There's a black bear in my driveway

This morning I cut the grass in my back yard. I finished cutting the grass and was walking around to the front with the mower when I froze. There was a large black bear standing in my driveway just staring at me.

Now I live in central Connecticut and we've seen bears in our neighborhood before but I'd never seen one so close and during the day before. I knew that you weren't supposed to run away from them so I walked backwards very slowly until he couldn't see me anymore and then ran through the woods to a neighbor's house.

The cops came to my house (because I couldn't get back into my house because the bear was blocking my path) but the bear was already gone. The cops said to keep my trash can locked in the garage from now on, which I'm going to do. All these years of seeing bears at night and in the woods but never in my driveway in the middle of the day. It was a pretty exciting morning!

Black bears aren't a big deal if they don't have any cubs. Just an oversized raccoon.

They are starting to move into my area so naturally people are getting all worked up.

I went on a fishing trip up to Canada to a pretty remote place (70 km on a gravel road) that was infested with black bears. They were more of a nuisance than a threat. Some idiot who was in our cabin before us left some maple syrup inside so the bears tore off the side of the cabin and broke in to get the maple syrup. Another guy in our group left a cooler full of beer outside while we went fishing and by the time we got back a black bear had broken into the cooler and drank all his beer.

We ended up getting a small shotgun (couldn't kill the bears) and I shot one in the ass. They pretty well left us alone after we'd shoot them in the ass.

+1. That would scare the hell out of me, especially for my 2 and 4 year old.

If it was, I haven't seen it.

They would seriously come to camp while we were eating and lounge around watching us eat and wait for us to go fishing so they could scrounge around for grease or whatever we left out.

Now if we were talking grizzly bears here.... I'd shit my pants. Black bear? Just a nuisance.

Fishing in Utah at our little spot, there is about an hour drive to get there through the mountains (dirt road) and then about another 45 minute hike....We ran into a Momma and her cubs. I did not think they were fast, but they took off and left a cloud of dust...

To me, they were beautiful animals, I kept the distance. But the minute they smelled us, they were gone.

The Farmington Valley.

I went over to my neighbor's house after I got home and warned them about bears in the area because they have kids that play outside all day during the summer. I've seen bears in the woods before but never that close to a house during the day.

Or conversely, if he's a black bear*, does that make him Tyler Perry?

Air Rifle waiting to send them on their way...Growing up my Shar-Pei was sprayed by a skunk square in the face....It sucked, they were living in the area...They found the family in the church at the corner, living underneath the gym floor.

Ya know it's only people living in the United States who use the term "African-American Bear".

Exactly. I'll bet that bear's never even been to Africa.

Simsbury is especially active with bears. I've got a lot of people who work for me who are full time work at home. My Simsbury employees have gotten so used to bears in their yards they don't even react anymore.

I have someone who lives in New Britain and they had a moose in their driveway. That still freaks people out.

This gets credit from my Grandfather...

If someone ever asks you where "such and such" person went, reply with...

He ran around the corner with a bear/bare behind.

No matter who the person that asked the question is, they'll immediately picture at least one of the two "bear" options in their mind, and you get to watch their reaction as they start to crack a smile.
