Just curious if anyone else had been playing City of Heroes? I was one of the masses allowed into their open beta period, and it really looks great. I think they may have the most successful release of any of the MMORPGs to date. It really is pretty cool to leap a building in a single bound. :)

I'll be waiting at least till the heroes versus villains expansion comes out, I hear that might be several more months. I don't find it that interesting to just fight thugs.

I think they are talking about early 2005 for the City of Villains expansion. My experience with PvP in MMORPGS makes me leary of that expansion, but since no one really knows what they are going to do implementation wise, I figure I will just wait till they divulge more information.

The Rikti invasion they had during the last day of Beta was fun. Motherships appearing in the sky, Rikti appearing all over the place. Lots of heroes getting their butt kicked. Good times.

I'm in the "2 1/2 day" head start right now and its mostly stable though I am still getting those annoying mapserver disconnects far too often.

But I get the "Bonehead move of the day" for preordering COH back in January then forgetting to update my credit card info with them when it changed a couple weeks ago. Order got processed with the old credit card info, didn't go through. They sent me an email which I didn't see for a few days. Called yesterday and apparantly I'm now at the back of the list for shipping it. D'oh!

I think it'd be fun to have a group of us start out together with new characters and wreck havoc on the evil gangs.

I'm considering. Can someone give me a breakdown of how the game is played?

Thomkal
04-27-2004, 10:41 PM
Well supposedly I'm supposed to get the game tomorrow-we'll see. Can't continue playing past tonight until I get it.

Grantdawg,

Breakdown hmmm? Hard to do without writing pages and pages.

1) Create your character in their very good costume/character creator, though of course it can always need more options. You also have to decide the archetype and origin of your powers-five possible choices for each category. If you wanted to be a mutant like Storm of the X-Men-you'd take mutation/controller. You then get to select from a group of five power categories for the archetype, and another for the origin. Each power category has about eight powers in them. You get a choice of one or two of the least powerful for each one. That gives you two powers to start with. The type of origin you choose determines your starting contact-the person you get missions from. Later on (starting with Level 6) you have a third group to choose powers from-the Power Pool-this is kind of a catch all of powers that don't fit the origin/archetype categories like Flight, Teleport, Leadership etc. You again have various powers to choose from in each power pool.

2) Go through the tutorial which does a good job of explaining the basics, but gets awfully boring once you've done it a few times. And you have no choice but to go through it with each character. But you do get to Level 2 by the end of it, so its worth doing.

3)After the tutorial you are sent to the city itself. Your trainer (almost every zone has a trainer) is there and they are the ones who raise your level, giving you either a new power or more enhancement and/or inspiration slots.

4) Go to your contact after the trainer to get your first mission. Rinse repeat.

Combat is made a bit more interesting with the addition of inspirations and enhancements. Inspirations are temporary usage bonuses of various sorts like healing, better chance to hit, etc. They don't last long. You get them as a reward from battles/saving citizens, or you can buy them. Enhancements are permanent modifications to your powers such as increase in range, damage, healing power, etc. They are obtained the same way. They have various levels of enhancements.

5) Getting tired of missions? You can just patrol the streets and fight street crime. The game is populated with various evil groups-such as street gangs like the Hellions and Skulls, Mechanical robots like the Clockworks, zombies and associates like the Vaz, magic using groups like Circle of Thorns, etc. You can find many of these mobs in various parts of zones doing things like breaking into a car, stealing a purse, and more. You can stop these crimes, and sometimes get an inspiration/enchantment reward from the victim (its cool because they say thank you for saving them when you do this in various ways) You can also (when high enough level) visit Hazard Zones, where large groups of mobs hang out and you'll need to group to stop them, and Task Forces (which I haven't done yet) where a group does a very long series of interconnected missions in one setting. You need to be a certain level to get into Hazard/Trial zones.

I think that pretty well covers it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thomkal did pretty well breakdown wise. I'll add that there is a wide variety of character types you can create. They all seem pretty effective to me so far, though I haven't gotten past 15th level with any of them. You really can spend hours playing with just the costume/character generator. It is fantastic. I think one of the best things I have noted so far is that they chose to make things easy...unlike EQ where for years you had to blow a half hour of real time to cross an ocean if you couldn't arrange for a port. If you want to move to another part of the city, go click on the train doors, and you pick the zone. One of the other things that make the game appealing to me, is the quick accessibility of the design. At least through the low teens it is very easy to log in, and immediately get down to business beating up the bad guys.

Something else...the design team really built the fun factor into the game. Flying is cool and cool looking, super jumping is worth the price of admission alone. There are lots of cool attack effects/animations as well, and more I am sure I haven't seen.

For me it has easilly become worth the $50 pricetag, and that is something I can't say about a lot of games lately.

I do wanna try this one, but right now im so addicted to FFXI Online that its hard to break away. Final Fantasy Online is by far the best mmorpg i have played -- the fact that it was in japan for a while before it came to US is prob why it is so bug free and thorough in nearly every area.

Got my copy of the retail version so I should be set to go whenever.

Hukarez,

I believe the price is $14.99/month. For that month you are getting a continously updated client sometimes with new content, other times with bug fixes and the like. Unique to COH you also get a monthly comic book based on the current in-game state at the time.

I'm ready whenever to create a new character on whatever server the majority of us wants to play on. Just let me know.

The stability of the game has been ok to good. Today for instance I had one or two mapserver disconnects but they were brief and I didn't lose the connection to the game. It was getting a bit laggy near the end of my time there though.

One suggestion I can make is to make sure you have updated video drivers-my computer's performance with the game really improved when I did that. The latest Direct X version (9.0 b) is supposed to help too.

Grantdawg if you let me know what server/character name you have I can create a new character and join you later tonight.

A lot of people I know from Dark Age of Camelot are going to Virtue, if it makes any difference. Good of place to go as any.

Thomkal
04-28-2004, 06:25 PM
Virtue is the unofficial Role-playing server, not that I've seen much of it on my time there. It's as good as any other, but I would probably recommend the servers that just came up today Liberty and Infinity (and one other I'm forgetting). Will likely have less stress on them so less lag and such.

Glengoyne
04-28-2004, 07:03 PM
I'll second the video driver update thought as well as the sound card update. In fact I thought I had updated to the latest sound drivers and I had real inconsistent disconnects. At one point I couldn't play one character, but had access to all the others. So I ran one of them to the spot where I was continually disconnecting, and dropped immediately. I put two and two together, and thought that maybe there was some sound I was hearing there, that was unique. I found an updated sound driver for my built in sound card, about six months more recent that the one I was using, and voila near seamless gameplay.

GrantDawg
04-28-2004, 10:20 PM
I have the latest drivers. It was a really strange crash where I was talking to a "contact" and the screen turned grey. I couldn't get it to do anything else so ended up having to force the program to shut down.

I'm sure it is my problem though (if there is ever a problem no one can figure out, I'm the one having it). :)

Snowblinder, an Ice/Ice blaster created on Freedom and running through the tutorial right now. You can email people in the game, but you get no word of receiving an email at any point during the game. Just so you'll have to check them. You can do a /whoall to see who's in your zone, or a tell (character name), (the comma is supposed to be there) to talk to them if they are online. Hit the backspace key to send a reply to the person who just tell'ed you.

Freedom is not actually a new server now that I think of it. It was the original server for the beta test Prime, renamed Freedom. I realized that when I saw level 17's this morning and I thought that odd for the second day of the server's existence. :) So I don't know if we want to stay there or not. The other servers Shkspr mentioned are new as well as the two I mentioned.

How doesn't it work on your computer and what drivers are insufficient?

Jeeber,

Where did you download the game from? I thought the retail version was only available via stores not download.

How doesn't it work on your computer and what drivers are insufficient?

I bought it through www.CityofHeroes.com. You can download the game through PlayNC...

The game will start up initially, but after I agree to the user agreement and it tries to start up the game itself, I get a message that says:

"Your driver or card doesn't support GL_ARB_texture_compression"

I press OK (my two choices are "OK" or "Copy to clipboard") and then a different error message pops up. This one says:

"Detected driver or video card is unsupported
32MG ATI Rage 128 Ultra
The game my run poorly or not at all with your current configuration.
Current system requirements are NVidia GeForce 2 or better or ATI Radeon 8500 or better. (If your card does meet the minimum requirements, you may not have the latest drivers. Go to www.nvidia.com or www.ati.com to update your driver. In some cases, such as laptops, you may need to get the latest drivers from your computer manufacturer.)
Do you want to continue?"

If I press no, the games closes. If I press yes, it works for a few seconds then a get an error report that says:

"City of Heroes has encountered a problem and needs to close." You can then send an error report if you want to. I haven't done so yet...

I've gone to ATI.com to try and update my driver, but I'm having issues with that as well. I'll download an update, but when I try to install it it says that it can't find the .exe file or something...

This is rather frustrating, and after spending the money on this game I don't have the cash to go out and buy a new video card or whatever...

Thomkal
04-29-2004, 06:08 PM
Jeeber,

Hmmm learn something new everyday-didn't realize you could download it.

I certainly understand the frustration with a game not working. Sadly I'm not very computer tech savvy. Did you try posting on their support board and see if others with the same video card can help? From what I recall reading though, COH does pretty well require a certain level of video card to work normally. A GeForce 2, or ATI Radeon 8500 should be pretty cheap these days though if you can scrape up the money for one.

Sorry you are having such problems.

I wish they had a trial of this game. I know that there are the "free" 30 days, but you have to pay the $50 or whatever for the game first. I just can't bring myself to put out that much for this game just to try it out for a month. I may love it, but if I don't, I'll feel like a waste of money. I picked up WWII Online for $6 at Big Lots, and I hated it, but I had a month to figure that out, so I was only out the $6. I guess I won't be playing City of Heroes yet.

SI,

Yeah I understand why people can't afford to play MMORPG's. These days I'm not finding a whole lot of other games out there I want to play, so the gaming budget can fit in one. :)

But if you are a superhero junkie like me, its really worth the money after such a long line of failed superhero games (other than Freedom Force)

sterlingice
04-29-2004, 11:22 PM
I loved the Freedom Force demo- played the heck out of that level. I should pick that up since it's probably in bargain bins everywhere now. Hm.. I don't have much on my gaming plate right now, but after having bought a digital camera, I figured I'd better cut back.

Also, I bought 3 games exclusively for summer because of good deals that wouldn't last (Beyond Good and Evil for only $20 and the buy Prince of Persia, get Splinter Cell free deal) so I've got stuff to play. Plus I need to finish 4 games I've started on and never finished all the way (Mario Sunshine, Eternal Darkness, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and Pokemon Colosseum). And this paragraph is probably more than anyone really cared to know.

04-30-2004, 08:09 AM
It's fun, but you have to pay attention to who you fight.. you may get caught fighting guys 5 levels higher then you, and that usually means a quick trip to the hospital and the loss of some XP.

(And Thom, I didn't see your warning till AFTER the guy hit me for the first 29 point damage hit. Ooops :))

I'll be on tonight around 6 oclock, besides running the FOFC FBCB Sim, I have a feeling I'll be pulling an all-nighter.

Some of the Martial Arts moves are fun to see (my guy, Kang Chan is a Scrapper with the mighty Storm Kick, Cobra Strike and Focused Fighting :))

Everybody should post the name of the character they want to use for our FOFC teamups here on Freedom server and then try not to play them solo a lot so we can stay generally the same level. Though they do have a sidekick option to help with large differences in levels.

I haven't really been here much because I have been kicking nazi tail on the Virtue server with Fozzie and company. Well ok I really haven't met up with him yet, but I do play on that server. I am Shalalagh a Gravity Controling Storm Summoner. So far I am level 12, and I whole heartedly agree that this game rocks. It is a wonderful change of pace from other MMORPGs. I am having a ball, and pissing off the wife.(and I have a very understanding wife).

In any case any of you on Virtue post your names here. It would be great to get together sometime. Anyone start the FoFC super group?

Mmm hmm.

Alright. So here's the thing. I log on, there's Fozzie. I group up with him and a bunch of other people. We kill things. It is good.

Now. Our beloved Fozzie takes it upon himself to run straight at not one, not two, but oh, around a dozen fairly difficult enemies. By himself. In approximatly 2 seconds, his ass is on the floor. Needless to say, we give him a little shit, and that's that.

Of course, when he proceeds to perform the Fozzie Death Charge approximatly half a dozen times during the course of our killing spree, one has to wonder just what in the holy hell thiis sick fuck is thinking. Let's go back and take a look at one of these moments in CoH history!

Fozz: "Evil lurks ahead! Slay them!"
Group: "Indeed! Is everyone read...."
Fozz: "ROARRRRRR!"
Fozz: *splat*
Group: "..."
Group: *proceed to calmly and cooly Slay Evil, with the body of their insane friend on the ground*

Ahh, a model superhero, that Fozz. I can already hear children whispering the name of the legendary Doomed Superhero. :)

Hoping to catch up with you guys sometime tomorrow. Mostly went solo tonight, although I had a run with Thomkal and someone else (don't have the hero/FOFC name chart handy) for about 30 minutes. Getting ready to leave the friendly confines of Atlas as I'm approaching level 6. The game is getting much more interesting now that my dude with zero range attacks is getting better at hand-to-hand.

OK I'll be out there playing this afternoon. I'll either be Shalalagh(level 12 controller) or Chernobyl 235(level 5 defender). I also made a scrapper named Claimore and a Blaster Caoimhe. Both of them just fresh from the tutorial. I am gonna have to make a list of all your guys handles so I can friend ya.

I forgot to mention the other day one of the coolest innovations they came up with for this game. The sidekick. A higher level hero(over level 11), can ask any other hero to be their sidekick. No matter what level the lower level hero is, they temporarilly become one level lower than the hero they are 'kicking for. They get all the hitpoints of that level, and the powers they have perform at that higher level. They still gain experience, it is just reduced to the amount of experience someone their actual level would be getting. I don't know if I explained that well enough for you to understand, but the point is that if someone starts the game and has a friend with a character in the teens they can play together.

In any case I will start making a list, and be out looking for folks this afternoon say 2:00 Pacific.

On Virtue I'm Ramsack. I die a lot.

I'm not a comic-book fan, I despised every MMORPG i've played but I am having a BLAST playing this. It is especially fun to skulk around with the folks from here.

Like CoffeeWarlord mentioned, it may get stale after 3 months or so, but for now I have already squeezed the $50 worth from the game.

Unlike in EverQuest, for example, COH makes it fun to scrap around for your first 4-6 levels. In EQ, you spent your first few levels killing spiders, polar bears, and whatnot. In COH, you are patrolling the city looking for purse-snatchers, car vandals, and general hooligan. The effects are really, really good and the character system probably guarantees no 2 characters will ever be the same.

See you on Virtue!

It's not the first game to do it to me. Unreal Tournament did it to me years ago. Morrowind used to do it to me, but I seemed to get past that. I will give CoH another shot tomorrow night to see how I react, but if I start getting the woozies within 45 minutes of playing, I know I don't stand a chance.

Sorry to hear that Pumpy :(

If everyone puts the characters listed here on their friends list (command is /friend superhero name, like /friend Blizz, you can see who from the FOFC is online at any given time, and if they come online while you are online. You can also talk in friends chat (click the little F near the bottom of the chat window. This would make getting together much easier than a "Any FOFC'ers on?" broadcast into the deepening dark.

Also should we consider forming a supergroup now that some of us are high enough level to start one?

And Uncle Morty is one scary clown let me tell you.

We definitely need healers. Is anyone a healer so far? I was thinking of creating one to play from time to time with FOFC when I wasn't playing Blizz, but I would need to catch up in levels big time if I do so.

Once you start venturing into the large enemy group areas, you will see why Coffee Warlord mentions DEFENDERS. Without them, a group is essentially doomed to die.

So please, if you are the nurturing type choose Defender and learn to Resurrect ASAP! Even if you aren't nurturing, you will be the life of any party if you choose defender. They are scarce as Element 115.

Yeah, doesn't matter as long as FOFC is in there somewhere. Do you think it would be nice if SkyDog could add a forum for us under Hattrick and PC/Console Section? It would be nice to have one place for us to assemble online, yet out of the game.

To anyone thinking about checking the game out I'll add another tease.

If you've played an MMORPG, you will know that in the vast majority of them (planetside being an exception) the combat is point, click, yawn. Not so here. The devs of COH know fun and watching group on group action (:)) is nothing short of spectacular. It is still a bit point and click, but somehow they've managed to not make it boring.

The visuals (on a good enough pc, i'd imagine) are beautiful. The models are so well done, I couldn't imagine them being any better. The animations are also top notch and I couldn't imagine them being any better as well.

This game may actually prompt me to go and check out a few comic books. Here's to hoping they figure out how to add features to make it even better in the months to come.

To Virtue and BEYOND! (campiness welcome :D)

FOFC Justice League

Not very creative, but it fits in line with the milieu. I made the team colors Yellow and black, but if I can change them, I'll make them yellow and maroon in honour of the board color scheme.

A bunch of us are already on the team and if you want in, simply find me, let me know via /tell (so it is private) who your are from the board so we can keep this "in the family" so to speak.

You can only join 1 Super Group per alt, so keep that in mind.

[edit - oh, i guess it would be nice if I posted my alt on Virtue. Ramsack. To make it easy, simply do a '/friend Ramsack' that will add me to your friends list so we can communicate easily.]

BTW.. yay! My new defender type Green Gale (Tried Green Nightengale, but it was ONE character too long. BAH) hit level 8 last night, thanks to a run with the FOFC crew).

Hover and energy blasts = fun. Hovering above the action where you won't get "accidental" hits from the thugs and throwing energy blasts down. My favorite is a wave energy blast that has the ability to possibly knock down the target as well as damage them. If you get knocked down by my power wave, then one of the scrappers/tanks will just finish you off.

if any of the crew need healing, i Just turn hover off.. throw a healing aura (all within a few feet get 25 HP or so back) until all ok, and then turn hover back on and float out of the quagmire ;)

Wait till you see the knockback effect of one of Ramsack's punches :) (Ka... BLAM!)Indeed. Being a blaster with hover and energy blast is a ton of fun. I've perfected leaping and hovering simultaneously to really shoot me up in the air at the start of hostilities. Once I slap them with my 2 ranged attacks, I drop down and melee them with my punches which I've enhanced with knockback. God this game is fun.

I moved The Black Fedora to Virtue and recreated him as a Defender/Healer. I figure if we each have a Defender, we can take turns at healing duties.

Jeeber, when you initially install and run the program it will pull the patch down to your system.

Hope to catch up with you this weekend once the graphics card is ready to go.

Awesome, thanks!

According to Fedex.com the estimated arrival time of my disk is 4:30pm tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have a Cinco de Mayo pool party that one of my friends if throwing to go to around the same time.

Hopefully I'll be up and playing with you guys by Thursday afternoon at the latest... :)

I think someone should name their hero The Spanish Inquisition! That way, you can always say "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!" whenever you meet another group. That joke would never get old.

i have been playing every type of hero with different powersets to try to get a "feel" for them.

I am liking tankers alot(something about killing a group of guys shrugging your shoulders and jumping into another group)

I am suffering from cronic reroll syndrome. I can get to level 4 in a blink of an eye though.

I don't even recall all the current characters and their names i have but i do have 1 of each of the 5 types

One aspect of CoH that I find very interesting is the amount of variation you see. I understand that with all the choices in character creation that was the dev's goal, but I figured you would see all tall, muscular superman-like heroes. This isn't the case. Not sure where I was going with this... just liking the fact that the diverse choices are being excercised.

I have yet to join a team where any 2 body types were even the same, let alone an outfit. Even powers (having far less variation than character stuff) are spread across the spectrum. I am always seeing new powers being used. Great stuff.

You're welcome and not a problem. I keep in mind that when somebody doesn't respond to a hail:

a) they may be AFK
b) they may not see the hail
c) they may be in the middle of conflict
d) [add your reason here]

just an FYI, to see the super group members only, there is a Supergroup "button" above the chat window that, when pressed, shows the group and all their stats (3 from left IIRC next to Team and Friends). Then, at the bottom of the chat window, one of the buttons is to talk in the supergroup channel.

Blizz, Ill Blood, Carl Bistro and myself went on a mission last night and had a great time. Bistro cracked me up with his war cry. Something about being "sassy". We kicked some Vahzilok ass and made the city a little safer. I have a screen shot of us that i will post tonight.

Here is a review that describes my feelings of the game almost exactly...

http://pc.ign.com/articles/511/511429p1.html?fromint=1

As I spend more and more time with the game and things get a bit more repetitive, the main thing keeping me clicking the icon on my desktop to start the game is the getting together with friends from here.

If I had picked the game up on my own and had to scrap for teammates every time I entered the game, I wouldn't be having near as much fun. With that said, i'd like to thank each and every FOFCer that has made the experience my best MMO game to date.

[having my wife walk in on my sessions is still a bit uncomfortable as she sees and hears me having fun with a 7 foot guy with ram horns and tights. And the other night, I let my 4 year old help me on a mission by letting her point out the bad guys and click the number keys to shoot 'em down.]

That's a job, not a Job. There's a diffference ;)

btw, to do a tell (confusing I know..)

It's /tell <playername>, <message>

Can anyone outline the character creation options for me?

About how many power combinations are there?
Can you customize your SFX?
How about apperance?

Thomkal
05-06-2004, 07:04 PM
Sachmo,

You can not customize your SFX alas. As for your appearance once created you cannot change it (except if you are a member of a supergroup-you can change back and forth between the supergroup's uniform and your own costume). Cryptic has talked about adding a "supertailor" so people can pay influence to change their appearance, but that hasn't happened yet.

However you have a wide wide variety of character/costume creation options. Its broken down into several different body parts, and each part has a number of different options. You can keep the same option for many of the body parts or do something totally different with each one. You read various reviews where they say they haven't seen two costumes totally alike yet, and that's pretty close to the truth. There are so many different shades of colors to choose from plus various chest icons etc etc, that you won't ever be lacking for ideas for a costume. And I'm sure they will add to the options there over time.

Power combinations. Not exactly sure what you mean here, but you start out with a primary power group and a secondary power group in your specfic archetype. There are five different archetype and five or six different power groups in each to choose from at the start. Starting at Level 6 you have the option of a third group of powers to choose from, the power pool. You don't ever have to take a power from them if you want. Each primary and secondary group have about 9 powers in them to choose from each time you are given the chance to get a new one. Power pools have four each I think.

My character in the FOFC group is a mutant blaster with ice blast as my primary power group with 9 different powers in that initial set, though I only get a choice of the first two to begin with. His secondary group is ice manipulation with 9 different powers I can get there eventually but only a choice of one to begin with. At level 6 I took the flight power pool, and picked hover, leaving me three other powers I might choose later.

Many of the powers in each power group work together, like I can freeze a guy to keep him from me, then blast from a distance, which is what blasters do. :)

Does that help any?

One strange thing I've noticed, how come you can't have capes on your character? What's strange is that both the thugs and civilians will refer to superheroes as "capes" but you can't actually have a cape.

Shkspr
05-07-2004, 12:09 AM
Capes are coming. It's tough for the programmers to build them so they look realistic in the game, and they opted to have someone work on them after launch so that they didn't half-ass them ingame.

Found this on the CoH boards. It's a dev comment about the first update:

I'm sure many of you are curious what we're adding to the game and when...so I thought I'd talk generally about our first update content. I'm not going to get too specific here, because we're still working on stuff and things might change a little in production. We're aiming for an update a month or so in - again, we're aiming for a month, but things might slip. But anyway, here's the scoop...

1.Opening up levels 41 to 50 - the cap at release is 40 - this opens it up to 50 (where it'll stay for a little bit). Naturally, this means new contacts, Enhancements, tasks and story arcs.

2.Two new zones - One zone is the HQ of the Portal Corporation, where they house the top secret "Project Looking Glass." You'll see that this has enormous ramifications for the game background as well as gameplay. The other zone is a crash site for one of the Rikti base ships. It remains a constant war zone between the military and the Rikti.

3.Three New Villain Groups - The mysterious Malta Group. The macabre Carnival of Shadows. And the immensely powerful Praetorians.

4.Two Trials - These are two repeatable tasks that a group of heroes can undertake for a special Enhancement reward.

5.Tailor - Give players the ability to change their costume for an Influence cost. But there may be a little more to this system...so keep your eyes peeled.

6. New Mission "Interactivity" - As some have noted on these boards, players would love to do "more" on missions. Ya asked for it - ya got it! I'll give you a taste of one of these features: if heroes are defeated in some 5th Column bases, they'll wake up in a cell instead of a comfy hospital! The hero will need to knockdown the cell door, overcome the guards and find his way back to his teammates. Plus, you never know what kind of allies you can make in the 5th Column's jails...Anyway, that's just a tease of several features we'll be adding into the mission sets.

Not a bad first update if i must say so myself.
