Sweeeet! Oh, the memories. Time to dust off the DS.

The reviews of this game have not been pretty

I'm not sure they're looking for what most tecmo gamers are looking for, though.

Looking at the scores, I was afraid I'd be disappointed. Reading the text of the reviews, it just solidified that this is exactly what I wanted the game to be. It's Tecmo Bowl....that's what I wanted.
Exactly.

That 1UP review contradicted itself several times. I also didn't understand what he meant by not knowing the down & distance on 4th down plays? I mean, even if that isn't displayed on the screen (which, to be fair, is a little puzzling if true), shouldn't you have an idea of where your team is on the field and how many yards to go for a 1st down?

The comment about not ripping off big plays also is laughable. Everyone that's played Tecmo knows that the defenders always have had ridiculous closing speed and that's why the zig-zag running became so popular in the game.

can we go for the 2 pt conversion in this game...also one reviewer said you cannot quit a season in the middle...dont you just have to get into the schedule and hit reset...these reviewers are early 20 somethings that never even played super tecmo bowl i bet!

The text of the reviews makes it seem like its exactly what I was hoping. Classic Tecmo Super Bowl. I cant wait to see some creative rosters. I was thinking of making franchise divisions(for example, the NFC East would be the 86 Giants, 91 Giants, 00 Giants and 07 Giants).

Now now, don't pin that on us people in their early 20's lol. I'm 21 and played the hell out of tecmo bowl/tecmo super bowl when I was a kid. I can't wait to play this on my DS.

i apologize...what i meant was most people havent played the game for 15 years and are comparing it to football games of today, which it clearly is not...some people on the other hand have been playing it non stop for the last 15 years...http://www.knobbe.org/mx/index.php

Everything about it says that its a handheld version of Super Tecmobowl with a few upgrades. Great, thats exactly what I want. Its going on the Christmas list.

I agree. It would take deliberate action in order to screw up Tecmo Bowl.

# 12 AWS88 @ 11/19/08 02:23 PM
I just picked the game up. I played a quick game (3 min. quarters) and didn't find anything wrong with the game. Feels like tecmo bowl to me. Anyone looking for a handheld version of tecmo bowl will love it.

The game is Tecmo Bowl and it's on DS. The graphics are fun, the gameplay is there (although you will notice a difference...a tad slower in my opinion) and you have a decent editor for teams (although, I may just keep them or make my own fictional league...I don't want to rename all of the players....what a hassle).

What people will bitch about:

Logo editor is limited and by limited I mean that you can't actually create or "make up" a logo. In fact, you have a VERY small number to pick from (so small, that I think teams do share logos...I'll have to check).

Uniform editor is limited too. You aren't able to create pinpoint perfect recreations of the NFL teams. Close? Sure. Not the cigar though. I'm a bit peeved at this as well, but only because I'd like the option. Logos don't bother me because they aren't that clear in gameplay anyway...
The name editor won't allow for dirty words.

What people will LOVE:

The gameplay.

That you can go for two.

That there are weather changes and the cut scenes are cool.

What people will be iffy about:

Super abilities. I haven't seen any yet, but supposedly players can get "hot" and recieve super abilities during the game.

My two cons are that my running back fumbled three times in my first game and it ended in a tie because of that (yes, Mcnabb, there are ties). The other con is that my second game froze after the third quarter...what the hell.

All in all, EXACTLY what I need for those long toilet stays, those nights when TV is good and those days where the wife demands I spend some time in the other rooms of the house.

That happened during my first game. I hope its not a sign.

Got the game today and have played a couple of quick games so far.

Classic Tecmo gameplay, so everyone that played the old games will have no trouble getting into this one.

One neat twist is that you actually change sides of the field during the game; meaning you play L-to-R for two quarters and R-to-L the other two. It takes a bit to get used to going the "opposite" way but I like it, adds to the challenge.

Players are a little slower than the NES versions. I saw a couple of fumbles in my games and also saw a couple of open WR drop passes. Not too concerned with either of those things, although I will watch the fumble frequency.

I can't believe no one mentioned this: when you start the game up, you see a list of all the teams. In the division that mimmicks the NFC East, you'll see Dallas, Washington, Philly and LA?!? Oh wait, it gets better. LA's nickname? SUPERCOCKS!!!! I am dead serious. I laughed for a good minute at that one. I'm a big Giants fan, but man, I don't know if I can change that name. I thought Tecmo had the "no bad words" filter on? Cassel's name can't get in but this team name does? Hmm.

As mentioned above, the logo and uniform editor aren't expansive, but you can get close on the colors for the NFL teams. You can also edit player attributes, so that might help make some of the players run faster, etc. It's capped at certain numbers, so you can't max out your guys right away.

You can edit all the names and numbers. I'm thinking instead of doing all current rosters I'll do some current, some classic and like with the Giants one I've started, do an all-time great team, with a mix of past and present players.

I'll be playing a lot more but so far, really like what I'm seeing.

Actually, although limited, the uniform editor CAN make pretty close to accurate (at least during gameplay) NFL uniforms. I apologize if I said differently earlier because I just made the Bears and Minnesota and started a game and it reeked of old Tecmo goodness.

Maybe I will go ahead and start renaming and all of that....I've got the time since I traded in Madden for this!

Here are my rosters:
I'm leaning towards breaking the 8 divisions down as follows:
NFC East-4 of the best Giants teams
NFC North-4 of the best Packers teams
NFC South-4 of the best Cowboys teams
NFC West-4 of the best 49'ers teams
AFC East-4 of the best Patriots teams
AFC North-4 of the best Steelers teams
AFC South-4 of the best Colts teams
AFC West-4 of the best Broncos or Raiders teams

Cool idea.

Is there a way to share rosters over WiFi?

We should get a friends code list going, too, if anyone ever wants to play online.

If I were younger, I would have been freaking out for this game. I remember my baseball stars teams that were based on friends, family, superheroes, movies, etc.

I'd have a whole Star Wars Conference and a whole Star Trek conference and try to guide the Scotland Scottys to the Intergalactic Championship.

Now, I'll probably just NFL edit or keep it.

I thought about creating the Any Given Sunday league too...
