What's the most you've spent on an online purchase?

My wife talked me into buying a TV and we purchased it today through Amazon...simply put they had the best price on it compared to everyone else but I'm worried about that big of a purchase being online. Curious if anyone has bought a major purchase like this online...has the time come where there's nothing to worry about with such a purchase as long as you order through a major retailer?

Do you also worry when you open the front door in the morning and your wife is just coming home? I meant there is nothing to worry about. I'm sure she has a good excuse. Really what are you worried about?

I'm trying to remember the last major purchase I made that wasn't online.

Just the general process of relying on someone delivering it and having it not be damaged...obvious damage is returnable but if for some reason something were to break, us not notice it, etc.

I bought a TV that was around a grand or so, no problems at all and I saved a few hundred bucks.

I've gotten my last couple of TVs from Crutchfield. No issues at all.

I just spent a little over $1000 on plane tickets and accom. I think that's the most I've ever spent online.

To follow up on my post, in the last five years, I've bought two televisions, two computers, a sofa, a range, a dishwasher and negotiated the purchase of two cars online.

I've bought thousands of dollars worth of computer parts online. I've only ever had to return one hard drive. I think you'll be okay.

Sofas, computers, Aquos 46"...just don't sign the paperwork until you examine for damage. Also, some TVs are shipped with a drop indicator that changes color or something if the box has been dropped (or some amount of pressure was applied).

This is a bit of an issue with Amazon and other online retailers(overstock.com). It does take quite awhile to be reimbursed or given store credit. Most do reimburse shipping charges.

I should have added that I have bought several thousand dollars of computers online(dell.com etc.)

Aside from computers I never spend more than $100 per transaction online, including Amazon.com which I purchase from at least monthly.

I've bought a computer for $3k back in 2003. A month ago I bought a treadmill for $1k. We spent about $7k on our cruise last year. No problems.

I don't even think you need to put the qualifier "major retailer" on there.

I just ordered a laptop from a company called powernotebooks.com (I hadn't heard of them before last week) and two years ago I ordered my LCD TV from a company whose name I don't even remember. I researched both companies pretty thoroughly (15-30 minutes worth of Googling and the like) before plunking down the cash.

There are plenty of resources available on the internet to check on the reputation and quality of even small on-line vendors/retailers. So long as you do enough due diligence you really shouldn't worry about it.

expand on this as I may buy a car in the next year or so and was thinking about this option. Did you do a reverse auction where the local (500miles or so) used car places offer you a deal on their car?

I buy everything online and i would even buy the food online but my wife enjoys going to the supermarket. For me going to a shop is a waste of time when i can buy online, read reviews, comparisons etc all from my sit.

Probably about $3,000 for a trip to New York City... airplane tickets from Europe and the hotel reservation.

I bought a 46" Samsung tv from Amazon in October. It got to my house with a minimum of fuss and in excellent shape. They subcontract the delivery to another company, whose name escapes me at the moment, and I have read that it can cause some delays in delivery if you live out in the boonies. I live in Metro DC, so it wasn't an issue.

I have a friend of a friend that had her tv from Amazon damaged during delivery, and she had no complaints whatsoever about getting it replaced. Customer service took good care of her.

In the interest of full disclosure, my brother works for Amazon.

I buy most things online, especially for my kid. Nothing better than having diapers delivered directly to your door in bulk. Spent thousands on electronics as well without issue.
