Some in Hog forum are predicting a 7-5 or 6-6 year. That would be a disappointment for Pittman's 4th year.
Assuming our QB stays healthy (unlike last year), I'm more positive but honestly don't know how we'll do with a new OC and a new DC this year.

dola: Just to add, two is a good position. Georgia's schedule is softer than Charmin. They have one mediocre game against someone they should beat (and the always do), The number two team can't vault to number one pretty quickly. As much as Georgia has the resume of the past two years, a loss in the season could put them in real jeopardy of not making the playoffs. If that loss keeps them out of the SEC championship, then it definitely will.

Ouch.
Former Hogs RB Alex Collins has passed away, reports say it was a motorcycle accident. This came on the heels of former Hogs QB Ryan Mallett drowning in June.
Neither made a big impact in the NFL, but both were great Razorbacks and really fun to watch.
Not a good year for Hog fans.

Nice!
Why do players commit so early? It's a long ways till 2026 but nice catch. The Hogs better do well otherwise I can see him go to greener pastures.
Tay Lockett chooses Hogs over 40 other offers | KNWA FOX24 (https://www.nwahomepage.com/sports/pig-trail-nation/hogville-hog-recruiting/tay-lockett-chooses-hogs-over-40-other-offers/)
Arkansas has landed San Diego (Calif.) St. John Bosco Class of 2026 defensive back Tay Lockett on Wednesday.
Lockett, 6-0, 175, has committed to Arkansas over offers from 40 other schools including basically all the national powers.
“I chose the Hogs because of the program Coach (Sam) Pittman has already shaped it into, but because I know we can only get better,” Lockett said. “Another big reason I chose the Hogs was because all of my family lives in Arkansas. I get the ‘home’ feeling the minute I get around the coaches and players at the University of Arkansas.”
Lockett is the first pledge for Arkansas in the Class of 2026. He’s a MaxPreps Preseason All-America.
He chose the Hogs over offers from such schools as USC, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Florida State, Penn State, Georgia, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, UCF, Arizona State, Ole Miss, Michigan, Auburn, UCLA and Miami among numerous others.

I kinda felt bad that the Pac-12 was dismantled but now that I'm home and expected to settle in to watch a decent team only to find out the game is on a non-existent network... Fuck the Pac-12, I hope it doesn't last until June 30th.

Another 2026 commit (and stole one from GA).
OT Bear McWhorter from Georgia. Had offers from AL, AU, Cincy, UF, FSU, GA etc.
2026 means he's 18-1-1 = 16 (?) at 6-4, 297lbs.

Honestly not surprising, given the amount of talent in the south. California and Texas are 'hurt' by huge populations, but that 1.25 still equates to a lot of players and Utah, which may surprise some, has a large poly population and Poly's have a higher percentage of players in the league than any other ethnicity.

Kent State's three returning starters, all on defense, tie Colorado for the fewest overall returning starters in the country.

The Dawgs have a relatively easy schedule this year (I mean, it's not as if they are in the SEC-W). Only 2 ranked teams (as of this week) on schedule with #9 Tennessee and #20 Ole Miss, and both are later in the season.
I wouldn't panic yet.

No panic, just observation. I know how easy their schedule is, but what that translates to is they have no room for error. The offense isn't looking great but especially the offensive line is just getting pushed around. That is not going to translate well once they start playing SEC level defenses unless they clean it up.

Getting three interceptions will help. The OL does seem to have wore on their DL. Let's see what they look like to start the second half. Teams like this don't have the depth to rotate talented DL to keep them fresh like better teams will.

09-09-2023, 01:03 PM
That interception that Beck just threw was just a horrible series of mistakes on the Refs. They quick snap because the defense encroached and Beck forced a ball thinking it was a free play. The Refs didn't through a flag on the obvious penalty there or on the pass interference that cause the pass to bounce out to the other defender. Just garbage.

In what direction (I've been out all day, so I haven't seen anything about the games)?
Tulane outplayed 'em for much of the day, despite having a not-ready backup QB play the whole thing.
Ole Miss took a 20-17 lead with 12:50 to go. Led only 27-20 with 2:56 to go.
Tulane onside kick fails, Ole Miss bungles the possession ... but hits a 56 yd FG miracle with 1:56 left ... and a sack and recovery TD provided the final margin.

Very true. For all of Alabama's chest thumping I would also note that Bob Stoops was 3-0 against the Crimson Tide during his coaching career at Oklahoma. "You just can't score against those SEC defenses." Remember that one, before OU hung 44 on them in the Sugar Bowl?

They may also not play anyone in the top 25.

No, and they shouldn't unless there are 4 other undefeated teams. I think the idea they won't play a top 25 team is silly. Whoever they play in the SEC championship will be at least top 25, so will most likely Tennessee and Ole Miss. Kentucky and Auburn could be as well. It is a easier schedule than they usually have but it isn't exactly a MAC schedule.
Now if they lose any of those games, it will be really hard to get into the playoffs. They have no room for error.

Miami Hurricanes coach Mario Cristobal says All-American safety Kamren Kinchens is in "good shape" after being carted off the field following a scary hit late in the Canes' win over Texas A&M.
Cristobal, in his weekly appearance Monday morning on WQAM radio in Miami, said all test results have been encouraging. Kinchens was released from a hospital Sunday.
Kinchens' family posted on social media a photo of him from the hospital bed, thanking people for their support and saying he was "doing better."

Just following up on the SMU to ACC story.
Let's just convert the major college teams into Under 22 pro leagues. Make it official that the boosters own the team.
MSN (https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/smu-pays-way-into-acc-with-200m-from-boosters/ar-AA1gonPQ?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=dcc611076e184b34bff71cca9a0304c1&ei=37)
(this refers to the top booster who put together the package to make up the $200 million that SMU agreed to forego in media money)
When Miller met with the top boosters to seal the move to the ACC, the combined net worth of the room was believed to be about $15 billion.
“It’s a couple hundred million dollars,” Miller said. “I’m not losing sleep over it.”
Let's once and for all time get rid of the "It's all amateurs, really!" bullshit.

Once the games begin, I tend to forget whatever it is that might or might not have pushed me away.
Life keeps intervening. There's the rape case with the Alabama walk-on, Mel Tucker's expensive abusive behavior in East Lansing, for NBA fans the brutal beating of the sister of Dwayne Haskins' widow by that Rocket player.
That's this week's off-field news. It makes you think. But sports is an escape. It remains an escape, as long as the leagues draw some line somewhere. Or at least say they will.
Despite all the available entertainment out there, and TikTok's formula of never-ending video crack, I think people still crave appointment entertainment in some form. But the scripted sitcoms and dramas are too conveniently binged and there are no more water-cooler shows, like Seinfeld. Plus the Hollywood strike means no new stuff, not that many were watching what was there.
Sports fits. It has to be consumed live. And football has become our sport. So we'll consume it eagerly each fall (sorry, USFL and XFL, we just aren't connected to second-best, or spring football). College football isn't dying by any means, but when you look at the top television ratings for the year, most of it (entertainment, sports, everything) is NFL.

Just another one of those opinion pieces. I don't really have a strong opinion either way but think I prefer if Jimbo given till the end of the season and see how it plays out.
9 & 8 win seasons ain't bad but get he's paid to win a lot more.
Texas A&M football: After Miami debacle, should Jimbo Fisher stay or should he go? (https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/tamu-football/texas-am-football-after-miami-debacle-should-jimbo-fisher-stay-or-should-he-go/)
The end of the Jimbo Fisher Era could be near at Texas A&M.
ESPN college football analyst and talk show host Paul Finebaum illustrated on The Matt Barrie Show what could be the driving force.
In addition to his failure to lift the Aggies to elite status, far from it in fact, Fisher could ultimately fall victim to Texas’ surge into the spotlight after the Longhorns’ dismantling of an Alabama program that has been the measuring stick for all others for at least the past decade.
:
It’s time to pull the plug on this experiment. It isn’t going anywhere. It’s reached its ceiling.
It'd be tough for Petrino to take over mid-season. I'd root for him but best if Jimbo takes the heat this year. Then next year ...
It was a nice try; it just didn’t work out. And would it be just too easy to slide new OC Bobby Petrino down from the press box to the playing field as the Aggies’ interim head coach for the remainder of this season?
It’s becoming clear that this is the path the Aggies should take.

Do you bet Western Michigan to cover?
Can Iowa win 20 to -9 to cover??
Could Iowa figure out how to score 1/2 points?
Assuming Iowa scores over 28.5, do they use this game to run up the count to goose the >25 ppg. If they can get to 70, that essentially gives them 4 points per game to work with the rest of the season.

Looks like Alabama is making a QB change.
Tyler Buchner expected to start for Alabama at USF, sources say - ESPN (https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/38406753/tyler-buchner-expected-start-alabama-usf-sources-say)
Sophomore Tyler Buchner is expected to start over Jalen Milroe when the 10th-ranked Crimson Tide play at South Florida on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC), sources told ESPN's Chris Low. Buchner, who transferred from Notre Dame in the spring, took the majority of first-team reps in practice this week, sources said.
Milroe started the Crimson Tide's first two games, but he threw two interceptions in Alabama's 34-24 loss to Texas last week.
Buchner played under Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees last season when both were at Notre Dame. He played in mop-up duty during Alabama's season-opening 56-7 win over Middle Tennessee, completing 3 of 5 passes for 27 yards.
If I was a NFL QB1 and this happened, I'd be PO'd but I'd laugh all the way to the bank. Can't help but feel sorry for a college QB though. I am glad the portal nowadays allows a bigger "marketplace" where college kids can transfer to other schools that may consider them an upgrade.

Can't help but feel sorry for a college QB though. I am glad the portal nowadays allows a bigger "marketplace" where college kids can transfer to other schools that may consider them an upgrade.
In this case Milroe really doesn't have anyone to blame but himself. The performance simply wasn't there.
That said, I don't believe this is an upgrade and either Milroe or someone else on the depth chart will get a shot at the job soon enough. (Probably not today, but soon)
Copied this from reddit. Buchner has a really weird career arc:
As a freshman in high school he only threw 37 passes and had 20 carries for 274 yards and 4 TDs.
He tore his ACL his sophomore year on the 4th play of the season and missed the whole year.
His junior year (over 13 games) he had 4474 passing yards on 66 completion % with 53 TDs and 6 INTs along with 128 carries for 1610 rushing yards and 28 rushing TDs.
He missed all of his senior year in 2020 due to COVID.
He was the backup in 2021 at ND behind senior Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan.
In 2022 he beat out Drew Payne to be the starter but injured his shoulder in game 2 against Marshall and missed the rest of the regular season. He started in the bowl game against South Carolina but only because Payne (now the backup QB at Arizona State) entered the transfer portal.
He lost the QB competition at Alabama to Milroe despite having the advantage of knowing the offense Rees runs ahead of time since they had been together at ND.
In his now third season of college he is 70-123 (56.9%) for 976 yards with 6 TDs and 8 INTs over 14 games with 3 starts. Also, is 83 for 468 with 8 TDs rushing.
So he has thrown 562 passes in games since 2017 (freshman year of high school) until now. 402/562 (71.5%) of those passes came when he was a junior in high school in 2019.
I was surprised that he went with Rees given he wasn't guaranteed the starter job. If he had stayed at ND, he would have been clear option #1 for next season and would have graduated with a ND degree.

Every year around this time, I go into a funk for 3-6 weeks (not necessarily consecutively though). It's when the Hogs lose a game they shouldn't have or a competitive game.
I suspect many of us here this issue. Does this mean we have an unhealthy relationship with CFB, taking it way too seriously, and should not watch it anymore?
I really think that is just sports fandom. There are definite levels to it, from the casual "nice if we win, but it doesn't mean much when we lose" to the extreme "My team lost, so now I have to go punch someone." I feel like if you are able to keep yourself from attacking someone, then you are a healthy level of fan.

What did they do?
This sequence. The game should have been over on the last play but Heupel chose to be a prick and call time out with 7 seconds left. The Florida QB then does the dance around behind the line to burn the clock, and Vol player hits him as he is taking a knee and then a brawl ensues. Unnecessary b.s. by a sore loser.

Well, so many of the matchups were crap. At least there were a couple of conference games and some of the middle-tier power 5s had out of conference matchups which were at least mildly entertaining (Purdue/Syracuse, Carolina/Minnesota
Nobody wants to see this Bethune-Cookman/Miami, Bowling Green/Michigan, Wyoming/Texas, Western Kentucky/Ohio State, Central Michigan/Notre Dame, Alabama/South Florida, Weber State/Utah, Hawaii/Oregon, Oklahoma/Tulsa, NC Central/UCLA crap. Yeah, it plays on campus. It's a load of shit for the millions of the rest of us.

College FB is the only sport that affects me this way. I still root for the Broncos/Lions, Phillies/Tigers, even FSU basketball this past year when they fell off a cliff I just kinda shrugged it off and stopped following every game closely.
Yesterday we were hiking Mt. Rainier so we had no service for about 5 hours. Missed the whole FSU/BC game except 2 friggin' texts somehow came through from my daughter - "FSU sucks" and "Jordan Travis is hurt." I... could have done without getting those texts. When I finally got service and saw we won, it was just relief. But seeing how it all played out, I'm glad I missed the game. Or at least the 4th quarter.

Iowa goes completely out of character at the end of the game and score a TD instead fof kneeling, which they ALWAYS dis.
Got BF a little cushion in his quest for 325.
BF took a 50k pay cut. But if the team reaches 325 points and 7+ wins he gets a 112,500 bonus, which mean he actually makes 62,500 more this season than last. More than the 40 raise he got the year before.

Even easier to say now but I think it was more likely ND would have brought in another Sam Hartman (/Jack Coan) instead of starting Buchner. Or maybe even Minchey had passed him... idk, I don't know what happened after that Sophomore year of HS and whether it was injuries or the missed COVID reps but Buchner was always terrible. Decent athlete but not nearly as good as he thought he was combined with horribly inaccurate, I was very glad Pyne took over and he's not a real Power 5 QB either but at least he could hit Mikey Mayer when he was open.
We'll see what happens Saturday but I've loved Hartman so far, and not too surprised after seeing him at Wake. He's a little old, a little short, and not as dynamic as others he's just super accurate, reads defenses very well, and doesn't make a lot of throwing mistakes. (Pocket presence/ball security does need a bit of work.) I watched the guy the last two years losing the rare game at Wake when they'd score 45 or 55 vs Clemson or UNC, just really wish we still had a Mayer or elite WR with how good he's making also rans like Holden Staes look.
I don't really pay attention to recruiting, but I did read somewhere that during the missed covid year he worked with some coach to rework his throwing motion and he has never been the same since.

Coastal Carolina gets a head start on this week's action with a game tonight against Georgia State at 7:30 on ESPN. Probably a good thing because the weather may be iffy all weekend. Interstingly enough they have never beaten them at home and never lost on the road. QB McCall has also never faced them at home, and looks to be healthy for tonight's game.
Again, stolen from reddit, but pretty well describes my thoughts:
"I love how this all started with "why shouldn't athletes be allowed to have twitch streams/be paid for NCAA video games/be able to do ads" etc. And it INSTANTLY (like within the first week) turned into pay-for-play, collectives etc. with some actual NIL compensation sprinkled in here and there. Now, a few years later, the (wealthy) institutions are ready to just do away with the NIL fiction and start paying them directly (courtesy of FOX et al).
Regardless of how you feel about player compensation, those NIL chicken littles concerned about NIL giving way to a slippery slope of direct pay-for-play were 100% correct."

It's always funny seeing people complain on the Michigan board whenever an SEC school makes an NIL splash, then (and I don't know if it's the same people - I hate that claim) it goes unchallenged when people want to promote Michigan's efforts to put together an NIL factory.
I've felt from the beginning that this is a transition period. NIL as it stands now is easily corrupted and organized gambling is heavily involved, whether it's showing up on the field yet or not.
Too much money out there. And when nine million people tune into a late-night game on ESPN to see Colorado/Colorado State, that money is justified. We are a football country and major college football is second to the NFL.
These kids probably should be employees. Contracts, health care, even pension of a sort because health care for athletes is a long-term issue. The NCAA can't do this because major college football is 1% of its business and what works for major college football most certainly doesn't work anywhere else.
I get why they've buried their heads in the sand. Once the kids are employees, it's no long rah-rah-rah for the alma mater. It's something else. Maybe that transition works, too. Maybe it doesn't.

You could almost certainly go back quite a few years and find me here repeatedly saying some variation of "y'know what? screw it, just make them employees of the marketing department since that's what they really are anyway"
Tax 'em, drug test 'em, give them only the discounts that other employees would get for taking classes, treat them same as any other marketing department employee.

I glanced at the stats and would never have guessed the final score. Not that they clearly should have won, but the stats suggested a closer score, maybe even a win. +1 on TOs, +30 on yards, 3rd/4th down efficiency was in GSU's favor but only 8-15 to 6-15 (hardly fatal), both teams punted 3 times, and despite being out-rushed, CCU actually had the edge in TOP (although 3 fewer 1st downs). Definitely doesn't scream 30-17 loss.

All I have to say is, as good a job as Norvell did this offseason in upgrading with transfers and some coaching moves (like upgrading the DB coach who was let go to Arkansas), his insistence on keeping Adam Fuller was going to sink this season for FSU. And that is proving true yet again. His loyalty to that guy is going to end up in this being a really good season instead of an ACC/NC-contending season. This is playing out exactly like I thought. Only positive I see is that FSU has proven to be a decent 2nd half team so they can still dig out of this. But Fuller sucks as a DC. He is the weak link.

from al dot com
Alabama wore slightly different “pro combat” uniforms for a 2010 game with Mississippi State. Unlike other Nike alternates that season, Bama didn't change much at all. The uniforms featured an American flag on the right shoulder pad and faint houndstooth pattern inside the front numbers.
