The hiring of Mike D'Antoni for the Los Angeles Lakers has more to do with the future than the present.
There was an ESPN report during training camp about the Lakers eyeing Lebron James in the summer of 2014. The Lakers would have only two players on their cap(if howard re-signs) and plenty of cap space. Lebron will have a player option that summer in which he could exit his contract.

Creating a team in your coach's image.
The current advantage that the Lakers is the front court size. This is great for a coach that emphasizes defense and a slow paced offense. Rebounding and length in the paint to deter opponents from getting to the basket.
Even considering this the front office chose to go with a coach that preaches up-tempo basketball. Does the current roster have the pieces to execute Mike D'Antoni's style of play?

Better player to build around Anthony Davis or kyrie Irving? Both players have their strengths and weaknesses. Anthony will start with a high rating for a player who hasn't played a game. He will undoubtedly have a high potential rating also. If you choose the hornets you could expect to start out with a great shot blocker.
