View Full Version : Tiger Woods biggest mistake: getting married

His Nike deal is safe as his demographics won't really care much. But I think it really hurts his standing with other sponsors that target broader demographics.
I think what could get him are the ties to the pornstar. It's one thing to have an affair, it's another in the public's eye to be fucking pornstars behind your wife's back. Just makes him look like huge trash that could impact his image when it comes to wealthy people. Do you want the face of your luxury automobile to be a guy who cheated on his wife and mother of his children with a bunch of skanky chicks including a pornstar? Tiger sold well because while being a great golfer, he came across as high class. He's trailer trash now.

Looks like Gatorade is the first to jump ship. They are saying it isn't related to the recent events with Tiger, but who actually believes that? I sure as hell don't.

It has nothing to do with it. The plan to drop Gatorade Tiger was announced two days before the accident, just FYI.

If you read the whole article, they're just ending a line of drinks that was in his name and publicly announced two days before this all started., they're not dropping Tiger as a spokesperson.

Before the crash, not before the affair rumors. Someone could have been tipped off inside that this was not going to end well for Tiger from an image standpoint.

At the end of the day, I think Tiger will come out of this fine. He may lose some sponsors, but he wont lose Nike. He is Nike golf. I don't think Nike had a golfing line - at least not one of note - before Tiger Woods. He also IS golf. He's much larger than his sport. So, he'll continue to be a draw, probably now more than ever, in fact.
Other than his fellow golfers, who don't seem to like him all that much and are probably reveling in this whole mess, the "golf world" - fans, announcers, etc. - will embrace him when he returns. They will cheer him and shower him with praise for overcoming this very difficult time (even though it's one entirely of his own making). They will rally around "their" Tiger and in a few months this whole thing will blow over.
He may lose some of his non-golf sponsors, since he's become a total joke at the moment, but I don't think they will all totally abandon him and, after a year or so, some others will pop back up. This whole thing will definitely cost him more many than most of us will likely make in our lifetimes combined.
I agree with much of what you say, but I think he loses a lot of fans, certainly not all, maybe not even a majority but a significant number. I know my days of cheering for him are done.

I could see that. I was never a fan of his - nothing personal about Tiger, I'm just not a golf fan - but I certainly respected him as a talent (sort of the same way I felt about Michael Jordan). Now, however, I see him in a totally different light and I could see how fans would be even more strongly affected. It will be interesting to follow the long term effects of this.

I'm no longer a fan of him. No respect for him as a person any more which makes me not really care to follow his professional career any longer. Same thing with Jordan, Magic, and all the others that did things like this that are known to the public.

How much did he earn from Gatorade?
"In an official statement released Tuesday, the company said: “We decided several months ago to discontinue Gatorade Tiger Focus along with some other products to make room for our planned series of innovative products in 2010. We hope to share more about our 2010 plans soon.”
“Gatorade Tiger Focus” was launched last spring and was the only product to contain theanine, which is said to reduce mental and physical stress. The partnership was unprecedented because Woods received royalties from sales of the beverage, rather than a contractual amount for an endorsement."

Ditto.
Tiger Woods may be the greatest golfer of all time or whatever, but I honestly have zero interest in him or the sport.
Tiger has some low standards I mean if you're going to cheat at least she should be a 7 or better. I mean damn man you're Tiger Woods bitches would throw it at you just to say they did. George Clooney is the only sane man in America imo... why settle down when I am getting it for free?

Man, I like the Greenish-Gatorade TIGER Focus.
Regarding his marriage issues, guy is a complete joke. With Tiger's money, there should be no problems AT ALL in keeping one's mistresses on the down-low. Moronic. And god damn man, your wife is one of, if not the hottest woman on the planet, imo.
However, if the reports of his addiction to narcotic pain-killers are true, I hope he gets all the help he needs(and it would certainly explain his ridiculous choices over the past few years). This addiction stretches from the richest of the rich to the poorest of the poor, and it's fairly similar to a heroin addiction. I became addicted to the heroin-esque feeling of vicodin and oxycodone after wisdom teeth surgery, and I can honestly say that I will never be completely free from the cravings of those drugs. I've been able to keep the cravings in check, but it's hard work. Hopefully Tiger's family does the right thing, and helps him out. If one takes painkiller addiction lightly, and attempts to toss it under the rug, it will remain a huge problem.
Bottom line, the masses will forgive him if he steps up to the podium like a man and answers some simple questions. If he continues to act like a sheltered child, his image will never recover.

I'm guessing he checks into a rehab clinic for "unspecified reasons" within 6 weeks.
Rehab is a great way to make sure that you get back on the sympathy side of the PR battle.
The thing is, people want to like Tiger, so as soon as he makes this about Tiger v. his demons, the public will get back behind him.

As soon as Tiger wins one major, all will be right with the world again.
I saw a great parallel to Kobe Bryant. Less than five years ago, he was a villian. Now, ESPN eagerly hocks his shit for X-mas gifts.
And Kobe was going through the whole "rape" thing....what Tiger is guilty for is falling for what many, many (all?) men would do if they were Tiger Woods and not DaddyTorgo. ;)

It is kind of pathetic how insecure he is. I mean, he's Tiger Woods. He's pretty much considered to be the best at what he does and the most dominating athlete in his respective sport (maybe along with Federer). You think a guy like that wouldn't be insecure about anything, but I guess despite the fame, fortune, success, etc. he's just like anyone else. Well, kinda.

And this....people like this have a very hard time growing up. when Dad pushes them into sport to excel at an early age the shell grows but the person inside doesnt. They miss out on a lot of the normal milestones thus getting lost in age. IMO. Its not only sport though that it occurs within but money as well....spoiled kids that feel invincible get caught too.

I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try.
I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding. What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy, and safe haven we will need for personal healing.
After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.
Again, I ask for privacy for my family and I am especially grateful for all those who have offered compassion and concern during this difficult period.

Tiger needs to learn a few lessons from A-Rod. Once the story was out there he admitted it publicly and took the heat in TV interviews and press conferences. Less than a year later he is a world champion who has shed his playoff choker tag, and he is dating a movie star.
The longer Tiger leaves it before surfacing, the more difficult it will be for him.

I bet that Tiger's new role model is going to be Elliot Spitzer.
Like Spitzer, he's going to drop out of sight for oh, say, half a year to a year, and then he'll launch his orchestrated comeback. I have no doubt that Tiger's PR people are scripting the rollout already. If Spitzer pulled it off, it should be a piece of cake for Tiger.

I think golf will help him through all of this honestly, I mean Being in a tournament, mentally, and physically trying to win; where is his mind going to be? on the golf course. Obviously of course he is going to need time to soul search, figure shit out and all that. But imo there are times hes going to need to focus on the one thing hes known for all his life. Golf. Biggest Sports story of the decade (according to Bill Simmons)? Really?
I can understand why the entertainment tonight crowd loves this story, but we're still just talking about a pro athlete repeatedly cheating on his wife. I think we're pretty naive as a society still about this.
I mean, before this story broke, if you had to answer this question (and you win a prize if you guess right): Tiger Woods has cheated on his wife? What would say? Or what about, Tiger Woods has cheated on his wife with at least 7 different women? I would have guessed yes to both.

All the other stuff you wrote makes sense, but I don't see what it has to do with this being a big story.
What do you think will be looked at as a bigger story? The only thing that could be looked at as bigger would be steroids, but that doesn't pass your "are you really shocked?" test either.

You're right, I can't really disagree at all with the reality of this being one of (or the) biggest story of the decade. I guess I'm just reacting with surprise that that's the case.

Where are all the people who said this would not have an impact on his legacy?
See below. Regardless of how this plays out - his legacy as a golfer will be all that people talk about in 50 years from now assuming he beats the records. If this brings him down and he never golfs again - that's about the only way this ruins his golf career and legacy. Of course there will still be people like you that bring it up, but they will be in the minority on the subject.
It won't.
Well unless he quits or starts sucking. I don't see that happening though.

I think the Donaghy story is the biggest and most underreported story of the decade.
The thing with this story is that it's not just about him having an affair. It's countless women, a weird accident that makes no sense, and the likelihood of it being a DUI. Throw on top that Tiger Woods is one of the most vanilla athletes of our time and the least likely culprit.

This news does get annoying. He cheated he messed up. Do we(society) really need to dig up information a new woman every day. Does it really matter if it was 1 or 700, he messed up either way?
It makes him look like a scumbag but really how many athletes arent this way?
They are entertainers and personally I enjoy them for that. I never pretended any of them a great people and I think the majority are probably pricks in one way or another. As long as they can still entertain me Im not going to judge them on their personal issues. Maybe I just realize no one is perfect and "normal" people a chance to fix their mistakes so I think its wrong to not give famous people that same opportunity without throwing them under a bus.
Roger Federer always seems like a class act in how he handles himself on and off the court but in all likelyhood he isnt perfect either. You become a great athlete by having a certain personality traits that are also traits of some huge scumbags. Bold, Driven, Stubborn, Arrogant, Manipulative and the list goes on.
The one trait that great athletes also have that will help him out of this is resilience.

The thing is that the same thing that drives this media frenzy is the same thing that has made him a global icon that enjoys the spoils of making millions upon millions of dollars. You can't have it both ways in this scenario.
Tiger wants to have the emotional stories about his Father playing when he wins a tournament. He wants to hug his wife with tears in his eyes and hold up his kids and kiss them. He wants to sit down and give interviews when he has a new video game coming out or product to endorse. The reason he makes all this money is because people do care about his life.
So while I believe it is kind of dirty to be digging into someone's life, it's also a story because of who he is and who he has build himself up to be. He chose to be in the limelight and to become a celebrity. He chose to get married and have kids. He also chose to sleep with every other female on the planet is appears. If Tiger Woods doesn't want people reporting on this or caring about this, he shouldn't put himself out there like he does.
You can't use the media to make yourself uber-rich and then bash them when they report on something you don't like. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Totally agree. The sooner he golfs again, the better. Until then the media can endlessly ramp up to "his first tournament since..."

It's generally considered to have been one of the better/more effective corporate relationships out there, as Accenture (until the last quarter or so) had actually seen their business grow during the recent slump while others in the sector were having tougher times. It's something that made them stand out from among the crowd, as well as what Ryan S mentioned.
Never underestimate just how shallow an edge needs to be in order to turn into a significant competitive advantage. Hell, over half the budget I'm spending in 2010 for a current client is based on which reps get the decision maker better golf outings. The vendor doesn't have a better product, it's overpriced, it underdelivers, but as long as the person with the final say so gets several good personal trips a year, I have to tread lightly & buy his crap.

Tiger Woods Does Not Have 11 "Mistresses" (http://www.slate.com/id/2237992?obref=obinsite)
"Although mistress does not seem to fit the bill for Tiger's ladies, there is no obvious alternative. Girlfriend usually implies an ongoing relationship, as does lover, which is in any case regarded by many media outlets as a bit too explicit. There are also expressions, often slangy, for the relationship itself, including affair (which can, but does not always, imply a continuing relationship), one-night stand, or hookup. These expressions, however, or more circumlocutory descriptions ("a woman with whom Tiger Woods had an affair"), are clunky and therefore not appropriate for headlines."
I would like to suggest "fuck toy".

I think Tiger's women should be referred to in golf parlance based on the number of times he slept with them. Let's set par at 4, giving us this scale:
1: Hole-In-One
2: Eagle
3: Birdie
4: Par
5: Bogey
6: Double-bogey
>6: Mistress
"A woman with whom Tiger Woods scored a Hole-In-One" or perhaps "Tiger Woods Latest: New Birdie Comes Forward".

Anyways, all the talk like she was some saint or something is annoying. The only reason she was with Tiger was because he was a world famous golfer. quite the booty too.
not sure that anyone is saying she's a saint or anything, but at least (to our knowledge) she wasn't the one cheating in the relationship. sure maybe it was a relationship where she got $$ and he got her on his arm so they were both using each other, but given her reaction to the situation it sure doesn't seem they had an implicit understanding that he'd be getting tail on the side, so i think it's perfectly fair to consider her the "wronged party" in this case.

Saying Tiger was going to be back for the Masters was like saying Schmidty was going to choke in the JBL playoffs or Swaggs would never win a RWBL title...not much of a stretch.

Jim Carrey's twitter rant.
Jim Carrey criticizes Tiger Woods' wife, Elin Nordegren, on Twitter | EW.com (http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/04/10/jim-carrey-tiger-woods/?hpt=T2)
Jim Carrey, who announced his split from Jenny McCarthy this week on Twitter, has posted several Tweets defending Tiger Woods and criticizing Woods’ wife, Elin Nordegren. On Friday, Carrey wrote, “Tiger Woods owes nothing 2 anyone but himself. 2 please his father he gave up his childhood and his freedom in the world. That’s enough!” Then the actor continued: “No wife is blind enough to miss that much infidelity. Elin had 2 b a willing participant on the ride 4 whatever reason” and “No woman just stays at home with the kids anymore. Tiger was wrong and Elin was ignoring the obvious.” Carrey also commented on what he considered to be society’s unfair treatment of Woods these past few months: “Whenever we form a consensus about some1 we envy, who’s stumbling, our collective ego LOVES to flex its unified muscle! S’ugly!” Woods is playing today in the third round of the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga.
I like his movies but he is being an ass. I hope the media makes him pay for this.

Odd timing to announce you are getting divorced and then go on a rant defending somebody who did some epic cheating on their wife.

I don't think they ever married, so there's not any hypocrisy issues at play with regard to cheating on a spouse. I don't know, however, if one or the other was cheating regardless of legal status, though.

After spending the weekend at my in-laws hearing nothing but people rooting crudely for Tiger to do as poorly as possible in the Master's, I can sympathize if there's now some backlash to the anti-Tiger movement. The venom that people in my family had over this was ridiculous, and at some point, as Jim says, it turns into an excuse to throw hate at someone. Of course it doesn't change anything about what he did and how wrong it was, but naturally the pendulum will start swinging the other way when people get this maniacal about it.

Also Carrey may be in a general "hate all women" mode at this point and may go back and regret his forcefulness on this.
Though I think there may be some truth in the statement that she had to know, somewhat, that Tiger had been cheating on her.

this just in
After it was revealed that Tiger Woods cheated on Elin <NOBR style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, Sans-Serif; COLOR: darkgreen; FONT-SIZE: 100%; FONT-WEIGHT: normal" id=itxt_nobr_3_0>Nordegren</NOBR> (http://operationsports.com/fofc/#) with around 20 different women, including porn stars and prostitutes, he gave a robotic apology and said Elin was the most important thing in the world. He even retired from golf to devote 100 percent of his time toward fixing his marriage. Then a few weeks later he played in the Masters.
Hey guess who’s had enough of his shit.
Just days after Woods completed his triumphant return to golf following his cheating <NOBR style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, Sans-Serif; COLOR: darkgreen; FONT-SIZE: 100%; FONT-WEIGHT: normal" id=itxt_nobr_4_0>scandal</NOBR>, Entertainment Tonight reports Nordegren, who failed to show at his Masters comeback, is close to filing for divorce.
Correspondent Kevin Frazier, who has links to Woods, said: “For weeks now there have been rumors that Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren might reconcile and save their marriage.
“It was believed by going to sex rehab that Tiger had done just enough to keep his family together. But sources have told me that the marriage is indeed over.
“The couple hasn’t spoken for quite some time and it is believed that all they have to do is work out a few more details on their divorce and they can sign the divorce decree and both can move on with their lives.”

How many is too many? Apparently the answer is 121. Maybe he should have stopped at 120?
Tiger Woods has confessed to cheating with as many as 120 women behind his wife’s back during their five-year marriage, it was claimed last night.
But a one-night stand with the 21-year-old daughter of a neighbour in Florida was the final straw for Elin Nordegren, according to the National Enquirer magazine in the U.S.
The Enquirer claimed the distraught mother-of-two decided to sign divorce papers after learning the supermarket tabloid was investigating Woods’ alleged fling with Raychel Coudriet, whom he is said to have known since she was just 14.

Awesome
The first heckling of Tiger Woods occurred at the Quail Hollow Championship Friday afternoon. Woods, who is in danger of missing the cut, was missing a five-foot par putt on the 10th hole, when two spectators acted in concert. The first yelled "get in the hole." The second screamed, "That's what she said." Efforts to find the hecklers by Charlotte police and security were unsuccessful as they apparently left the scene in a heckle and run. Woods is now three over par for the week, two over the cut line.

Once the charade is up and he isn't the smartest dude in the room who can do know wrong. When he sits alone he wonders, 'Am I really that good of a golfer? Maybe it was just a down few years.'
