no restrictions about say my "justice minister" having to actually have been a justice minister? living and dead?

Only limitation is you can't pick more than two people from the same country.
I guess I was wrong about learning something from the previous draft.
:sigh:
Edit: Unless I'm misreading this. Are you saying once a country is picked by anyone, it is eliminated?

No, the limitation is only for each participant. So with 12 participants, that means 24 people from one country could potentially be picked.

No restirctions at all. It'll be up to you to make your case to the voters.
If you want to make Bush a scientist or Clinton an athlete, then by all means go ahead.

For instance, if we needed to increase that to 4 per country, or say half the picks have to be pre-20th century and half post-20th century. Give me your ideas.

FWIW - My thought is that the draft is too wide open, not too restrictive. I would eliminate a country if he's picked. Or, if you're worried about limiting TOO much, then I would say two times in the entire draft a country can be picked.
Or like you said limit on time periods. Something. To me part of what these drafts were built on were interesting restrictions that make it hard to come up with picks in the later rounds, rather than picking things that could have been good picks in round 2 (like the movie draft).
larrymcg421
05-12-2009, 10:36 AM
Okay, how about one per country per category? So if someone picks Lincoln as ruler, then no one else could pick another American in that category, but they could still pick say, Babe Ruth, as athlete.
DaddyTorgo

increase it to 4 per country in the entire draft and say half of a players picks have to be pre 1850!

Great idea. I was thinking something like this would make a fun draft.
Some random thoughts:
How do you count a person who is born in one country but did their thing in another?
How are older regions/kingdoms/empires going to count?
i know this is a people driven draft, but how about adding some geography? maybe a natural beauty and a man made icon.

That's a good question. My initial thought is that when the pick is made, then you have to declare a modern country that the pick is being used for, and it should be a country that was part of (or located in) whatever empire the person did their thing in.
And it could be up to the voters to judge if a person was picked for the right country, as long as the person does have some connection to the country. For example, we had the history draft and Joe Louis was picked for the 60s or something like that. I wouldn't forbid such a pick, but leave it up to the voters to do the punishment.
i know this is a people driven draft, but how about adding some geography? maybe a natural beauty and a man made icon.
Excellent idea. I'll add those.

A few notes:
1) I notice I've been saying post-20th century, which is pretty stupid. I clarified it in the original post, but it looks like people already figured out what I meant anyways.
2) Be careful about announcing picks that you think are eliminated. While I'm sure no one is going to select Keynes as an athlete, there are others that could possibly fit multiple categories.
3) As I noted to DT earlier, the person does not have to have actually performed this duty at any point in history to be selected. It's up to you to make your case to the voters as to why someone would be good.

Not to get into a tangent religious discussion, but I picked him solely on his historical existence & signifigance, not the man that Christianity believes him to be (son of god, etc etc). All faith-based arguments aside, he was quite possibly the most influential religious leader ... ever, such that one of the most widely known and practiced religions in history was formed around him.
I knew it was possibly going to be controversial, but anything touching on religious beliefs is going to be.

It is also a point of emphasis that Jesus is one of three aspects of God called the Trinity. God made flesh.

Someone was going to pick him, and they were going to pick him early, and he will ring-ding-ding the voters and it's a great pick from every angle, no question. I just can't get past the fact that in a draft of humans, someone picks aspect of God, you know what I'm saying?
From your point of view, sure. We don't share the same beliefs, so we're coming from two quite different points of view, but whaddya gonna do. But, that said, I'm picking the historical, quite human figure, not the divine figure. I understand for many its hard to seperate the two, but again, and you said it...somebody was gonna pick him.

Galbraith was THE American economist from the 50's - 70's. Served in like 4-5 administrations, 2 Presidential Medal's of Freedom
John Kenneth "Ken" Galbraith, OC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_Canada) (October 15, 1908 – April 29, 2006) was a Canadian-American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian-American) economist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economics). He was a Keynesian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keynesian_economics) and an institutionalist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institutional_economics), a leading proponent of 20th-century American liberalism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_liberalism) and progressivism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressivism_in_the_United_States). His books on economic topics were bestsellers from the 1950s through the 1970s and he filled the role of public intellectual (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_intellectual) in this period on matters of economics.
Galbraith was a prolific author who produced four dozen books and over a thousand articles on various subjects. Among his most famous works was a popular trilogy on economics, American Capitalism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Capitalism) (1952), The Affluent Society (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Affluent_Society) (1958), and The New Industrial State (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Industrial_State) (1967). He taught at Harvard University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_University) for many years. Galbraith was active in politics, serving in the administrations of Franklin D. Roosevelt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_D._Roosevelt), Harry S. Truman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_S._Truman), John F. Kennedy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_F._Kennedy) and Lyndon B. Johnson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyndon_B._Johnson); and among other roles served as United States Ambassador to India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Ambassador_to_India) under Kennedy.
He was one of the few honorees who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_Medal_of_Freedom) twice. He received one in 1946 from President Truman and another in 2000 from President Bill Clinton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Clinton).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kenneth_Galbraith#cite_note-0) He was also awarded the Order of Canada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_Canada) in 1997[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Kenneth_Galbraith#cite_note-1) and, in 2001, the Padma Vibhushan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padma_Vibhushan), India's second highest civilian award, for his contributions to strengthening ties between India and the United States

2.7 Jim Brown - Athlete - 20th Century - USA
"If you thought Walter Payton was good, you should've seen Jim Brown."
When a Hall of Fame running back who is arguably one of the greatest of all time is dismissed in mention of another player, that second man must truly stand as one of the greats of all time.
But not only was he a football great, a punishing runner who also kicked extra points, he was a world-class athlete in lacrosse, and as, wikipedia notes, he excelled in basketball and track as well.
Although many of his records would later be passed by those with longer careers, he remains the 8th leading rusher of all time and is still the Browns' leading rusher. The most impressive fact of this?
He retired when he was just 29 years old.
Truly an athletic champion in every sense of the word.
