View Full Version : My Oakland Raiders looking great in preseason.

IIRC, the Lions came to Oakland the day of the game and had serious jetlag so that was part of the cause of them being flat that game.
Yes. It was Marinelli testing the resliance and character of his team. It was also the day after defensive line coach Joe Mullen decided it would be a good idea to strip down to his birthday suit, get into his car, and head to Wendy's for some biggie fries and a delicious frosty.
Hey. He was hot and he was hungry.
Those were good times.

The despressing thing about all of this is that this thread was started right after the Raiders spanked the Detroit Lions in the Lions' 3rd (Raiders' 4th) preseason game, 21-7.
Brooks looked deadly accurate and Moss was unstoppable. Brooks was 9/15 for 187 yards and 2 TDs in the first half and Moss had 3 catches for 102 yards and 2 TDs.
I would like to think that the preseason is meaningless, but so far the Lions have scored only 13 points in 2 games and QBs have completed 45-57 passes against them so far.
Not good times... :(
whats really sad is that beating the Lions in preseason will be the highlight of the Raiders entire season :D :p

Bye week must have been really hard on Joey Porter.
It's like you get used to getting to go to the circus every week and laughing at all the clowns. And then one week, your mom tells you that the circus is closed.
He probably watched that Aaron Brooks clip on youtube a few times and tried to get in the mood.
But you know it wasn't the same.

Impressive. 240 yards of total offense against the Browns. A crisp 68 yards passing. And 0 points after halftime. I think he was referring to the offensive coordinator, Tom Walsh.
Yep. Walsh coached some ridiculously poor college teams after his Raiders stint, but he hasn't been inolved with pro ball in ten+ years.
Next week it is the 49ers across the bay. Some quick Raiders stats for fun:
The Raiders are:
averaging 177 yards of total offense per game. They are averaging 70.3 passing yards per game. They have 37 first downs in 3 games. Of those, 8 came by penalty. They are averaging under 5 yards per pass attempt. Their completion percentage? Try 38%.
This isn't bad, this is taking things to an entirely new level.
Pumpy Tudors
10-02-2006, 12:37 PM
Maybe it's just me being a smug Broncos fan, but I think the Raiders are fun to watch right now. Many franchises (Arizona, Detroit, San Francisco, Cleveland, etc.) have had their share of pathetic teams in recent years, but they can be pretty painful to watch. It's fun to watch these Raiders be horrible, though. The 2006 Raiders may not be the worst team in NFL history, but they're the most entertaining terrible team I've ever seen. If someone has trouble understanding the phrase "it's so bad, it's good," they only need to watch this team.
With the new "flexible scheduling" that the NFL will do later this year, I hope to see the Raiders on national television every week in December. This has to happen.

I've been a Rams fan since 1968. Unfortunatly that does include the 1990's.
In the '90s the Rams had some good preseasons, IIRC they even went 4-0 once or twice. My reaction at the time was not "look out here come the Rams!" My reaction was "IT'S ONLY PRESEASON" I could still look at the team and realize they sucked.

Yes, but only 3 teams since 1992 ever made the playoffs after starting 0-3. [Chargers 1992 after going 0-4, Lions 1995, Bills 1998]. Think about that one instead. And that usually happened when the teams still looked good in their losses. To the contrary, Oakland has been el stinko.

I've tried to stay out of this, but jesus man, stop feeding the fire. There are some serious problems on the team yet you still insist on spouting your hyperbole. Give it a rest and stop looking at the Raiders through rose colored glasses.
It's fine to talk about the improved run game and how the defense and special teams had a bad day. It's fine to talk about how Andrew Walter was better than his stats. But please don't predict a turnaround at this point. That's as bad as starting a thread talking about the preseason.
I'm as bad as you believing in the preseason as some sort of measuring stick, but that's mostly because I didn't see any of the games other than the Eagles matchup where their first team destroyed us. I am getting rip because I believe in my team.
I know their not playing well after 3 games, but I have faith and hope they will turn it around. The season is still early.
You aren't getting rip(ped) because you believe in your team. You are getting rip(ped) because anyone who has watched more than 10 minutes of that offense play understands that it isn't going to get better anytime soon.
What do you think would happen to me if I hopped on here and said "The Browns are going to the playoffs. HUGE win this week. This team has some serious talent"?
Let me clue you in: The first thing that would happen is that 25 Browns fans would jump down my throat and tell me I was an idiot. (if there are indeed 25 Browns fans left) Then the fans of other teams would come in to watch the show and laugh their asses off. Bengals fans would probably be first in line throwing jabs.
Now jb, keep something in mind here, the Browns are the team that just beat the Raiders in Oakland. And I can promise you anyone predicting playoffs or some miracle turnaround for them would be mocked. And you think Oakland is going to be spared? Please.

Of course its frustrating to see them play like that.
But I bet I am not the only fan that tought the Raiders will be starting out better.
I am not going to turn my back on the Raiders.
Whats funny is that people make predictions all the time and are wrong sometimes too.
Lets see how they end up after 16 games, thats all I ask.
Don't bring up the Elmo prediction. Anyhow, I can agree that I thought they would start out a little bit better but that has been dashed with Andrew Walter starting. He's essentially a rookie QB and you can't believe that if he starts the whole season (which he should) that we'll even make the playoffs. At best, I think we can hope for a season that the 49ers are enjoying next year...well, at least up until yesterday.

would it be worse for the raiders to win 4-6 games and pick in the 5-12 range or go 1-15 and get the #1 pick?

Some of you guys probably go with the hotest team, once your team is not doing well. Thats not being a true fan to your team.
I've been a Dolphins fan for the last 25 something seasons. And my team has Choked. Every. Fucking. Year. Yet I still love them and root for them, partly because I am a masochist.
And I'm a Dolphins fan BECAUSE of the Raiders (for leaving). So that's why I hate them and root against them even if they faced a team full of nun-killers and baby-eaters.

You're getting ripped for a number of reasons:
1. You used a great preseason as a predictor for a great regular season, when it appears that they will actually have a miserable regular season. People are piling on in their subtle way to reinforce the message that 'Preseason records mean nothing.'
2. You used the Raiders, a team hated by many and an easy target.

Raiders | Moss continues to be critical of team
Tue, 3 Oct 2006 07:24:21 -0700
Steve Corkran, of the Contra Costa Times, reports Oakland Raiders WR Randy Moss continues to vent his frustration towards the organization. Moss said during a radio interview Monday, Oct. 2, he is not concerned with the team's struggles this season, as the organization, in Moss' opinion, does not appear committed to winning. "I'm not concerned about football right now," Moss said during the interview. "I'm loving life. I don't see anybody else having a concern, so why should I? There are negative things going on now. I'm not the only one unhappy."

1) I made predictions about every NFL team, including playoffs. Some will turn out right and some will turn out painfully wrong. That's life.
2) The Twins are the exception to the rule. But look at some of the things that helped propel them. A young stud in the bullpen moved into the starting rotation about the time they hit rock bottom. Although he ended the year hurt, Liriano started off 12-2 and the Twins went on a roll. Who is your Liriano? You think it's Ryan Walter? Is he the guy that is going to save your season?
3) Baseball second half surges are actually fairly common. It may not happen every year, but most years see a team or two make a second half charge. The Astros and A's have a habit of making those types of runs almost every year. It doesn't happen nearly as often in football.
4) It's not happening with the Raiders jb. The team is horrible. I've been saying it from day one, as have a lot of other people. Your problems are issues that are incapable of getting fixed overnight.
5) You are in for a really, really long year if you think this team is going to even win 4 or 5 games.

Not to turn this into a hockey thread, but I made a prediction that the New Jersey Devils would win the Stanley Cup last season. They went on a tremendous winning streak at the end of the season, narrowly won their division after leapfrogging over two teams who were great all year, and then swept one of those teams in the first round of the playoffs. It was looking like nobody could stop my Devils.
Then the second round happened. The Devils got completely shut down. They looked soft, they looked weak, they looked tired. The goalie, who is the rock of the team, seemed absolutely lost at times, and his teammates couldn't bail him out. The team wasn't terrible, but they had absolutely none of the spark that got them this far. The Devils lost the series, four games to one.
Anyway, with that said, I predict that the Devils will win last season's Stanley Cup.

While we're on the subject of bad predictions, I predicted that Culpepper was going to be The Man at QB this year and lead the Dolphins back to the playoffs.
Man, was I ever wrong and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
But on the other hand, at least there's Schadenfreude going on in the house. The Packers fan contigent, which includes most of the actives and pledges, take delight in mocking me over Culpepper's suckiness and the Dolphins' losing and I return the favour by poking fun at Favre and the trainwreck that is the Packers.

Disappointments
• OT Robert Gallery (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=6761) (Oakland): There are so many candidates on the Raiders' roster, it's difficult to single out one guy for dishonor, but Gallery certainly deserves some scrutiny. He's missed two of four games because of a calf injury, so in that regard, his grade should probably be an "incomplete." Alas, that same word pretty much describes Gallery's performance, not only this season, but over the first two-plus years of his career. Remember, the former Iowa star was the second overall choice in the 2004 draft, touted as one of the premier left tackle prospects in the last decade or more. But in his first two seasons, he wasn't good enough to beat out journeyman Barry Sims (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4913) for the primary pass protection spot, and started instead at right tackle. When coach Art Shell shuffled the composition of the line this spring, and moved Gallery to the left side, he was overmatched. The Raiders signed Gallery to a contract with a maximum value of $54.75 million and $14.5 million in bonuses in '04, and haven't gotten much return on that investment.

Sometimes jb crosses a line from oblivion that he's being made fun of, through anger that he's being made fun of, and rests, ever so briefly, in a state of awareness and appreciation of how silly he is, and he kind of joins in the fun a little bit. the raiders made a mistake in hiring art shell the first and second time. but is firing shell the answer- i don't think so. the raiders have one major problem that is going to be very difficult to correct- al davis. what the better and top college coaches have found out is that pro football owners have a major impact on their ability to win and this has made more and more good college coaches reluctant to move into the pro ranks. as owners go al davis is right up there with the worse. i have heard from sources close to the raiders that al davis subverts the authority of the coaching staff on a daily basis and certainly this is not going to be a secret from potential coaches.
the question is - how do you fire al davis? i was a pro football diehard and a fan of the 49ers. when that jerk york took over the team and i realized that no coach in the world was going to get the niners on the right track i completely lost interest in the pros.
when you are a supporter of a particular team and they are bought or inherited by a bad owner you are dead because the owner in pro football is the biggest determinant of success.
what should happen is that the head coach should hire and fire the owner. when that happens i will be back as a pro-football diehard- but not in this lifetime.
in the meantime saturday, college football and cal are my major interests and i don't miss pro football one bit. with the exception of oklahoma when is the last time you heard anything from a college president.

No kidding. In some way, it's like the pressure of playing Prairie View. You know the season is basically in shambles, but there's nothing like a rivalry game to get them up for a week. Fortunately, Randy Moss still holds some sway in the locker room, so he might be able to diffuse any attempt to get up for the game. :)
BTW, hell of a dropped TD pass by Moss in the 2nd quarter.
