OK, I think I'm tired of winter now....

Since I was a kid, growing up in Maine, I've always enjoyed winter. The fun you could have with snow outdoors, winter sports, curling up in front of the fire with hot chocolate, how pretty the snow makes everything look, etc....

However, this winter I've already had several instances where my car (the one parked outside) has had its drivers-side door frozen shut in the morning, necessitating me prying open the passengers-side door (if that'll open) and then kicking open the drivers-side door, or just letting the car warm up until it un-freezes.

Bad enough. But this morning was worse. After kicking open the drivers-side door from inside today, the latch appeared frozen shut. In that the door would no longer close. "Frozen Open", as it were.

So the wife left for work and I put my car in the 1-car garage, where about 2 hours later it warmed up enough to work again.

I wonder how many more months of this we have....

One thing that amazed me when I lived in Baltimore was how many houses had a one car garage or no garage at all. There's some pretty brutal cold out there. I was glad to get back to the Midwest and have a heated garage again. Makes the winter much more managable.

I have similar feelings. After living in the Northeast my whole life, I'm not sure if I would miss it if I left. To me, it seems the perfect climate might be in the South Carolina area. You still get the change of seasons, but not the brutal cold of the NE.

San Diego is nice too, but the cost of living is crazy.

I guess that's one drawback of our house. We live in suburban Chicagoland in a house built in the 1950s with a one car garage. Which was probably fine for when it was built. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to expand it without a very serious reconfiguration of the house, based on where it is on the lot.

Maybe I should just get a remote starter. Or just start it up even earlier in the morning.

I hate winter not because of the cold or snow, but because of the reduction in number of hours of sunlight. If it was cold, but there was sun from 7 AM to 8 PM, I'd be fine.

Didn't realize there was a poll, too. I voted garage -- this is my first winter with a garage, and I am loving it. But even last winter, which was my first winter driving to work in Chicago, I had public transportation options. Not great ones (a CTA bus, then a Metra, then a shuttle), but worth using when I would have to wipe snow off the car.

I don't miss Kansas winters at all. I like snow (the first day) and we've had a couple of "snowfalls" this winter in Richmond, but nothing more than an inch. And, thankfully, no ice! I hate ice.

I had a garage until the winter started when I moved. But I haven't had these issues. In part because when the weather was particularly bad, I didn't drive anywhere, because I live in walking distance to my job.

flere, I'm the same as you. Usually I enjoy winter, even more now with a toddler who likes playing in the snow. Even though none of the poll options apply to me, after dealing with December and January where the temperature did not rise above 10 or so and the wind chill was frequently -20 to -40 in the morning, I have never felt so strongly that it'd be nice for winter to finish.

I had my door freeze shut when we had a minor ice storm a few weeks back and I was at work. However, I LOVE having a garage and not having to scrape off frost on chilly mornings...

I had the door freeze shut on me once when I didn't have to go anywhere for 2 or 3 days, and when I finally left the apartment...oh, goody, it's frozen shut.

Well, that's not so bad. Get a pitcher of water, melt the ice, start the car and let it run for a few since I hadn't used it in a couple days.

Close the door, go put the pitcher of ice inside, come back out...the water has re-frozen the door shut. With my keys in the truck.

well for one now living in South Carolina after living the first half or so of my life in New York, and then Indiana for a short time, I have mixed feelings about living here in Myrtle Beach. Yeah you can't beat the ocean, but its also damn hot and humid here for several months of the year which makes it hard to go out and enjoy the ocean and surroundings. And of course the threat of hurricanes each year is not exactly fun. But not having mind-numbing cold for several months and almost no snow is pretty nice I have to admit.

But there really is no fall here on the coast, and that by far is my favorite season. I lived in the Hudson Valley, then travelled through the Adriondacks to college at Plattsburgh for four years, and the natural beauty there especially during the fall is breathtaking at times. It's pretty flat here in Myrtle Beach and the trees don't change color as much, and there's less and less trees each year as we are overly developed now.

If I could live a few months back home in NY, then the rest of the year here, I would surely take that opportunity because I really do miss the area I grew up in.
