This is a continuation of this thread 2006 Yahoo Fantasy Baseball (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=47180), specifically for the one league.

Current Notes
*Draft underway!
*Draft Spreadsheet: http://www.sunflower.com/~sterlingice/fofcdraft.htm (http://www.sunflower.com/%7Esterlingice/fofcdraft.htm)
*Draft board in post #2

I'm thinking of starting the "slow live" draft on Monday with the following rules:
1) You have 24 hours to make your pick. However, try to take less than that as if everyone takes that much time, it will be 3 seasons from now before we finish the complete draft. Try to check every morning and night, particularly if you know your pick is coming up.
2) I will try and maintain a spreadsheet with the picks, making them easier to keep track of and host it on my own site. That will be posted once we start.
3) If you know you're going to be gone and might miss a pick (ie you could pick in any 24 hour period so no "I didn't think the draft would get back to me"), you can either email me a list or designate a proxy in the thread (I nominate "User X" to pick for me). Probably best to use someone not in the league so that there is no potential conflict of interest.
4) If you go 24 hours without a pick, you will get the highest player left on the board on the Yahoo O-Rank at that time, regardless of position, injury status, etc. We have to be unbiased about this automated process. Once the 24 hours are up, either I will post the pick if I'm on or another player may post it as "List Pick" for that team so that we can proceed with the draft. I trust that list picks will be honest unless we have problems (ie "I want the next person on the O-Rank list so I'll say the next person instead in the thread and pick the other guy").
EDIT: 4A) Here's an updated list of the O-Rank that players will be chosen off of if we have to "cpu pick": website (http://www.sunflower.com/%7Esterlingice/yahoo.htm). And here are some general notes about it: post (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showpost.php?p=1075437&postcount=247).
5) If you miss 2 picks in the draft, you are out and another owner will replace you with your currently drafted team and continue drafting from there.

A couple of notes from another post:
A last couple of things before the draft:
* Draft picks go in this thread.
* There is no trading of picks but you can trade players picked, of course. So, if you want to give up 1.1 and 2.12 for 1.12 and 2.1, you just trade those players who were picked but you have to wait until we finish the draft.
* The clock for the first pick officially starts at 12:01am CT Monday morning. However, if Simms (and anyone else, in order) wants to make their picks, they're free to. However, any pick made before 12:01am will count as a pick made at 12:01 for the purposes of having a late pick. So, if Simms picks at 9:35pm CT and Ramzavail picks at 9:40pm CT but CleBrownsFan doesn't realize we've started early, he still has until 12:01am Tuesday before the list picks for him. This, of course, only counts for the first day- we're just assuming any early picks are at "12:01" so no one gets screwed by us starting early. So, in short, you can start early but we aren't going to penalize anyone for it. Ok, this was part of the reason for avoiding trades- we've gotten to a pick and now everyone has to wait for a trade rather than picking and moving along. So I guess we do kindof allow trades as there was one earlier in the day despite the "no trades allowed" unless there are objections.

So, here's the deal: if you post about waiting for a trade, you have an hour to complete the trade. You still have your full time to pick (24 hours) but if you're around and posting for a trade, you should be looking for what player to pick not "holding the draft hostage" until you get a deal. You can still always trade players after the draft.
Old News

Check the stat categories, rules, etc. Do we need to change up one of the categories? How about the minimum IPs? Too many bench positions? We gotta figure these things out in the next couple of days *before* the draft.

Everyone who is in the league, post here as a "check in" and if you have some thoughts about the rules, go ahead. We'll debate them for the next couple of days and see what needs to be changed.

Good question- how does random number generator and me rolling a d12 work? There's no nice way to verify if I did it, tho. Is there any other method that people prefer? It's a snake draft so it ends up being fair in the end, but I, like I'm sure most people, prefer some spots to others.

In order for this to be considered a Hardcore league you would need more teams to increase the difficulty of the league.

12 teams for a league where you get both National and American league players seems a little Soft to me.

Oh well... no biggie. That is what is happening- it is random, tho I guess I didn't explain it very well. I have a list of numbers 1-12 in random order that I rolled up yesterday afternoon and whereever your number is, that's where you pick (so, if the #10 was first, you'll pick first, if it's last, you pick last, and anywhere between, well, you get the idea).

Ok, if the other team doesn't check in, he gets booted and I'll PM Ramzavail. If anyone else decides they want to drop out or if he doesn't PM back by Sunday night, the spot is bub's.

Keep in mind- you have to pretty much check the draft at least twice a day and these usually take 3-4 weeks. If you're not willing to do that, please get out now- we don't need a bunch of people who will be "Oh, that guy, we're waiting on him again".

Also, I don't suppose everyone has some form of IM so we can keep in touch quicker?

Ok, whipped up a little spreadsheet where all I have to do is enter a player and position and everything else automatically updates. I'll try to update as fast as I can during the draft. BTW, if a player has more than one position, I'll just put the one he "best" fits at- it's not as if he is limited to just the one position but I didn't want to do the extra work on the spreadsheet to allow for multiple positions.

The link is in the top post.

Again, any last minute thoughts on the rules? Should we go RF, CF, LF rather than 3 OF? Change the stat categories? Put squirrels in the pants of the 12th place finisher?

SI

RF,CF,LF is hardcore, I like that.

Edit: How about a cap on waiver moves? It's more difficult to worry about a cap then it is to make daily transactions every day.

MizzouRah

Personally, I just like 3 OF's.

I prefer pick #12 myself or #1, but middle of the pack should be interesting.

Simms
02-19-2006, 10:44 AM
Separate OFs is hardcore, yes, but there is a very uneven distribution of talent across the three positions, and injuries can fuck you hard. From experience, I *hate* LF/CF/RF and would much prefer to go with 3 OFs. But I'm in no matter what, so if mine is the minority opinion, so be it.

It keeps people from just sitting back and grabbing super OFs in the 3rd, 4th, 5th round after all the talent from other positions is off the table because of a dearth of talent. Basically, gives some positional scarcity to the outfield, too (particularly CF), so the first two rounds aren't just elite pitchers and positional scarcity guys.

That said, so far there have only been a couple of people to chime in. I'd be curious to see what others think before making any rule change.

I have no preference on the OF ruling, either way is fine. The challenge of the LF/CF/RF is appealing but at the same time stressful (injuries and such).

I have no preference on the OF ruling, either way is fine. The challenge of the LF/CF/RF is appealing but at the same time stressful (injuries and such).

Ditto for me.

sterlingice
02-19-2006, 09:29 PM
Billay said in hattie chat that he was in favor of OF versus LF/CF/RF. Since there are only a couple of us who want the change, I'll just leave it as is. So that finalizes the rules barring some freakish thing that we unanimously decide to change.

Make sure you familiarize yourself with them. Keep in mind the categories (R, HR, RBI, SB, FPCT, AVG, OBP, SLG, W, L, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, K/BB, K/9)- I think they're a pretty solid set both traditional and sabermetric. Maybe one or two too many rate stats for the pitchers and not enough counting stats, but that's balanced by the fact that you *must* have 40 IP per week or else you take a loss in all 8 categories so you need depth on your pitching staff and not just a couple of aces. Those are the only two "weird" things, I think. If you've done a football league with me- it's not like that where I run a 40/15/10 yardage split, 2 QBs, and a couple of other things to try and even positions out.

People have started posting their IM info on the message board in the league. It'd be good if everyone can do it there (bots can't harvest it since it requires login in the league to view). If you're up, expect to get an IM from me. It'll just be some reminder like "your pick is up"- I'm not trying to badger people but sometimes in a draft like this, you just forget to check.

Does anybody want to trade up to 6? I am looking at the 8,9,10 spot to trade down to. Any takers?Ok, this was part of the reason for avoiding trades- we've gotten to a pick and now everyone has to wait for a trade rather than picking and moving along.

I didn't see the "no trades are allowed", I saw this:

There is no trading of picks but you can trade players picked, of course. So, if you want to give up 1.1 and 2.12 for 1.12 and 2.1, you just trade those players who were picked but you have to wait until we finish the draft.

Which is why I said Ramzavail picked Pujols and put the player was going to me after the draft is over.

Ramzavail should have put Troy Trojans select 1(6) Mark Teixeira 1b (goes to Jockitch)

That way there is no confusion. I just wanted to post the total trade so everyone would see what we did when the players move teams later on.

I think as long as your within your time to pick, you should seek a trade if you want to. Trades will only be for the beginning of the draft, I would assume to get the one player you really want.

I think as long as your within your time to pick, you should seek a trade if you want to. Trades will only be for the beginning of the draft, I would assume to get the one player you really want.I dunno, I've sat through a draft back when Sandbox has slow, live drafts and the commish allowed trades via email. Well, there was this one guy who was never happy with his pick so he was always trying to trade down when his time came, making everyone else wait the 23 hours before he picked because "someone might want to trade". We got started almost a week into the season because of that.

That's why the choice is basically "a short time limit" or we'll just go back to "not at all" for trades. Of course, I can't know if you're being smart and make a trade and leave no fingerprints until after the draft. However, we do only have about a month to do this draft so we have to get through about a round a day because there are sometimes people who have to go away or just completely miss their pick so 24 hours elapses with 0 picks, much less rounds. We'll just never finish if even one person is constantly holding everyone else up.

The idea is that if you want to work a deal, do it before your pick. If it's your pick and you can pick but choose not to, it's just not fair to everyone else.

Man, this is the second time I've had someone stolen right before a pick, so, with that little change in mind, I'll go with maybe a tad of a reach but I don't want him on someone else's team (ie one of those who I'm almost certain will outperform his draft position) and go with:

;)Yeah, that's kindof where I'm at, too. Yes, I have a spreadsheet. No, I can't share it because, frankly, I did the legwork for it and it's what I'm using so I don't want to share it with someone else just so they can snatch up all my picks.

What I typically do is just print out a couple of lists and check off as I go along with those.

Some of you may have seen me post in the past about the Fantasy magazines put out by the company I work for (http://www.fantasysports.ca). Well, our Baseball preview was released today, and is available for free download if anybody's interested.

It's PDF, 197 pages, full-color, and download only. (We do a printed newsstand version of the hockey mag, but it's the only one big enough to warrant the additional production costs at the moment.)

At any rate, if you want a copy, you can get one here: http://magazine.forecaster.ca/baseball2006/

A little under 2 hours to go :(

I just went and made a list of the top 200 of Yahoo using O-Rank so i can use it to see who gets autopicked if he doesn't make a pick. I'll post that in a bit, once I finish some other stuff, since Ramzavail was looking for a list of that ilk.

SI

sterlingice
03-06-2006, 04:45 PM
Ok, posted a list on my page with the Yahoo list. The first column is Yahoo O-Rank (that which is used to make "cpu" picks for the draft). For example, in a little over an hour, Troy Glaus will be picked for BigMac'sSpecialSauce as he's the top player on the list not already taken. The second column (FOFC HardC) is this draft, the third (FOFC SoftC) is the draft from last night in the other FOFC league. The colors don't really mean anything- they're a "tiering" of sorts (1-30 blue, 31-60 red, 61-120 magenta), part of my larger spreadsheet where this was taken from. I'll try to keep this updated and put some info about it in the top post.
