Agree about the jerseys. Originally the colors bounced with the positions but that has changed. I was thinking about making various colored themes where anyone interested could select a team color and apply it. Does not align well with MP unless your anal enough to create a separate load file for each league your in...... which I may do.
Understand the feedback so, with the various colored menus based upon team colors what one color would be the choice for a standard theme?
Time to go play........
Maybe white?

OK, first test pics going with specific position colors and a basic color for both experience as well as ratings based on the fact that the number represents. Went with solid jersey for my team (Saints).

Fucking gorgeous, with one caveat... I don't like the background of the CUR/FUT ratings being the same. I need to be able to quickly scan and see "good" vs. "bad." I know that the numbers impart that info, but it is still a mental jump from seeing color to reading/processing a number, especially when scanning many players at once.

SJS - this one was just to try and see how one color may declutter the screen. I prefer deviations also.

Ok, got it. I started working on that also. Have to get back to it.
Very clean, love it. Nice muted colors too.
Agreed with Shaw that a change to the positional experience would be great. Preferably ditching bars and going with numbers.

I like this set much better, great work as always. The talent and willingness of people to keep improving things or offering different options is remarkable and very much appreciated.
For the player cur/fut ratings, you might consider using a palate of five colors:
80-100 - red
60-79 - yellow
40-59 - green
20-39 - blue
0-19 - purple
The goal, as sjshaw mentioned, is to make it easy to identify good vs bad players at a glance. This is the basic color logic that makes sense to me.
Players with a red tag are the red hot superstars. Typically there are only a handful of players rated 80+, so the red appropriately makes them boldly stand out from the masses. If not on your team, these players should frighten you.
Players with the yellow tag are the gold star players. Guys rated in the 60s and 70s are your top starters and pro bowl caliber players. You might see between five and ten of these guys per roster, if lucky.
Players tagged green make up the majority of the league. Depending on position and specific skills, players rated in the 40s and 50s can be excellent or quite bad. Usually most of your starters and hopefully some of your backups fall in this category. They are not the red hot or gold star players that you'd really like, but they all get a green light for a possible roster spot.
Players with blue tags typically give you the blues, at least if you have to start them. On rosters, these guys tend to be rated in the 30s and are the backups, special teamers, and sometimes decent one-dimensional starters.
The purple tagged players rated 1-19 and blue-tagged players rated in the 20s shouldn't make many rosters, except for current ratings of inexperienced players. Even there, a blue/green player usually has a better future than a purple/green player (e.g., 26/42 vs 17/46 often tells you a lot).
Actually, the default ratings tags use this color scheme, but it's faint and graduated and not so noticeable. Breaking player ratings down logically into five simple colors makes it much easier to absorb the incredible amount of information in FOF. It also provides sort of a guide to team-building success for new players -- get gold whenever you can, red if you are really fortunate, but otherwise settle for as much green as possible so that you don't have the blues.

Quite likely, but that wasn't the point of the contest. FOF needs to look respectable out of the box and I think it will accomplish that.

Google for reshacker, dl it to your PC. There is a link in this thread somewhere.
DL the file I have linked earlier and unzip it.
Run the program and open the Frfoot.exe file (Make a BU first)
Open the Bitmap folder. Select the corresponding bitmap # then to 1033 file.
Select open file with new bitmap.
Locate the folder where you have the DL pics and select the corresponding one. Mine are numbered (I think they all are) and select the one you want.
Select replace bitmap.
Continue until you have everything you want replaced.
Select file, save as...... name your file with an .exe
Copy the file to the games main directory, click and run.
There are other details throughout this and other threads.

As you go through the bitmaps they are not all used in FOF7 but I tend to replace like items to ensure there are no problems.

Yes, I'm back. Well, in a moment of what I think was inspiration a light came on. Between the great work that was reviewed and chosen for consideration for the game (Sage and Cuervo), personal feedback from Jim and a lot of hit and miss on my part I think I have stumbled across what I think is MY best fit for the calendar in the game. The guys that submitted were spot on trying to maintain the original look Jim had in the game. (I don't think I can do a Julio type reconstruction and come close to the quality he showed)
The opening display has a grassier feel then my previous one, the displays on top and bottom are intended to be endzones (and matches the field I incorporated onto the scoreboard) and the text displayed for each stage is placed better and more legible.
Question for the masses. Does the yellow color of the highlighted text fit?

That is actually really nice, the Yellow is fine as it is in keeping with the theme Jim intended to use. Very crisp, clear and most importantly...simple.
Only thing is the none highlighted text, too hidden in the background and for me it is important to still know what the previous/next stages are on the calender. Of course I am only saying that based on the image I am seeing, it could look clearer when applied and view via the game app.

JR has allowed me to mod his experience bar so I have been trying to make it fit the pallet I have put together. I think it looks about right except for the font size. As JR knows this is difficult, getting a legible size that displays well. I tried various fonts, most sucked. Have an idea that I'm going to try - doing them by hand as JR and Jim did.

These are great. I was thinking that if SILB, MLB, WILB were changed simply to ILB (or MLB and two ILBs), so the four-letter positions don't overlap the numbers or look smushed as in the defaults.
Even with the "S" or "W" removed from ILBs, I don't think there would be confusion, because the the MLB obviously will always be in the middle and the SILB will always be on the left next to SLB and the WILB always to the right next to WLB.
Someone did it like this in a past mod, and i thought it was much easier to read both because it made things fit better and because given the space constraint, the truth is SLB and SILB / WLB and WILB almost look the same with such a small font. Just a thought for feedback the you requested. Thanks as always.
I prefer the full SILB and WILB tags. The font choice works.

Links are below. One is the new calendar with white text, the other yellow. It includes an internal zip with graphics, the xml and Greg's resource patcher. I still can't run the program so I have not been able to try it to make sure all is well.
Individual patches can be done using reshacker.
As usual I may tweak and add later but think this is a reasonably good foundation.

Nawlins,
Is there any chance you would be willing to share the templates you've got where there is no colour scheme and/or text? I've been wanting to do some of this myself but it is really difficult to take one of those bitmaps and remove all formatting while still keeping the spacing, etc.
Also, your work deserves a thread of it's own, as well as everyone else.
Would it be a good idea to start a thread and title it FOF7 - Final Graphics/interface mods?
That is where you can put all your mods, including images (saves people from going through 12 pages of this current thread) for everyone to see. This can obviously include everyone else who have made graphical mods.
Thanks again for your time and effort, the game is more palatable on the eyes :)

Guys I really appreciate all of the feedback and I am glad you are finding the offerings useful. I have no doubt the choices Jim has made will make a splash also and may put these to shame. Still I don't mind offering them as a different choice and the chance to make tweaks that everyone appreciates instead of a cookie cutter approach.

I have no problem sharing Sef0r, the work belongs to the community and/or Jim should he ever want to use something like them in FOF10 or beyond. I am a self taught Photoshop user using CS2 and probably only using about 20% of the programs capabilities. So the files are psd's, most of which I would have to do some cleaning of as I tend to add what I want without removing unused layers. Which ones are you interested in?

The problem with that one Nawlins is that it doesn't show the unfilled section of the bar. Example is Avoid Drops, where does the undeveloped colour for the missing 18 points come in?
I would say the dark blue is for rookie class. And If you were going with these colours, the darker the better. So a much darker Green would be better there...IMO

Actually Sef0r what you asked about presents an interesting question. If you look at both avoid drops and route running the indicator shows a rating of about 75 even though the numeric indicator reflects 58 and 58 respectively. Not sure why that is.
The rating colors roll from red through green with a silver back drop. I think it's Ok but may take a look at a darker one to see if it helps it stand out.

Perhaps you can try your hand at Julios idea of the cutoff indicator but make each section a specific color.
Roster Foder - Orange
Solid Backup - Yellow
Starter - Green
Pro Bowler - Blue
Legend - Purple
Orange being a "Warning" color. While purple in the past has been known as a royalty color aka legend HoF'ers. Grey background color with a black bar representing future potential.
Just some thoughts :)

I like the gradient. I don't speak up much because I'm pretty happy so long as I can see the colors and numbers. I have some slight color blindness and have to use reading glasses so it can be tough to make out some of these things when they get sized down for my laptop screen. Your work is consistently good on that score. If I could figure out how to use the reshacker stuff I'd already have your work loaded up!

If you have the time dbd somewhere back in this thread (which is becoming rather lengthy) you can find a brief outline on using the program. It is actually very easy and after you do it once you will have it down. In addition there are also some recent links I posted for a program a member created, resourcepatcher, that you download and like before, a brief explanation of it's use is buried in the thread.

I was considering doing the exact same type of thing with the "future" bars, NawlinsFan. I was toying with a "laser" look for it, but I never got around to finishing it. I think I might now after seeing yours. It looks good to me to have as much difference between the current and future bars as possible.
This gradient stuff is not as good as the original red vs green.
You have your different colors on the roster screen to give you that quick "roster fodder vs all-pro" that you are trying to do here.
On the individual player screen, an all-pro could be pretty bad in a few categories like special teams or kick returning and still be very good. This is just too much color. JimG has this part down pretty well, just use two contracting colors for current vs potential and you are set.

The true value of the cut off points for me is that when setting up a depth chart and when I wanna quickly know which RB has better 3rd down skills or which DE's are the best pass rushers for a quick sub. Seeing those cut off points makes it easy without having to go into the numbers them selves.

I'm just seeing what kind of concepts I can some up with in bars, then I am going to use those as a template for 3 or 4 themes.
I plan on doing a monochrome theme for sure.
I want to do one that is really just completely bizarre.
I may finish the american flag version just as a 4th of July theme for no reason other than it is such an over the top theme.
I am going to work on a nicer looking version of the star bars because I think that idea might have some value.
I have a set of bars that hides rookie bars until you scout them for added challenge if that is your bag.
I'm going to make one team themed set for the Bengals for sure, because I am hopelessly devoted to them. That might make a decent halloween set as well.
I'm also going to complete that original green/white/black "arrow" calendar theme with matching bars, etc. I have an idea on how to make them unique to that set.

@nawlins
Love the color scheme with forest green, dark red and navy blue. Nice thematically.
@Julio
Really enjoy how yours all seem to follow a theme to the very end. I also see some good things in toying with the star bars more. Maybe one where the stars are fading? The zero end would be no star fading to a pronounced star at the legend end.
Can't wait to see what else you guys come up with. And yes, this is certainly Jim's fault! Not gonna lie, those graphics scared me away at first. Glad I gave things a chance.

Someone might have even done something similar, I like the gradient bars better myself, and I also like the red/green combination as it's been instilled in my brain since the FOF2 for me.
So I did a gradient red/green combination which to me, allows me to glance at a player and see differences. I think I remember seeing one like this, but I whipped it up anyway. I kept NawlinsFan theme for the bottom 4 as I use most of his other mods.

I'd definitely like that for the uniforms, but I'm not 100% sold on bars. I think there's a little mental work involved in reading the same data in different sets of colors that might take a little getting used to (not the same as ratings or experience, where the color is reliant on the value of the data).

I've moved a few things around, you'll probably notice. I consolidated the roster-related graphics, because judging and implementing the contest graphics would have been a lot more time-consuming otherwise. I changed the size of the left-column icons, so they will align differently.
I still worry a little that the elicense will detect some attempts to modify the executable as a license failure. Please test thoroughly and look for data corruption and/or error messages if you are distributing modifications to others.
Thanks - these are pretty cool. I agree with Cuervo about the mind-set of expecting red/green on the bars, but it's nice to freshen the game with a new look every now and then.

While I did like the new graphics, I'm so used to using the style I've had that I went back to it.
You can see in the first image how I use a small black box for the FA, and a large black box for the RFA's, plus the cross sticks out for an injury.
I also went back to the "old" uniforms as well as the old current/future and years played.
In the second image, I kept the red that was included, but changed the white writing to a green. I tried it with black, but that blended in with the positions so it didn't look quite so good.
If you think a different color would look better, let me know and I'll give it a go as well.

here are some screenshots of my old fof2007 game screen. sorted by ratings, positions and experience. To me personally I'd like to see a strong distinction between 3rd and 4rd years because that's where the line of RFA is. Such is to remind myself to resign those guys who are going to hit FAs. And for the ratings, since the majority of players fall within the range of high 30s to low 50s, I want to create a spectrum that distinguish the variances within this group in a more prominent way.

yeah, I agree with you these are some strong and saturated colors, and certainly not for everyone.
My rationale for the strong colors (esp. the ratings) is that I find it easier to get a quick picture of how strong or weak a roster is just by glancing it with the corners of my eyes. something I find difficult (for my aging eyes anyway) to do if the colors is of a "gentler" spectrum of pastel colors.
Same for the experience, with a quick glance I can tell whether the majority of a roster is made up of young guns or aging vets, without actually reading the numbers.
When all these are on the screens unsorted, I do think they look kind of messy. But since I always sort the columns either by positions, exp or ratings, I find the strong colors bring out an order that helps me.

You've seen a couple of these before, but here are a few shots and the .zip for the monochrome set. Some pieces in here are recycled from the work others have done, which made it easy to get done with this set pretty quick. I don't think I have seen a set of position buttons I like more than Cuervos, and the position experience bar and the top menu buttons and the background behind them that was added to the game looks awesome too, so I just made those black and white and kept them in this version.
The only tweak I am considering at this point is a tweak to the lit up calendar parts to make them a little less explosive looking. I'd ideally like them to look more like a neon light fixed to the mechanical part of the calendar.

If anyone wants to see anything specific attempted, I'm gonna be free most of the weekend and like Nawlinsfan, I also get some enjoyment out of fiddling with this stuff.

SJ, just so happens I do have it done and will add it to the zip. Right now is has the generic uni's (various colors) instead of team. It will take sometime to get that in place.
Ok, this is the first draft. I went red to green, rook to vet.
....but if I go green to red it fits Jim's text! Would just seem backwards to me though.

Does anyone know what bitmap needs to be changed in order for the rookie draft player screen to have a different color?
The Yellow and Blue seen here is way to hard on my eyes. It wasn't this way before the 7.0a patch, and I sure don't like it this way now.
I've used the "Patriots" color scheme, and that used to change all of the screens to their color settings, but now it just changes the roster window.
The rookies coming out for the draft is what you see in the image below.:(

I thought 136 was the Position/Franchise/RFA/FA/Injured status bitmap.
Opps, I see...I meant the yellow all the way around the player card, not the little yellow and blue by RB/PB/BS/END.
The little yellow and blue I made that way, as it's how I've had FOF setup for years.

It's very strange, as the players view from the roster window are in the correct color format, but rookies are like the one above.

Not sure if any league commishes would be interested in making screens like this available for their leagues or not. I did something similar a while back for a couple of defunct leagues. This is an example for the NAFL -

NawlinsFan, I have a request. I was wondering if you would add the NFL logo/shield (like the one you have on here, but with the NFL logo) to the new calendar that was just released in the new FOF7 patch? Would that be possible? :) It would be greatly appreciated. If yoiu can not do it, I'd understand that to.

Bitmaps.zip - Google Drive (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4Kkgd4dcxKDT0xMemozZ29JMEE/edit?usp=sharing)
I'm coming late to this (excellent) party. I downloaded this, and put together an xml for myself with the files from your previous Nawlins Field White Text zip file from a couple of days back. All is excellent, except that the 136 and 137 bitmaps from this (Bitmaps.zip) are not the same size. I assume 137 is a mask for 136, but it isn't the same and I think that's messing up the masking on some of the images.
As an example, the injured sign for defensive players isn't solid blue with the red cross, but has some white on it, as shown in the attachment. I think there are some other problems (some of the entries on my Depth Chart & Game Plan menu don't have dots next to them, or have some distortion.
All up, though, amazing work (and some equally impressive things from other folk as well)!

In the Bitmaps.zip, 136 is 1599x13 and 137 is 1476x12. In the earlier zips both (actually there were a couple versions of 136) files were 1476x12. I figure that perhaps an old version of 137 slipped into the zip?

Well everyone is lost in the new game as leagues have converted and are moving forward. That's good stuff. So this thread may become lost but from time to time it may be reawakened with some new additions........ I was Ok with the uni files I did but not content. So I have gone back and tweaked them some, cleaned up the font by doing it by hand to make it sharp, added some additional layers to the jerseys to bring some additional uniqueness. Its not possible to replicate them easily. So for anyone interested, or anal like me that likes to have a different setup for each league, I will be updating a uni zip file so anyone can add these (you will have to mod the bitmap first though). If/when I have time I may generate a league set so you can just reshack it.

Another option with the TVs might be to try to display network logos inside the frames - though I don't know how things work as far as what screen is matched up with what game. I know there's some screen that tries to rank the games, but I can't say I've paid very much attention to it. But the premier game might be on NBC, second ESPN, then a mix of Fox/CBS and an occasional NFLN.

Tried out all three of these new looks (and the required mask, of course).
First, the images saved as pngs, which I had to convert to bmp (this wasn't hard; under Windows I just used Paint, but I imagine many/most graphics programs would find this easy).
In the end I found the purple TVs (my first choice) a little too intense. I might try to tone them back to more like the purple of the side and top menu buttons I'm using. I'm trying the other TVs now, but I'm in pre-season, which is I think why they are all the same when it looks like the images should be different for each station.
In the end I've switched back to the last red/green iteration for position experience, because it really is easier to see the differences. I'd be interested to see that set with the red and green swapped (so red is the higher scores, and green the lower ones - I think the dark to light would have to be changed for them as well so they would read right).
All up, though, I'm mighty pleased and impressed with the way the game looks for me now!

I haven't tried the solid colored screens in-game and appreciate the feedback. May try to tone them down as you mentioned.
For the "screen" shots I also noticed that during pre-season they are all the same but in-season that are all used. I haven't paid attention to which goes with which game but may. As Cuervo mentioned it would be interesting if you could tie certain displays with certain games.
I also agree about the experience bar. I personally preferred the red to green I did thinking it gave me the best quick visual reference. I only did the red series because of the in-game text that I can't change. I may throw one together as you mentioned to see how it displays.
I was also working on a ratings display that was more red but not happy with it.
As for saving a file when I right click and select save as it gives me both a png and bmp option. The files are bmp.
Like you, and I assume most others, I have almost found the display I enjoy. It in concert with the some of the base game displays really make a world of difference. My hat still goes off to Jim for entertaining the changes. Now he just needs to work out his marketing scheme to get this out to the masses even more.

Way to go "G"! This happens to be one of the blessings that Jim did not intentionally build into his game........ the ability for us to modify a few of the files to allow us to tailor some of the visuals to our personal taste. I think it adds to the game itself.
Your twist on the jerseys by doing a front view is cool. I didn't think about that and only pictured them as "back" shots.
I have my set of NFL jerseys done and have begun wasting time on doing league sets for various FOF leagues, on my own, not requested. Thinking I may do some old school also - USFL, WAFL etc. May never be used but I still enjoy it none the less.
I do hope Jim entertains modding the "experience" text which will allow various color schemes to work.
