This years top six appears deadly on paper, with a very strong bottom six as well. The top two lines are very interchangeable, with Eberle, Ennis, Nugent-Hopkins, and Couture all being able to play center, there are very many different ways they can be plugged into the lineup on any night. Ennis and Eberle had great chemistry to end last season, but Taylor Hall will be given every chance at being this teams number one left wing.

Alex Semin has been moved to the right side to start this season, as this teams left wing depth is remarkable. It helps that Semin is a right handed shot, and he has also stated that he is comfortable on either side. He really stepped up his off season workout regimen this year, and appears hungrier than ever to get off to a solid start this season. He has a much deserved chip on his shoulder after last years lackluster performance. He remains one of the highest paid players on the team, and will be relied upon heavily this season, especially after the departures of both Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner.

Defense this year looks markedly better than last seasons core. The addition of Fedor Tyutin will give another solid #2 defenseman to the team. Although Edmonton has a strong D core, they still lack a true #1 defenseman, they have a lot of #2-4 type players, which will hopefully help to lighten the load on the younger Pietrangelo and Sbisa. It appears as though the entire defensive core is more than capable of playing 20+ minutes a night, it will be interesting to see how the coach balances everything out, and who, if anyone, emerges as a leader.
Posted on July 22, 2013 at 06:38 PM.
Deadline day was one of the most boring days all season, as Edmonton made zero moves and the rest of the league only combined for five moves all day.

The Oilers finished the season with a 44-34-4 record good for 92 points and the 7th seed in the Western Conference.

Some players made great strides this season, most notably Jordan Eberle and Tyler Ennis. Ennis who was bumped to the teams top line in February managed to put up 40 points over the teams last 36 games. He and Eberle may have found some chemistry.

Taylor Hall failed to improve on his rookie season statistics, tallying only 40 points. He will need to step up for sure. Another disappointment was the performance of Alex Semin, the team spent big money for his services this past offseason, and he only managed to put 38 points up on the board. He has three years remaining on his deal.

One of the best offseason acquisitions appears to be defenseman Josh Gorges, he scored 5 goals and 26 points, and was also +11 on the season. He, along with rookie Luca Sbisa were perhaps the teams best defenseman all season long. Sbisa, who was acquired from Anaheim at last seasons deadline suited up for all 82 games this season, scoring 27 points, and lead all defenseman at +16.

Edmonton was swept in four games by the #2 seeded Phoenix Coyotes.

3.2.2011

Oilers acquired D-Luca Sbisa from Anaheim in exchange for D-Henrik Tallinder

Oilers acquired C-Emerson Etem & 4th-2011-BUF from Buffalo in exchange for D-Taylor Chorney & 3rd-2011-EDM

Analysis-The Oilers manage to get even younger, shipping off two bottom pairing defensemen for two prospects with big upside.
Sbisa will suit up next season for the Oilers and will likely jump into a big role right out of the gates, he has good size, and good hands, not as physical as one might expect, but he brings a very sound two-way element to his game.
Etem has the potential to break the lineup next season as well. He piled up goals in juniors but his awareness and hockey IQ may need some work if he wants to produce at the next level.
At the end of the day, the Oilers are younger, faster, and cheaper, they got rid of two defenseman with little left to offer and got a couple high potential players in return.

Season Statistics

Oilers finished in 8th place in the Western Conference, with a record of 41-36-5, good for 87pts. They lost in 6 games to the Presidents Trophy winner, Columbus Blue Jackets.

Overall a solid year. Taylor Hall struggled throughout, but had a strong push late, much the same as Logan Couture, who missed 17 games due to injury. Hemsky and Penner had strong seasons, and it was largely a surprise to have Torres and Jones score 20+ goals each. Look for Pietrangelo to be the #1 d-man going forward, rumor has it that Ryan Whitney is on his way out, there could be a logjam on D if he stays, due to the Sbisa acquisition.

Going to be following a new BAGM in NHL 2011, documenting the Edmonton Oilers franchise.

We'll pick up in the offseason of 2010, starting with the NHL Entry Draft; followed by the re-sign phase, and finally free agency; any and all trades will be documented throughout the process.

Draft Recap

The Oilers had a bevy of picks in this years draft, ten in total, and they kept them all. It was not shocker that the Oilers went with consensus number one, Taylor Hall. The skillful left winger will likely play top 6 minutes in the NHL right away. Edmonton appears to have addressed their weaknesses well, drafting four defenseman, including big Reid McNeill, and the skilled two-way defenseman Mark Pysyk. The team drafted two center icemen, in Cody Lindsay and Jérôme Raymond, both are low risk-high reward players, though their small statures may prevent them from ever cracking an NHL line-up, they do have high upside.

Edmonton will still need to address their blue line through free agency or the trade market, as they departed with two quality defenseman on draft day. Tom Gilbert was sent packing to Tampa Bay, this move garnered a first round draft choice for next years draft. Problematic Sheldon Souray was also finally sent packing, he departed to St. Louis, and will see young D-man Alex Pietrangelo and tough guy Ryan Reaves come to Edmonton in return. Many fans are ecstatic to get such a return for Souray, his troubles in Edmonton had been well documented and his value had assumedly plummeted. Edmonton brass are very high on Pietrangelo and hope he can step into a leading role in the next couple of seasons in Edmonton; he brings franchise player potential to the team.
