Not sure you could have guessed any of those before group play outside of maybe Portugal. Lots of fun to see the Euro teams getting sent home!
Costa Rica's certainly a surprise, but Uruguay making it ahead of Italy/England on their home continent isn't.

Will be interesting to see if there is a bite mark on Chiellini's shoulder. It looked like he was trying to show one to the ref when it happened.

I wonder if Balotelli understands that the fact they had to substitute him at the half played a big role in this?

Yeah, not missing the Italians at all, but Suarez is easily my least favorite player in the world - going back to the whole West Ham/agent mess.

I'm with SirFozzie... it was definitely a headbutt, but I haven't seen anything showing a bite yet. Pepe got suspended 1 game for his headbutt, but that was just the automatic 1-gamer for the Red Card. Unless I see any evidence of biting, I'd be content with a 1 or 2 match ban.

Sounds like your tied between Suarez, Tevez and maybe even Mascherano there Jim

When all you have it a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. When you have that much of an overbite, every shoulder looks like a meal.

I got no problem with that, but it's FIFA. If they give him 5 games so there's no chance he can play again this World Cup I'll take it.

If they did suspend him longer, would it only be competitive matches, which would be what next, Copa America? Or does it count friendlies too?

The starting point should be 15 games all competitions, but it really should be a lot longer. Part of me still thinks FIFA is going to whitewash the whole thing.

Wow, Italy goes down - no Italy, no Spain in the knockout rounds. I can't believe Suarez bit someone again - he should get suspended, but I can't be upset that Uruguay beat Italy. Italy flops too much and plays too much defensive football for me to want to root for them over someone else.

Who the fuck bites a soccer player??? That shit was crazy when Tyson did it, and he's a guy taking punches to the head over and over.

Top quarter of the playoff tree is getting South America heavy:

Brazil . . . .\
Chile . . . . /w\
(Colombia) . .\w/w\
Uruguay . . . / . .\
(France) . . .\ . ./w\
(Nigeria) . . /w\w/ . \
(Germany) . . \w/ . . .\
(Algeria) . . / . . . . \w
Netherlands . \ . . . . /w
Mexico . . . ./w\ . . ./
Costa Rica . .\w/w\ . /
(Ivory Coast) / . .\w/
(Argentina) . \ . ./
(Ecuador) . . /w\w/
(Belgium) . . \w/
(USA) . . . . /

Surprising that it's shaping up to have only 4 European teams left standing...

Thats unexcusable, 6 months hang at minimum.
A kick in the crotch, a punch in the face might be. That is not.
If a guy gets at an antidopping for a little pot will get 2 years. Time to ban these stupid from our lives

So... a bite to the shoulder is worse than an intentional elbow or punch to the head that can cause concussions and brain damage, or a studs-up tackle to a guy's plant leg that can put him out for a year?

The guy deserves whatever punishment he gets for being an idiot if nothing else, but I guess this is another situation where I question where our priorities are and why there's more outrage towards this than other intentional attempts to injure players that have a greater chance of causing long-term or permanent damage.

Some of these are meaningless, but Suarez has a ton of bad behavior behind him.

It was the blatant over celebrating afterwards that rubbed me up the wrong way rather than the handball itself

This kills me. I have no idea of DaddyTorgo's Italian bona fides, but was at a party on Sunday with two gals who are as American as the day is long. I'll be damned if they didn't have on their Portugal windbreakers to cheer on CR7. (I'm sure there must have been another reason, but I never figured it out.

True, the handball criticism was mainly there because it was Suarez and his badboy reputation. Had it been Messi, Pirlo or any Spanish player, the world would applaud the player's willingness to sacrifice himself.

So this is the only time I really pay attention to soccer, but ESPN was saying this is the third time the guy has bitten someone. Plus other problems. Isn't it time to talk about a lifetime ban...or is FIFA really that...um...toothless? (sorry couldn't resist )

I don't have a problem with Chiellini's response after seeing teh replays - that's just a get the fuck off me response instead of a deliberate attempt to injure. I'm talking about guys who throw an elbow to the face after some light jostling for position, or come through a guy's head on a challenge with no attempt to play the ball.

The sad thing is the ball wasn't even in the play...was rather out-of-the-area for a while before the biting.

Have you seen the aftermath of a human bite? Saliva plays hell on wounds, and they last forever and can have some awful repercussions.

I'm thinking intent.

Its easy to tell when some jackhole opens and shuts his mouth on someone's shoulder. I cant believe I just posted that in the World Cup thread. Anyway, if someone gets rocked with the ball in the air, that can generally be explained away as unintentional. "I mis-read the flight of the ball and my elbow inadvertently hit Chucharito in the face." Or "I didnt meant to blow out Neymar's knee when I slid in for a tackle, but all these bumps in the turf caused my spikes to go high."

My son got bit 2 days in a row last week by a kid in his class, he is 4. Guess the kid needs to stop watching soccer.

I told my wife I was going to tell my son next time the kid bites him to turn around and punch him in the face and it would be the last time he got bit. She wasn't fond of that idea.
