OT: Stephen King story ever a movie?

I loved "The Mist" and tend to read it once a year. Great horror story. While a bit sci-fi, it certainly tugs at you in a good way.

Has there ever been a movie done of this story? I remember the old movie "The Fog" with Hal Holbrook. That wasn't based on the movie from what I remember. The new one that came out last year was an adaptation of the 79 movie.

I doubt "The Mist" was ever touched. It would be cool to see if it was though.

Well, the tug can be done easily, but "The Mist" requires some sort of mesh covering....

Ah, hell, I tried

I don't think there was ever a movie made from this short story. It's one of my favorite's as well. I wish he had made it into a full-length novel.

I definitely agree it had/has some potential for a movie. I could have sworn i heard there was a movie being made about it at some point in the 90s, but obviously nothing ever came of that.

dola. Just did a search and found a blog that makes it look like perhaps Frank Darabout (Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) is working on it.

Very cool! I've always enjoyed the story but apparently it had been licensed out to film for about 20 years now and nothing ever came of it. I'm very glad to see that's now changed...

how old was she? I read that story a long time ago.

If she's older I'd toss out Julianne Moore, if younger lets go with Alicia Witt.

I'm thinking she was late twenties/early thirties. Re-read the story a few months back but don't remember that exact detail, though...

OMG!!!! I just fell backward in time to 7th grade...

my mom was leary about me reading that. that was the time when rumors of kids playing D&D were going around neighborhoods killing animals, acting out their quests. I had to tell her that because it said the words Dungeon and dragon in the summary, it wasn't affiliated with that stuff.

It was a very, very good book. I would probably read it again for nostalgia sake.

Which release was this one in? I don't believe I've read it before.

Off topic, but has anyone gotten their hands on King's new novel? The reviews make it sound like it is vintage King.

Eyes of the Dragon was a separate book...Steven King wanted to write a story he was comfortable for his 10 or 11 year old daughter reading...so he wrote it....

its a wonderful story of good versus evil...

Yup, Skeleton Crew.

I always loved Eyes of the Dragon. I don't know how many times I've read it, but it's been a bunch. Of course, I've read most of King's novels a bunch of times.

Haven't picked up Cell yet, it may have to wait until the summer when I have more free time to read...

I had Skeleton Crew on my bookshelf and read "the Mist" last night (finished at 3:30 AM).

Good stuff. I really love survival/catastrophe type stories like it.

Nightmares & Dreamscapes Debuts July 12
Source: TNT May 10, 2006

Turner Network Television (TNT) is putting the summer on ice with its chilling all-star television event Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King. This four-week collection of eight mind-bending tales from the master of horror, set to premiere Wednesday, July 12, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT), features an all-star cast of Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe winners and nominees. The first installment of the series will be presented uninterrupted and commercial-free.

Five of the adaptations for "Nightmares & Dreamscapes" come from Kings 1993 anthology of the same name. "The Road Virus Heads North" and "Autopsy Room Four" come from Kings 2002 anthology "Everything's Eventual," while "Battleground" comes from 1978's "Nightshift."

"Nightmares & Dreamscapes" comes to TNT from Bill Habers Ostar Enterprises, with Haber (The Uprising, Jack and the Bean Stalk: The True Story, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) serving as executive producer. The series producers include Mike Robe, Jeffrey Hayes and John McMahon.

The "Nightmares & Dreamscapes" line-up:

Teleplay by April Smith (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three); based on the Short Story by Stephen King; directed by Rob Bowman (Reign of Fire, Elektra).

After the death of his son, writer Sam Landry (Macy) is so desperate to lead another life, he writes himself into his own book, forcing his long-time character (also played by Macy) to change places with him and live in the modern day. But things get deadly when Landry realizes Umney is trapped and cannot write himself out of his new reality. Jacqueline McKenzie co-stars as Landrys distraught wife.

The End of the Whole Mess

Starring Golden Globe nominee Ron Livingston (Band of Brothers, The Cooler) and Golden Globe nominee Henry Thomas (E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Legends of the Fall).

Teleplay by Lawrence D. Cohen (Carrie, Stephen Kings It); based on the Short Story by Stephen King; directed by Mikael Salomon (TNTs Salem's Lot).

The world had changed. Violence, war and hatred have been replaced with kindness, peace and love. But at what price? Renowned filmmaker Howie Fornoy (Livingston), with just one hour to live, recounts the details of his brothers (Thomas) worldwide experiment gone terribly wrong.

Crouch End

Starring Golden Satellite nominee Eion Bailey (And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself, Band of Brothers) and Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black, Ripley Under Ground).

Teleplay by Kim LeMasters (Threshold); based on the Short Story by Stephen King; directed by Mark Haber (Border Patrol, Alien Cargo, Daisies in December).

A newlywed American couple (Bailey and Forlani) honeymooning in London goes to Crouch End to have dinner with a friend. They soon learn the town is not what it appears to be, and the more they get lost, the more they become trapped in another dimension.

The Fifth Quarter

Starring Jeremy Sisto (Six Feet Under, TNT's Julius Caesar) and Samantha Mathis (TNT's The Mists of Avalon and Salem's Lot)

Teleplay by Alan Sharp (Rob Roy, Reversible Errors); based on the Short Story by Stephen King; directed by Rob Bowman (Reign of Fire, Elektra).

Willie (Sisto), a just-released convict, learns from his dying friend of a map in four parts that reveals the location of several million dollars from a robbery. Seeking revenge for the death of his friend and the money, as well, Willie hunts down the others who hold the remaining three parts to the map, risking his family and his freedom.

Autopsy Room Four

Starring Emmy winner Richard Thomas (The Waltons) and Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee Greta Scacchi (Flightplan, Rasputin).

Teleplay by April Smith (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three); based on the Short Story by Stephen King; directed by Mikael Salomon (TNT's Salem's Lot).

Businessman Howard Cottrell (Thomas) is on vacation playing one of his many games of golf. Chasing the ball into the undergrowth, he is bitten by a snake and completely paralyzed, showing no signs of life. At the hospital, unable to communicate, he is the key witness to his own autopsy.

You Know They Got a Hell of a Band

Starring Emmy winner Kim Delaney (NYPD Blue, CSI: Miami) and Steven Weber (The Shining, Wings).

Teleplay by Mike Robe (News at Eleven, Guts and Glory: The Rise and Fall of Oliver North); based on the Short Story by Stephen King; directed by Mike Robe.

A wrong turn on a lonely road turns frightening for Clark and Mary Willingham (Weber and Delaney) as they stumble upon a town not on any map Rock and Roll Heaven, Oregon. There is a free concert every night, but the price of admission is high once the audience enters, it can never leave.

Teleplay by Richard Christian Matheson (Mobius, It Waits); based on the Short Story by Stephen King; directed by Brian Henson (Farscape, Muppet Treasure Island).

The Road Virus Heads North

Starring Oscar nominee Tom Berenger (Platoon, TNT's Into the West) and Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl, Frasier).

Teleplay by Peter Filardi (Salem's Lot, Flatliners); based on the Short Story by Stephen King; directed by Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (TNT's Into The West, Invasion, Taken).

Richard Kinnell (Berenger) is a famous writer who, at a doctor's visit, learns he may soon have to deal with his own mortality. On the drive back to his home, he buys a mysterious painting. Each time he looks at it, it changes to become more menacing and sinister. He pieces together that the painting is trying to kill him but not if he can destroy it first.

The trailer looks pretty weak to me, personally. That's why I say that.

Has anyone else seen it? Exactly what I expected based on the trailer... a b-level movie.

Marcia Gay Harden was especially over the top in this one.

Bump for those interested.

I just saw The Mist tonight...I have not read the book, so make of that what you will, but I had no preconcieved notions when I sat down to watch it.

I liked it...but it had about 3-4 blatantly amateurish moments, and debatably 3 or more in addition. If you can look past (what I consider to be) typical over the top King characters (at least in the movie versions), then you might enjoy it. If you have no idea what the storyline is about, I would suggest keeping it that way (dont even read the back of the DVD) if you are willing to live dangerously.

Nothing top notch about it...but very entertaining...in a "I am Legend" or "28 weeks later" sorta way. My tolerance for poor acting is a bit high, so YMMV.
