After it came out that there were many more incidents, the NFL essentially kicked him out of the league. And after the backlash they got, the NFL certainly won't take that risk again and they will place the bar lower for suspending a player the full 6 games.

NFL owners endorse new personal conduct policy - NFL.com

Quote:
A baseline suspension of six games without pay for violations involving assault, battery, domestic violence, dating violence, child abuse, other forms of family violence, or sexual assault, with consideration given to possible mitigating or aggravating circumstances.

I am not a big fan of the NFL investigation superseding the legal process and have less than zero confidence in any NFL investigation in general. With that being said, the NFL has said it is zero tolerance on domestic violence. If they have found him guilty of violating that portion of the personal conduct policy that this is the call they had to make.

Of your stated reasons, this is the only one that has any merit, and even with that, its a concession of lack of consistency and due process.

If you're going to suspend someone, at least bar them from the playoffs or all divisional games. First 4/6 games is hardly a punishment given injury attrition.

They weren't going to do much to a black RB before the video came out. Nothing about your race baiting comment had any merit.

I'm not trying to start a race war, but do I think racial stereotypes play a significant role in these decisions.

Disagree. If they lose the first 4 games because Zeke isn't there it's just as harsh as if you suspend him for all the division games.

It has to be up there. Obviously there are bigger busts and such, but I can't remember a more obviously terrible use of a draft pick combined with the fact they traded up to take a guy no one else was considering for a least 3 rounds.

Another Kapernick story this season ...

Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch sits during national anthem at preseason NFL game | Fox News
Quote:
Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch sat during the national anthem over the weekend, ahead of a Saturday preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, the AP reports.

The NFL player was photographed on top of an orange cooler with a banana in Glendale, Ariz.

More to come I guess.

Marshawn Lynch stood for the anthem in Seattle, contrary to Jack Del Rio’s claim – ProFootballTalk
Quote:
Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch has not explained publicly why he sat out the national anthem before Saturday night’s game. But he did explain himself privately to Raiders coach Jack Del Rio — who then gave a misleading account of Lynch’s past actions to reporters.

“He said, ‘This is something I have done for 11 years. It’s not a form of anything other than me being myself,’” Del Rio said Lynch told him.

PFT tracked down a video of the national anthem before the November 13, 2011 Ravens-Seahawks game in Seattle, and that video clearly shows Lynch standing for the anthem. We have not been able to find any photos or videos showing Lynch sitting out the anthem at any time in the 11 years since he entered the NFL, until Saturday night.

It’s possible that Lynch has skipped the anthem in some settings, but Del Rio’s statement made it sound like Lynch has consistently sat out the anthem throughout his career. He hasn’t.

If a preseason game is a measure of something/anything (depth? coaching? discipline?) than this Colts team is looking horrible.

Of course. I honestly don't understand how a person sitting or standing for the national anthem matters to anyone but the person doing it.

First two draft picks likely out for the entire season before the end of the first week of training camp
Best (and only decent) LB hurt after a couple of plays in the first preseason game
First preseason game in new city an embarrassing blowout with half the 24000 capacity stadium gone in the third quarter

Meet the new Chargers, same as the old Chargers

So after seeing OBJ injured in a preseason game he probably never should have been in, the Giants proceed to play Brandon Marshall for the rest of the first half in entirety and see him pick up an injury as well. Smart.

So the Browns just had eleven players kneel for the national anthem.

The Browns have been kneeling through games since '99 so I'm surprised anyone noticed.

12, apparently, based on ESPN's urgent need to update that headline.
It's the #1 story on the right hand links portion of their page.

Whomever decided that they needed to keep a running count of this stuff can die in the same fire with the idiots doing it. It's literally finished off what remaining interest I had in the NFL, just as the left-wing coaches tally has killed off the NBA for me now.

Yay, sports.

Why is everyone so down on Bortles? I mean, he's just in his 3rd year. If I show his stats from last season (35 YDs, 4400+ yards, 400 yards rushing), he looks the same as the highest paid overrated Eli Manning. He is essentially the poor-man's Eli Manning with a much worse supporting cast.

In case anyone's curious, when I was outside a little bit ago, there were about 4 people posted outside NFL HQ for Spike Lee's rally in support of Kaepernick. While it doesn't officially start until 5, at the moment they were well outnumbered by news trucks.

I guess in order to win the starting QB job in Cleveland, all one has to do is go 6 for 18 for 93 yards with one pick.

I have a bet that I made a year ago that the Browns won't see 8 wins this year. Now let's see if I am more cursed than the Browns.

Based on preseason, the Saints have managed to improve at LB, DE, and CB--three huge need areas from last season. They won't be great there. But it looks like they won't be bottom-five-of-the-league-bad there either.

OL depth is still a problem. And, as Peyton Manning showed, the noodle arm is always a risk for an old QB.

But I am more optimistic today than I was before preseason started, which I guess is all you can ask from preseason.

Trubisky has been really impressive this preseason. His awareness, ability to work through progressions, and ball placement stand out. I like that the Bears appear to be sticking with Glennon as I don't think he's ready on day 1, but he's clearly better than Glennon in some areas.

Bears aren't going anywhere this year. Smart to not throw Trubisky to wolves. And I think Glennon is an NFL starter.

I'm not sold on Glennon yet. I was all for signing him and drafting a QB, but Glennon has shown some red flags in the preseason. He throws a nice looking ball, but his placement has been terrible. He's never hitting his receivers in stride and he's flat out missing on some throws starting QBs have to make. He also locks onto receivers and by the time he hits his 2nd or 3rd read he seems to panic and just get rid of ball.

Hopefully, he improves as he works 2 years of rust off and gets more comfortable with the offense and his receivers.

This Burfict suspension is bullshit and has me seriously on the edge of fucking ending my interest in pro football. It's a game of fucking two hand touch now. 5 games for a routine play we see all season long most seasons. Shit Ray Lewis used to do to Chad Johnson and Chad joked about how he shouldn't have been in Ray's way. Unbelievable.

I've not seen the play he's being suspended for, so can't comment on that. But this is not the first time Burflict has been in trouble with the NFL, and probably won't be the last either. That likely added to the time of the suspension. Would not surprise me to see him appeal and get it reduced.

Hmm... if your worry is that another player will be seriously injured by the "infraction" then I don't see it that way. The potential for injury is indifferent to the importance of the game being played.

To my eye, the latest Burfict hit generating the penalty seems pretty ticky-tack, but overall I have sympathy for the watch on needlessly violent hits, and don't object to the notion that scrutiny increases once you are a confirmed violator.

Its fine if the scrutiny increases, by why has Mike Mitchell never been suspended for the dirty hits he constantly makes? Why is a crown of the helmet directly to the face from Ryan Shazier ok when the rules explicitly state that leading with the crown is illegal? He wasn't even fined for that hit.

I can understand suspensions for legit dirty play. Twisting ankles, etc. But if the plays/players I mentioned above aren't punished, then why the hell is Burfict any different? Can't have it both ways, yet it seems there is a clear double standard when it comes to the Bengals players and their hits vs Steelers players and theirs. I don't even care that the Steelers hits aren't punished to nearly the same extent until shit like this happens.

The Lions finally signed Stafford to his extension.

5 years at around $27 million per year. This makes Matthew Stafford the highest paid player in NFL history, until the next QB signs his deal, which could be Kirk Cousins. That's just how these things work.

Is Stafford worth this money? No, probably not. But, that being said, there wasn't much of an option here. The one opportunity to move Stafford was when Bob Quinn first took over at the end of the 2015 season. If he thought Stafford wasn't the answer, he could have tried to trade him when Stafford still had two years left on his contract.

Once Quinn kept him, it was clear he'd need to be resigned. Stafford isn't the greatest QB in the league, but he's likely a top 15 QB and it's not like the Lions have a great QB waiting in the wings and the draft is a total crap shoot. I'm fine sticking with Stafford and seeing where it goes. It won't likely be a Super Bowl and probably not even a playoff victory, but I'm very used to all of that.

Eh. Something about fining a guy about 800k or so for a hit in a preseason game doesn't sit right with me.

Agreed that Mitchell is a POS Julio and he makes it hard to root for the Steelers.
