If you could pick one band to get back together?

Who would it be. I am talking in terms of bands that have broken up like Van Halen, Soundgarden, etc... Not bands like the beatles that kind of ran their course.

For me it would be Rage against the Machine

How exactly can you claim that The Beatles ran their course but not Van Halen???

Van Halen if Sammy Hagar is vocals. David Lee Roth has definitely run his course.

easy, it's my thread.

but to answer your question, the spirit of it is more geared towards bands that split up before their time.

Not sure how you can say the Beatles ran their course. They actually broke up prematurely in my opinion. Had it not been for the constant in fighting and interference by certain band members wives, The Beatles would have been together well into the 70s. I say that because, many of the Beatles solo albums were basically Beatles albums with one member missing (usually McCartney), being replaced by Eric Clapton and others.

My vote is for The Beatles.

Edit: Regardless if it's your thread or not

I changed my mind. Instead I would rather see Kid N' Play get back together.

I would agree with My Bloody Valentine, except that Kevin Shields' solo-stuff--what little there is of it--sounds a lot like MBV.

Let's face it--whenever bands reunite, listeners usually wind up wishing that they hadn't. (Echo and the Bunnymen, I am looking at you.) At least The Pixies had the good sense not to write any new music, just to play the old stuff.

Though my wife tells me we are probably better off listening to Floyd the way they were than listening to a bunch of 60 year olds trying to sing trippy songs.

I didn't actually know that his solo stuff was available. I remember hearing that his demos were really awful and would probably never be released.

Confining myself to bands that actually could get back together because their members are still alive, one of these three...

XTC
Talking Heads
The Dream Syndicate (original lineup)

The end result would probably be a letdown, but GNR would be my choice.

Van Halen would be my choice for bands who should just stop (and I am a huge fan). I don't want to see Floyd (or Zeppelin) together again for the same reason - I'd prefer not to have my memories tarnished, thank you very much.

Rage would be my choice as well.

If resurrecting the dead is ok it would be The Ramones, just to see them play live again.

If not, Nightwish with Tarja back on vocal duty.

The reason why I basicly said no beatles is because they were an obvious choice, they had like 300 songs already and I just don't like them

Yay! I don't like the Beatles either!

I'd go with Sammy Van Halen. Or Queen if we could resurrect people.

Gotta be The Smiths.

Come on, how many other bands inspired a whole novel based on some dude obsessed with reuniting them?

All of my favorite played-out bands!

husker du
minor threat
chavez
pavement
minutemen
flying burrito brothers (or graham parsons era byrds)
archers of loaf
braid
love

most of those bands were still making good tunes when they split/died.

1. The Beatles -- sorry...there was much more there.

2. If you don't allow them, I'm going to say The Doors. As big as they are, I think they could have been huge.

3. Guns and Roses....I'm not sure they wouldn't be the greatest of all time by the time it was said and done.

Another I would like to see with a caveat is Styx, provided they went back to their roots rather than DeYoung's move to pop oriented music.

Husker Du is also a good call. So is The Smiths--talk about the whole being greater than the sum of its parts!

I'm glad to know that BJM is still around--I must've mistaken one of their line-up changes for the final implosion.

For me, The Smiths, Stone Roses, Talking Heads and, of course, Devo.

If we could raise dead people, I'd say the Beatles and Joy Division.
