 5 for 5 in a game. Someone rated a 25 is incapable of shooting like that. (This an extreme example).

I know Pacers been holding onto Turner but they clearly don't need him. Maybe even a 3-team trade. There's a team that would love Joe Harris as their shooter in the lineup.

New Orleans maybe? Put Joe Harris in the lineup with BI, JV, and Zion to help with spacing. Then Miles Turner to Nets. Pacers get a 1st from NO and contract fillers.

Agree. The thing is there are tons of examples like your drastic one out of the box. Especially within tendencies. The thing is though especially with rookies or young players who have not received much playing time in young career as of yet 2k ratings is just a hot take as well. So adjusting a player after 1 game is probably a improvement from the out of the box rating with no game scouting from 2k.

I've touched on this, but I really want to hammer this point home:

The actual BOX numbers for those players don't matter.. Chris Duarte is obviously not going to average 27 PPG. Yet he WILL most likely occupy a rotation spot, something his OVR does not currently reflect. His opener performance only serves to cement that.

As far as some other cited examples... Terry Rozier had a career year so the opener was certainly a harbinger. Nobody was saying Rozier should get a 90+ rating after one game, but I'd bet he probably went up in rating in the first 2K update.

Good point! I play 30 team control and set each teams sub rotations in paint draw but I’m sure most don’t do that and rely on Cpu using overall to get certain players minutes. If not high enough you will never see them.
