What. Just the opposite, in fact. A 3-2-1 system:
- would not add any extra intensity to OT; nothing has changed!
- would result in teams becoming even more conservative in the 3rd period of tied/close games than they are now, especially in intraconference games; you'll see more games go to OT/SO than you do now
- would result in mediocre coaches/GMs/owners pointing to their point totals as proof that they're "better than their record"; fans/media already are hardwired to believe that a 100-point team is "elite" and that a 92-point team is "10 games over .500"; they'll be overjoyed with further points creep!
It's always baffled me why so many push for a 3-2-1 format. It'll reward already-good teams (ie, those that win blowouts and can hold leads) but will likely make the on-ice product worse, not better.
