People should boycott Nike for the slave wages they pay their workers in SE Asia, not because they are giving Kap a deal

It is perhaps another thread, but sweatshops are generally a stepping stone to economic growth in a lot of these countries. People flock to sweatshop jobs because it pays more than many other jobs in the country (so the 'slave wages' may actually be more what they would make otherwise - which is why they never want for workers) and is a more consistent paycheck for some - now if you have your own money to start a business that's a different story. It's how South Korea and China (though the Chinese economy still has its own issues) have grown.

On some level it's like unemployment insurance in countries that don't have something like that. But, it tends to be a sought after job for some people and they will leave when they find a better option. and: http://www.globalethicsnetwork.org/p...al-controversy Quote:

I usually choose not to boycott products for political reasons. I really just don't see the point - plus there's a good chance that a majority of people who benefit from the sales of the company don't even fall in line with whatever public stance/message is sent by the marketing/donations of the company.
If you make the best product for my situation at a fair price, I will usually buy it independent of whichever way the social media wind is blowing that day. So, I'm going to get a Chick-Fil-A sandwhich while wearing my Nikes after visiting Walmart to buy a new backpack for my son. Then, I will watch a review on Youtube on my iPhone about a new book on Amazon I will probably order later in the day on Prime. Last edited by Arles : 09-05-2018 at 02:34 PM. |

I hate nike, but I ordered a half-dozen pair and am having them sent to a youth shelter in the area. I won't wear them, but I'm onboard with their statement.

Granted my favorite shoe is the Nike Air MOnarch. It is the only one that doesn't make my feet hurt after a long day walking on cement. I've been buying it for awhile and will continue that, but that's unrelated to the ad.

(And fwiw, that's awesome either way. I wish people who want to burn shoes etc they already paid for would just donate them as well.) |

i wonder if there is a mutual fund that bundles all the products aimed at urban youth? it seems to be a field ripe for exploitation.

It's a marketing campaign. I don't really care what the stance is of a corporate entity. This changes nothing for me.
I buy Nike shoes because they are the best on the market if you're active. Best running shoes, best basketball shoes, best shoes if you're on your feet doing yardwork. Still have a pair of Adidas I'll wear to the store and stuff but Nike is the only shoe that doesn't leave my feet hurting if I'm active. Quote:
I know people make fun of that shoe for being the old people shoe but it's seriously so comfortable. I use it when I walk to work or doing yard work. Every other shoe I've tried leaves my feet aching or gives me plantar fascitis. |

Have you ever wore a pair of Brooks fit to your feet type? If you have then you know this is laughable. But I also wear a lot of Nikes. For a casual tennis shoe they are hard to beat, despite being wildly inconsistent in quality and fit. I'll continue to buy them despite having no love loss for CK. Because its an ad campaign not a political stance. They dont tell you how Phil Knight feels, they tell you what will make you buy more of their shoes. Yeah, I had the Adrenaline GTS 15. It's a nice shoe. Maybe my feet are different but I get the same comfort from an Air Pegasus at half the cost. Then again I'm just a casual runner so maybe the more advanced you get the bigger the difference. Also have a lot of friends who swear by the Vaporfly. |

Im not a hard core runner, and have the gut to prove it, lol. And maybe its just I have a very weird foot (Big and Wide, Flat yet out rolling (I always get pronate and suppinate rossed up)). To me Brooks Dyads have been a life saver. |

Yeah outside of the Vaporfly most Nikes score really badly with serious runners.

I was seven years old, when I got my first pair
And I stepped outside And I was like, momma, this air bubble right here, it's gonna make me fly I hit back-court, and when I jumped, I jumped, I swear I got so high I touched the net, Mom I touched the net, this is the best day of my life Air Max's were next, That air bubble, that mesh The box, the smell, the stuffin', the tread, in school I was so cool, I knew that I couldn't crease 'em My friends couldn't afford 'em, Four stripes, some Adidas On the court I wasn't the best, but my kicks were like the pros Yo, I stick out my tongue so everyone could see that logo Nike Air Flight, but bad was so dope And then my friend Carlos' brother got murdered for his fours, whoa See he just wanted a jump shot, but they wanted to start a cult though Didn't wanna get caught, from Genesee Park to Othello You could clown for those Probings, with the Velcro, those were not tight I was trying to fly without leaving the ground, 'cause I wanted to be like Mike, right Wanted to be him, I wanted to be that guy, I wanted to touch the rim I wanted to be cool, and I wanted to fit in, I wanted what he had, America, it begins We want what we can't have, commodity makes us want it So expensive, damn, I just got to flaunt it Got to show 'em, so exclusive, this that new shit A hundred dollars for a pair of shoes I would never hoop in Look at me, look at me, I'm a cool kid I'm an individual, yea, but I'm part of a movement My movement told me be a consumer and I consumed it They told me to just do it, I listened to what that swoosh said Look at what that swoosh did. See it consumed my thoughts Are you stupid, don't crease 'em, just leave 'em in that box Strangled by these laces, laces I can barely talk That's my air bubble and I'm lost, if it pops We are what we wear, we wear what we are But see I look inside the mirror and think Phil Knight tricked us all Will I stand for change, or stay in my box These Nikes help me define me, but I'm trying to take mine, off I started out, with what I wear to school That first day, like these are what make you cool And this pair, this would be my parachute So much more than just a pair of shoes Nah, this is what I am, what I wore, this is the source of my youth This dream that they sold to you For a hundred dollars and some change, consumption is in the veins And now I see it's just another pair of shoes |

I really likes Brooks shoes and hadn't really worn Nike's in a while. But the new Pegasus 35 running shoe is the best I've ever worn. I have custom orthodics, so I need a neutral shoe (and Brooks usually was the best). The Pegasus 35 is a neutral shoe and I would highly recommend it.

I mean, I'm happy they went with Kaepernick over a picture of Trump with a "If you love your country and servicemen, just do it - stand." campaign, but it's a slick marketing move more than it is an attempt to highlight the issues Kaepernick is protesting against. I think it does help though, so I'll give them a pass, I just won't be singing their praises and rushing out to buy Nike products (any more than I do already - I love a lot of their stuff for reasons entirely around design/comfort).

I've never heard that. I've heard waitresses use it a lot. That's a good endorsement! However it doesn't last very long....like 6 months and then you need a new pair...after that long and when it gets wet, it starts to squeak. I have been trying other nikes and NB and skechers and shit and they are all CRAP! I DO like Merrell's and the like. However...Merrells and wolverines and other hiking shoes work great for standing still all day but give blisters if you are moving about. |

I haven't owned a pair of anything but NB for my athletic shoes in at least 10 years. I can get about a year out of a shoe, but that's pretty normal. I haven't owned a Nike in well over 20 years, at least.
