Okay, fellas, I'm looking for the NFL mods that have the NFL helmets and the other NFL graphical mods. Is there a place where they can be downloaded? Also, I am looking for that utility that allows you to edit files and other things within FOF. For the life of me, I can NOT remember the name of that utility. It's been about 4-5 yrs since I've played FOF, or any PC sim for that matter.

Also, How can I start off with a alternative palyer file instead of the NFL one that is installed? I mean, I know how to do it, but is there already an alternative player name file?

Thanks again and thank you all for your patience. I know it will all come back to em as I start digging into it a bit more.

Haven't tried it yet with FOF7, but I never got it to work with FOF2007 on Windows 7 (only worked for me on Windows XP).

Would like to know if it works now as well, or if there will be a new one created.

Before gstelmack created the patcher that would automatically swap in custom image files (my buttons and position indicators, Dutch's icons, Icy's stuff) you could swap these out using ResHacker. I do not know if that tool will work with the new version or what any of the new standard image resources look like (i.e. are the old ones compatible).

Does anyone know if the old roster and draft files still work with the new game?The csv.txt files are slightly different. It looks like some very minor modifications will need to be made to the old csvs, then they should work fine.

:( {{sad face}} that's a bummer, but I know these things take time and every one here has a life and/or a family and those come first, no doubt.

Well, thanks for all the replies and help regarding this. I did download reshacker and it apears to work. I will just have to update/modify the positions things one by one instead of using gstelmacks' utility which does it all in one shot.

Actually Michael if you use reshacker to open the 2007 file with the image installed you may be able to save the image to your hard drive. Then using reshacker on the 7 file replace the current one with the saved one. I think!

I've already used Reshack on it, and the game still works fine.

All I did was edit some of the bitmaps so I could use the colors I prefer, as well as numbers that I can read.

What is the name of the file you edit ? The .exe ?

Yes, the exe, or the Front Office Football Seven.exe

A couple of the Bitmaps are under a different number.

The 323 bitmap is still there, but the one I found I had to change in order for it to take affect in game was 339, so I changed both, just in case.

Same with bitmap 302, I found it under 340 for it to take affect in game.
Same with bitmap 300, I found it under 338 for it to take affect in game.

Were you able to do anything using Reshack with the position experience tags (bitmap 341)? It's hard in the new version to differentiate the "thicker is better" red bars that show varying degrees of experience at different positions. I tried my tags from FOF2007 and they didn't display properly.

Agreed. After looking at it some more, the new version is a bigger file (400x500) than the previous one (180x244) and can't simply be resized, so it's going to require some photoshop. I'll try messing around with it too. Thanks.

I *suspect* but have not tested that the UtilitySuite resource patcher will work, if you can specify the correct FOF7 executable. But you'll need to rebuild the DLLs/XML. The DLL is just a typical Win32 resource DLL, and the XML tells it which resource from the DLL to patch into which resource in the executable.

I renamed the new Front Office Football Seven to

Ran Resource patcher.

Backing up FOF exe...Done!
Beginning resource batch
Ending resource batch...Done!
Finished!

Looks like what Greg said. It's looking for the resource packages. But it did read it and made the backup. I'm not familiar with building DLL's but looks like a good weekend to learn.

How did you get the logos to fill the entire box? I'm using logos from the reference thread that don't, even if I manually increase the size of the .bmp. It seems that the display size is limited to 268x164 even if the picture is larger.

Thanks.

I have not done mods to games for some years, but it's never too late :)

I'm going to start with modding the interface as muchas possible, knowing the huge limitation that is to work with .bmp files extracted from the .exe with reshacker instead of starting an interface from zero.

Disclaimer: I do this just for fun, I don't get any profit doing it, I'm not associated to the developer or publisher on any way, and if Jim doesn't want me to mess with his files or game graphics, i'll just stop and delete all my work.

NOTE: I won't redistribute .exe files even when that would be the easiest way, as I understand how it can interfere on Jim's work if people downloads edited .exe files that could create issues that could drive him crazy trying to debug. I'll just write instructions about how to replace the files with reshacker.

First thing i have done is to mod the schedule panel as found the default one too hard to read with the red font over the grass background.
Still some tweaking needed, as i don't like how the WK 1 text looks in the new screen, if i can't make it look good over a light background, might need to switch to a dark one.
The calendar icons might need to be replaced too, as could create an issue in the regular season months as they change from Sept to Dec, will look how to do it.

That is awesome. I really don't like being negative, because Jim is a hero in my eyes, but I really wish he'd at least ask the community for some assistance regarding the graphics.

There's absolutely no need for super graphics, but the simple things.. the toolbar and the panels.. could use a slight facelift.. I think it might save lives and families..

Given the amount of fanboys in here, I'm certain there would be offers to assist for free and with no requests for payment or commissions, and including them (naturally with permission) in the original EXE would make more sense than having people use the Resource Hacker.

Me, I'd go to Fiverr.com and pay someone $5 per piece of graphic :).

No, Icy, don't delete your work no matter what! My first reaction after playing the game for the first time was, "we need to reshack the heck out this **it". I was hoping the old bmps would work, but I'm glad to see you're back in action (they do, right? for the positions, etc? I'll go give it a try).

My take so far: this appears to be--by a very wide margin--the FOF version with the best gameplay. And this is also--by a smaller margin--the FOF version with the least aesthetic appeal.

Heh. I think there are going to be about 50 reworks of the calendar (I just started poking around this morning, and was planning on touching up a few things as well).

BTW, for anyone who still wants to run it, it appears that Extractor still works (and may be considerably faster??). So if you want to run it out of cycle (sometime other than the two points Jim suggests) or are wedded to old db constructs, you should still be ok doing it the old way.

Btw, the roster screen icons don't seem so bad this morning. In any case, the ones I like the least, the position icons, can't be replaced with the old bitmaps because they have a new position: LS.

My minute contribution: I can't remember who made a super cool black background bmp for FOF. In the attached zip file you'll find that bmp. I also added a slightly less horrible, IMO, background in dark green for the beehive background to the main screen icons.

The bitmaps you'll need to replace with Resource Hacker are in the title of each bmp.

I see what you mean, Icy. I experimented by extracting the icon set and making modifications to see how far I could go. So far, I've got it working with altered colors -grayscale for example. But if I go any further, even blur the icons a bit, the graphics collapse. I got to say, the negative is interesting as a temporary fix:

That's why they were grayed! I needed to work on the alignment. When I did it a few were off. Thanks Icy.

No, it's not the alignment. That much I can tell you. It happens if you add effects to the original set, too.

I built the "FOF Black" collection of bmps about 2 years ago including that background. I tried to modify the gstelmack tools but only go far enough to get it to work once (and strangely couldn't be repeated).

You nailed it Icy. Maybe capitalize the P on player and center it under Multi. Would it be easy enough to alter the base color for various versions; i.e. black, gold, etc. I also completed this set for the table, haven't used it in game yet:

Half finished Scoreboard: http://i.imgur.com/3b5W2gL.png

Small Scoreboard Numbers: http://i.imgur.com/sFVy9Fb.png

Tomorrow the goal is to do something with the top icons and probably change the font on the calendar (the numbers and text are a little messy at the bottom of the calendar.

When put together, these are the screens: http://imgur.com/a/SUAzq

I did have to play with the location of the calendar window a bit to make it look like the images sync up, but I wish I could find a way to make the border of the calendar black.

This may be an impossibility, but is there any way to do ResHack style editing when running this through CrossOver on OS X? I just got my Air, and I was surprised how well FOF7 works when running in an emulated program interface, but I'm a little concerned I'm not going to be able to do the updates and external programs that improve this program so much.

I'm pretty sure you can; the old file is in there and overall it is smaller, but I think the areas for the experience indicators are the same size. In any event, you should be able to just block in the whole area with colors, etc. The fonts may be a little trickier because of the masking, but I'm sure it's doable.

Open the game exe in ResHacker. Expand 'Bitmap', then a specific number to see what image is associated with it (the two backgrounds are 328 and 329, for example). Right-click the 1033 and select 'Replace Resource'. Then open the file you want to insert, then hit Replace. After you are done, save the exe file.

I will look into reviving my old ResourcePatcher utility, but I'm going to make it generic, not FOF specific. You'll still need to create a resource DLL to distribute the package (you should be able to do this with ResHacker, maybe use one of those from the FOF2k7 utility suite as a base), and you'll still create the XML that specifies the individual mods, but it is a much safer way for folks to apply these changes.

What are you reducing from - to?

Reason I ask, and I'm sure you probably already know. The smooth edges are only smooth due to the quality (high pixel count) of the image. When you reduce the image size, the pixel count reduces too. So that 640x480 image looks jaggy when you drop it to 20% of the original size.

You can definitely do that, but will take you a LONG time as you have to manually configure each window for each team, and I'm sure there are at least 5+ sections to change as you have your main window color, window border, text background, text colour, etc.

I am on Windows 7 and the way I have to do it was make sure that you open reshacker as administrator. It is just much easier to go the properities of the reshacker.exe and change to always run as administrator. Then it saved for me, however after doing so it triggered AVG for me again.

It's all security - "Program Files" is protected to keep viruses from stomping on your exes. Run as Administrator works, or copy the file, change it, move it back.

FWIW, this actually started with XP, but everyone set their user accounts to "Administrator" and never noticed...

So how do I preserve the pixel count?

You can't. Reducing the image size & reducing pixel count are one in the same. I suggest you find an image as close to the actual image size you want, that way not as much is lost in the reduction.

If you take a 1000x1000 px image and reduce it to 50x50 px the amount of detail lost would be too much, but take a 200x200 and reduce it to 50x50 and it isn't so bad. Circles will still look like circles.

If anybody has some of these ready to go and wants to beta-test ResourcePatcher, let me know where to get the bitmaps, and which FOF resource each one replaces, and I'll create a resource package and send that plus an executable to apply it. This will be a generic update to ResourcePatcher that can work on anything, not just FOF, so if you need it for other games/programs it will be available for you.

New Positional Experience .bmp (#341) -

The numbers for positional experience go from 1 to 9 and vary in color from ice cold light blue to a white hot check mark. I shortened each position to a 2 letter designation except for one.

RE= RDE
RD = RDT
LD = LDT
LE = LDE
SO = SOLB
SI = SILB
ML = MLB
WIL = WILB
WO = WOLB

What it looks like in game:

And the bitmap, ready to patch:
http://i.imgur.com/Ty71726.png

Next I am doing a set of bars that follows the same progression as the numbers so you get a sort of visual representation when looking at a players bars. I'll post it.

It's a simple text file, XML is just the format for the lines. Open the sample file and use it as a guide. The key is you need to know not just the bitmap, but which resource number it replaces in the target executable. The best way for this to get handled is for the person creating the mod to also create the XML (since they know which resources they are replacing), and package them both up together.

Are you still getting it seamless while in full screen or only when you have it in widowed mode?

It's seamless in both, but I have a widescreen monitor and the background space in the game doesn't start at the right spot. There is always a big black space on the leftmost and rightmost part of the screen. A normal monitor would show it entirely seamlessly probably, but on a wide screen it appears the background is not spread over the whole screen like it should be. The background starts like 50-100 pixels in and ends 50-100 pixels early. There doesn't seem to be a way to fix this particular problem. Same thing with the little black boxes left behind on the calendar screen. I browned out the part that is supposed to show there, thinking it would result in brown boxes, which essentially would blend with the calendar, but it leaves black boxes behind for some reason.

JR , font is Lao UI. What's the easiest way to get the font file for the scoreboard to align right? I am using yours as a guide as well as the original. The font you used is equally spaced, mine don't end up that way. :mad:

There are instructions in the thread. Someone needs to create an XML file that specifies which bitmaps replace which resources, bundle it up with the actual bitmaps, and then you select the directory that contains those plus select the exe, then tell it to patch.

I had to tweak the font multiple times to get everything lined up right.. I had 3 or 4 numbers and letters about a pixel off. Basically all I did to align them in the first place was to take the original .bmp and just put a new layer on it, then added the text one at a time in the boxes, trying to line the front edge of each letter with the letter it was replacing. Once I got that done I patched and ran the game, then watched the game on the scoreboard to watch for misaligned letters and tweak them accordingly. Its easy to usually pick out which one is the problem letter or number, because it will be the one that catches your eye as being out of place.

I also built the new layer at I think 1000% size so I could make sure I got everything right on the exact pixel it needed to be.

Of course I work with Paint Shop Pro 8, which came out like a million years ago ( I love the familiarity I have with it, so it is hard to switch to Photoshop) so YMMV.

Where are you pulling your logos from Mike? I have been screwing with other graphic edits and haven't tried what your asking yet. Still, sites like sportslogos.net may help. Go there, work your way into the team folders, select the logo and when it is displayed in it's larger format I right click on that and save it. Yeah, I got them from that site. I tried both gif and bmp versions, but CS6 Photoshop keeps giving me errors when I try and use the wand that the image needs to be set to RGB mode. When I try and even create a second background layer, I can't even click anything--it's not even a listed option in the top menu under Layer. When I try and double click on the right hand side, nothing happens. The layer locks are all grayed out above it too.

Hate to beat this dead horse, but wrapping the best pro football simulation ever made in the default graphics is like bringing a Nobel prize winning economist to speak in a clown suit. People not already in the know simply won't take it seriously and never will even reach the substance. Thus presentation does matter.

No apology is necessary. You're trying to help people enhance their experience, and that's a positive. We just have to be careful to preserve the license and avoid potential legal issues.

If people enjoy moving in other graphics (I hardly blame them - I'm obviously not an artist myself), then it's great that people can help them with that.

Im still confused as to how I can load these wonderful mods into my game. If the OP could maybe update the first page with a link to everyone's mod's and a how to guide, that would be much appreciated. Just think it would be easier for everyone in the end, and thanks again to all for there efforts!

This. This whole thread is greek to me but the graphics all look great and I would love to get some of them into the game, but none of it makes much sense to me.

Once someone has a mod, I can help them make it ResourcePatcher ready, and then get instructions up.

I have been following the great work of the graphic mods people are doing and waiting in much anticipation for one to apply to my game.

It will be a pain to go through the steps, but I am in IT and will be able to work through it.

However too many users wont have the expertise, patience, or even knowledge of their existence.

There is also the issue of needing to modify the .exe file and then remodify it after any patch.

Am I missing something here, Isn't this easily addressed in other games of the same genre with "skins"

Have 3 default choices, and then let the world at creating as many as you want. I understand Jim doesn't have the interest in making the game look more modern, but many do and this seems like an obvious solution to me. Plus when you open it up, the game can be presented in some amazing ways - you need look no further then what can be done with FM for some great examples. It doesn't need to be to that level. But something that EASILY allows the game to look like one of these.

Yeah, i'm running into the same problems. 1600x900 pix and if i'm at full screen i also have the black parts.
I can only get that to disappear by editing changing the game in windowed mode.

edit: I must say i only have a black box to the leftmost when my background pic is about 1500px wide. But when my background pic is 1600 or 1200 i get a black box to the leftmost and rightmost.

The boxes behind the numbers are like an automated shade. The collor does change with the backgound. Would be nice to be able to change the position the numbers come up on.

This is my top... for inspiration

Those buttons are killer. They'd go real good with the brown theme. They are pretty much the exact style I was wanting to make mine look, I just haven't had a lot of time the past couple days to design anything.

I am a mere lurker on these forums, but I have played FOF dating all the way back to FOF2. As much as I enjoyed the previous games, the UI is the primary reason why I haven't purchased FOF7. I imagine it would be even more of a turn-off to someone who is new to the series.

It seems to me that it would be in Jim's best interest to accommodate the great work that people are doing here, either by allowing skins to be applied or by simply adopting the best of the community-created elements as the official UI going forward. How can the community get his attention on this issue?

Trying to update using reshacker & I seem to have forgotten exactly how to save it properly. It's changing the .exe into something no longer execuatable, then AVG is seeing it as that virus.

Any tips? these mods look fantastic & I wanna give 'em a go!

All 4 "G". I appreciate your doing this. I am still tweaking a couple of the overlays but what's in the zip is a good start.

I was looking at your test sample. When you do this will you also send out the xml? If so I was wondering if it would be easy enough to add future changes without screwing it up but being that I have repaired aircraft all of my life and my last incursion into learning code was way back with some intro to Cobol, Fortran and of course basic. Yeah, I'm old!

Hey NawlinsFan I started learning back in the Cobol/Fortran days too!

Editing these file is fun and easy once you get used to it. I have had a blast setting up the game for what I like to see.

The best thing about an easy to apply app would be patches. Once the game is patched and you update, you start over so that would make it quicker and easier.

Attached is a zip file with a start for you. Put the bmps in a folder called "NawlinsFan", and this XML just above it. In the XML you can see the relative paths. Should be easy enough to edit, then use the ResourcePatcher tool to point to the folder containing the XML and to the FOF exe.

I haven't made the scoreboard change to apply to all yet, and with this and your zip my position, rating, and experience graphics in the roster did not change, but the calendar, background, and font bits all worked.

Note that the only thing keeping me from creating a commandline version so folks can just create a double-click batch file is that the path to the FOF exe will vary on everyone's machine.
